To protect a porcelain collectible, prevent drops and knocks first: display it on a stable surface away from edges and busy areas, leave room around it, and handle it from underneath rather than by a handle or rim. A glass-front cabinet can cut down dust and casual contact. Clean only after checking for cracks, loose decoration, or old repairs; when any are present, ask a qualified conservator before wet-cleaning.
Handle porcelain from underneath
Porcelain is hard but brittle, so impact and drops are the main risks during ordinary handling. Move one piece at a time where practical. Use both hands and support the body from below; never lift by a handle, knob, rim, or other projecting part. The University of Illinois Preservation Self-Assessment Program specifically advises lifting ceramics beneath their center of gravity: its ceramics guidance.

- Plan the route and clear the place where you will set the piece down.
- Use both hands to support the object underneath, keeping it upright and close to your body.
- If several pieces must be moved together, use a padded tray and keep them from touching.
Clean hands are generally less of a concern than dropping or striking the object. Reduce handling when possible; the National Park Service recommends storage arrangements that minimize handling and breakage risk in its Museum Handbook, Part I, Appendix P.

Set the piece on a flat, sturdy surface in a low-traffic spot. Keep it away from the edge and leave enough space that nearby objects, doors, or hands cannot knock into it. A stationary shelf or clear-door cabinet helps reduce both dust and accidental contact. The NPS recommends low-traffic storage, ample access space, and clear glass doors for viewing without handling; the Museum of Royal Worcester’s ceramics care guidance also recommends glass cabinets and spacing pieces apart.

- ASSEMBLY: ExpoCase is easy to assemble with flexible plastic sides that come folded flat, and a black plastic base and thermoformed clear plastic cap. Each case can be folded down between uses.
- USES: This ExpoCase cover is a lightweight, simple way to display or keep the dust off of your fashion dolls, porcelain dolls, and action figures.

- Open shelf: offers easy access, but exposes the piece to more dust and incidental contact.
- Glass-front cabinet: reduces dust and lets you see the object while limiting handling; choose a stable cabinet and shelf with enough room to remove the piece safely.
Do not force a wobbly, top-heavy, cracked, or repaired object into a generic stand. It may need a fitted support or a conservator’s advice before display.
Keep heat and sudden changes away
Choose a spot away from direct sunlight, heating vents, radiators, and cooling equipment. The ceramic body of a stable piece is not necessarily harmed by ordinary visible or UV light: the NPS says most ceramics, glass, and stone are not damaged by visible or UV light. But infrared radiation can heat an object and affect nearby relative humidity, so the NPS advises against spotlights directly on objects and says fixtures should remain outside exhibit cases.

Existing repairs and surface decoration may be more vulnerable than the porcelain itself. Stable surroundings and avoiding abrupt temperature or humidity shifts are sensible household precautions; a general-purpose display does not automatically require museum climate controls.
Understand conservation humidity figures in context
Published numbers are collection-care guidance for particular circumstances, not universal household targets. The University of Illinois Preservation Self-Assessment Program lists 66°F (19°C) and 50% relative humidity (RH), plus or minus 5%, but never above 60%, as an ideal for ceramics; the reviewed page does not state a publication year. The Canadian Conservation Institute gives a 40–50% RH set point for ceramics suspected of containing salts; its reviewed page also does not state a year.

These figures do not mean every owner of a porcelain collectible needs a hygrometer or climate-control system. For an ordinary stable piece, avoiding sudden swings and heat is the practical priority. If you know an object has unusual materials, salt contamination, or a conservation history, seek collection-specific advice rather than applying a general number.
Dust first; inspect before any wet cleaning
For larger pieces, gentle dusting is often safer than washing. The Museum of Royal Worcester recommends a lint-free cotton duster for broad areas and a soft artist’s brush for intricate details. Before cleaning, inspect the object in good light for cracks, chips, lifted or flaking decoration, and old repairs.

- If the piece is intact and stable, dust gently without pressing on projecting or delicate parts.
- If decoration is lifting, the object is cracked or chipped, or repairs are uncertain, do not improvise a wash or repair; ask a qualified conservator.
- Avoid dishwashers, bleach, and strong cleaning agents, as advised by the Museum of Royal Worcester.
That museum describes carefully controlled damp swabbing only for suitable, stable surfaces and cautions against repaired or lifting areas. That is not a reason to wet-clean a valuable or fragile collectible without knowing its condition.

Store pieces with separation and a dust barrier
Choose a stable, accessible place with enough room to take out one object without shifting another. Avoid stacking. If stacking cannot be avoided, the NPS advises separating pieces with soft material and making sure they nest without pressure; do not let one piece bear weight on a delicate part of another.

Acid-free tissue is a useful optional material for wrapping, covering, or separating stored porcelain. The University of Illinois program also suggests closed shelving, boxes, or tissue to reduce dust and cleaning. The Museum of Royal Worcester mentions acid-free tissue and bubble wrap for stored pieces, but bubble wrap should not press directly against flaking or unstable decoration; use a protective interleaf and get tailored advice for damaged or unusual objects. Never put tape directly on porcelain.
