If you only want to free space, archiving or clearing temporary files may be a better fit.
Choose the right action before changing an app
“Bloatware” can mean an app you installed and no longer use, or an app that came with your phone. Android handles those cases differently. Decide whether you want to remove the app, stop a preinstalled app from running, or clear space while keeping its data.

Uninstall an app you installed
Google’s documented Google Play route is:
- Open the Google Play Store.
- Tap your profile icon.
- Choose Manage apps & devices → Manage.
- Select the app, then tap Uninstall.
Google notes that some steps work only on Android 13 and up, and menus can differ by device. Its instructions for deleting apps on Android also describe archiving and clearing app data. You can also look for an uninstall option in Android’s app settings; the precise menu labels vary.
Disable a preinstalled app, if your phone allows it
Some system apps cannot be deleted. On some phones, an eligible preinstalled app can be disabled so it no longer appears in the app list. Do not assume that every preinstalled app has a Disable button, or that the same settings path applies across Android devices.

Google’s instructions for disabling apps that came with an Android device direct users to the device manufacturer for model-specific steps. Check the support guidance for your phone’s maker and model. If there is no Disable option, use another available option—such as turning off notifications—or leave the app installed rather than trying to remove a system component by force.

Archive an app
Archiving removes an app while keeping its icon and personal data. You can download it again if it is still available on Google Play. Choose this rather than uninstalling when you want to reclaim space but keep a path back to the app.

Clear cache or storage
In Android’s app settings, choose the app and look for its storage controls; labels and locations vary. Clear cache deletes temporary data. Clear storage permanently deletes the app’s data, so you may lose locally saved information or need to set up the app again. Neither action uninstalls the app.
Review apps you rarely use
Android’s unused-app management can delete temporary files, revoke permissions, limit background activity, and stop notifications for apps you have not used. This does not uninstall an app. You can review unused apps and turn off Pause app activity if unused for an app you want excluded from that treatment. If you think an app is harmful
Suspected malware is a security issue, not ordinary decluttering. Google Play Protect checks apps and can warn about, disable, or remove harmful apps. Google recommends uninstalling apps you do not trust and checking for Android and security updates. See Google’s guidance on using Play Protect to help keep apps safe and removing unwanted software.

On the Home screen, Remove takes an item off that screen; it does not uninstall the app. Choose Uninstall when you want the app removed from the device. Google describes the distinction in its Home screen help.
