How to Protect a Tech-Heavy Portfolio During a Market Selloff

A technology-heavy portfolio is managed for resilience—not immunity—by measuring hidden concentration, setting written limits, diversifying across sectors and assets, and rebalancing with tax and behavior in mind.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The most reliable way to make a technology-heavy portfolio more resilient is to reduce its dependence on one sector before a crisis: set an allocation that fits your goals and risk tolerance, measure your real technology exposure (including overlapping funds and employer stock), and rebalance when it moves beyond a written limit. Diversification can reduce concentration risk, but it cannot prevent losses when stocks or bonds fall together.

Do not treat a selloff as a signal to make an all-or-nothing sale. Use a precommitted plan for position limits, contributions, taxes and rebalancing so that a volatile day does not decide your long-term asset mix.

What “protection” can and cannot mean

A portfolio cannot be made immune to a market decline. The practical objective is to prevent one company, one industry or one type of asset from determining your financial outcome. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) explains that combining asset categories whose returns move differently in different market conditions can reduce overall portfolio risk and smooth the ride. That is risk management, not a guarantee.

Technology companies can fall for reasons that do not affect every other business at the same time: products become obsolete, competitors take market share, regulators change rules, and a small group of very large companies can dominate an index. A diversified portfolio may still lose value in a broad crash, but its result should be less dependent on that single set of risks.

Fidelity’s 2025 guidance uses about 5% of a portfolio in one holding as a level that deserves review. That is a review threshold, not a universal sell rule. A household with restricted employer shares, a concentrated taxable account or a short time horizon may need a lower limit, while a knowledgeable investor with a high risk capacity may choose another rule.

Diversification also does not guarantee a profit or protect you from ever losing money. Any allocation discussed below is an illustration of a decision process, not a recommendation for every reader.

Measure your actual technology concentration

Start with a complete inventory. Use current market values, not the amounts you originally paid, and calculate technology as a share of all investable assets:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Technology share = (direct technology holdings + technology inside funds + related employee equity) ÷ total investable assets × 100

Decide in advance how you will classify borderline companies. An index provider may place a payments, communications or internet company in a different sector than your brokerage does. Consistency matters more than finding one perfect label.

Count direct holdings and sector funds

List individual technology shares, technology-sector mutual funds, exchange-traded funds (ETFs), employee stock, restricted stock units (RSUs), stock options and company purchase-plan shares. Include unvested awards in a separate line so you can see future exposure and the risk that your paycheck and portfolio depend on the same employer.

Look through broad-market funds

A fund with “total market” or “large-cap” in its name can still have a substantial technology weight. Read its current holdings and sector breakdown, then add the technology percentage of the fund to your look-through calculation. Investor.gov warns that a narrowly focused sector fund is not necessarily diversified simply because it is packaged as an ETF or mutual fund. Two funds that appear different may own the same mega-cap companies.

Separate one-company risk from sector risk

Record the percentage in your largest issuer, then the combined percentage in the five largest issuers. A portfolio can be under a stated technology-sector limit yet still be dominated by one company. Treat employer equity separately: a job loss and a share-price decline can occur together, creating a double hit to household finances.

Exposure to review What to calculate Why it matters
Single stock Market value divided by total portfolio value One earnings report, lawsuit or product failure can drive the result.
Technology sector Direct technology holdings plus the technology portion of every fund Overlapping funds can hide a much larger sector bet than the account labels suggest.
Employer equity Vested shares, unvested awards and exercisable options as separate lines Your income, benefits and investments may depend on the same company.
Geography Domestic and non-domestic percentages by underlying company A portfolio can be diversified by company but concentrated in one country’s market, currency or regulation.

Write guardrails before the next volatile session

A written policy turns a vague intention to “reduce tech” into repeatable decisions. It should contain four items: a target technology range, a maximum single-stock weight, a rebalancing trigger and a review schedule.

Choose a target range, not a magic percentage

Set the range from your goals, time horizon, emergency-reserve needs and ability to tolerate a temporary decline. Someone saving for a house next year generally needs a different stock exposure from someone funding retirement decades away. No authoritative source establishes one universally safe technology percentage, so do not copy an online allocation without testing whether you could hold it through a severe drawdown.

Set a maximum for one issuer

Use the Fidelity 2025 review point of roughly 5% as a prompt to investigate, not as an automatic liquidation instruction. A lower cap may be sensible for employer stock or money needed soon. Document whether the limit applies before or after a price move and how you will handle restricted shares that cannot be sold immediately.

Pick a drift trigger and a calendar review

Vanguard illustrates a 70% stock/30% bond portfolio with a 5-percentage-point drift trigger. In that example, a rebalance is considered when stocks reach 75% or fall to 65%. The figures are an example of a rule, not a prescribed allocation. You can use a percentage-point trigger, a calendar schedule, or both; the important feature is deciding before emotions peak.

Rebalancing restores the portfolio to its intended risk level. The SEC and Investor.gov describe three ways to do it: sell an overweight asset, buy an underweight asset, or direct new contributions toward underweight categories. Record the trigger, the permitted trades, the account in which they will occur and the person responsible for checking it.

Build diversification deliberately

Adding a different ticker is not automatically diversification. Compare each proposed holding by what risk it adds or removes, how quickly it can be sold, its volatility, fees and tax treatment. Inspect the underlying companies and countries rather than relying on a fund’s name.

Possible diversifier Risk it may change Checks before using it
High-quality bonds Can provide a different return pattern from shares and a source for planned withdrawals; bond prices can still fall when interest rates rise or credit quality deteriorates. Issuer quality, maturity, duration, fund fees, tax status and whether the holding is appropriate for the account’s time horizon.
Cash equivalents Reduce price volatility and preserve near-term spending capacity, but inflation can erode purchasing power and returns may be lower over long periods. Liquidity, insurance or guarantee structure where applicable, yield variability and the amount needed for emergencies.
Broad equity exposure outside technology Reduces reliance on one industry while retaining long-term stock-market risk. Sector weights, largest holdings, domestic versus international exposure and overlap with existing funds.
International equities Adds companies, currencies and economic systems that may not move in lockstep with domestic technology shares. Foreign-market and currency risk, regional concentration, withholding taxes, fees and the fund’s actual country weights.
Additional defensive allocation May lower the portfolio’s sensitivity to an equity selloff when the assets have different return drivers. Understand the source of return, liquidity, costs and whether the asset can also fall during a broad crisis.

These categories can decline together in a severe shock. The SEC’s point is about combining assets that have differed across market conditions, not assuming they always move in opposite directions. Recheck correlations, fees and concentration as funds change their holdings.

Rebalance during a selloff without trying to call the bottom

Use the following sequence when your written trigger is reached. It is designed to control risk, not to predict the next market move.

  1. Confirm the measurement. Use current prices and the same classification method you used when setting the policy. Check whether the drift came from technology rising, other assets falling, a contribution, a vesting event or a fund distribution.
  2. Check your cash and spending horizon. Keep money needed for near-term bills and emergencies outside the portion being rebalanced. Do not sell a volatile asset only to discover that the proceeds are needed before settlement.
  3. Use new money first where practical. Direct payroll contributions, deposits and dividends to underweight categories. This can reduce concentration without creating an immediate taxable sale.
  4. Trade in the most suitable account. Tax-advantaged accounts often allow exchanges without current capital-gains tax, subject to their own rules. In a taxable account, compare lots, holding periods and the tax cost before selling.
  5. Make partial sales when necessary. A staged trade can bring a holding back to its target without forcing an all-at-once decision. Keep the transaction tied to the prewritten trigger rather than to a headline or intraday price.
  6. Check for unintended overlap. After the trade, review the holdings of the replacement fund. Buying a broad fund may still leave substantial exposure to the same large technology companies.
  7. Document the result. Save the date, values, lots sold, destination of proceeds and the next review date. This prevents repeated discretionary changes during the same decline.

Vanguard describes this discipline as staying in sync with long-term goals rather than market-timing. Rebalancing can require buying an asset that has recently fallen or trimming one that has recently risen; neither action predicts what happens next.

Handle taxes and trading mechanics carefully

Taxable accounts

Before selling an appreciated technology position, estimate the capital gain, the holding period and the tax rate that may apply in your jurisdiction. Selling in several tax years, choosing specific high-cost lots or using new contributions for the first step can reduce the immediate bill, but each choice has trade-offs. Keep records of basis, reinvested distributions and corporate actions.

A sale at a loss can have wash-sale consequences if you buy a substantially identical security within the applicable window, including purchases in another account or through automatic reinvestment. Rules are technical and can change; coordinate with a tax professional before harvesting a loss or switching between similar funds.

Tax-advantaged accounts

Retirement and other tax-advantaged accounts may permit rebalancing without a current capital-gains bill, but withdrawals, contribution limits and account-specific rules still apply. Do not move money out of a protected account simply to change its allocation without understanding penalties and long-term effects.

Trading costs and liquidity

Check bid-ask spreads, commissions if any, fund transaction fees, settlement timing and minimum trade sizes. A small drift may not justify a costly trade. Conversely, allowing a position to become very large because the trade feels inconvenient can leave the portfolio outside its intended risk range.

Avoid the behavioral traps that worsen concentration

Panic selling

Selling every technology holding after a sharp decline locks in the current price and removes the possibility of participating in a recovery. It can also create a new concentration in cash if you have no plan for reinvestment. If your risk tolerance has genuinely changed, revise the policy deliberately and apply it across the portfolio rather than reacting to one day’s news.

Trying to buy back at the perfect time

Market bottoms and rebounds are known only after the fact. Missing a small number of strong recovery sessions can materially change long-term results, while repeated trades add taxes and costs. A trigger-based rebalance is more controllable than a forecast.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming a familiar brand equals safety

Large, profitable technology companies can still face valuation declines, regulation, competition and obsolescence. A company’s size does not remove single-issuer risk, and an ETF wrapper does not remove sector concentration.

Changing the plan every week

Set a minimum review interval unless your trigger is breached or your circumstances change. Frequent tinkering turns a long-term allocation into a series of short-term bets and makes it difficult to evaluate whether the policy worked.

Technology-specific risks to include in your review

  • Product obsolescence: New hardware, software or standards can shorten the useful life of an existing product.
  • Competition: High expected growth attracts rivals, which can pressure prices, margins and market share.
  • Regulation: Privacy, competition, export-control, intellectual-property and online-safety rules can alter costs or permissible business models.
  • Mega-cap concentration: Capitalization-weighted indexes can allocate a large share to a small group of very large companies, even when the fund owns hundreds of names.
  • Valuation sensitivity: Companies priced for distant growth can react sharply when interest-rate expectations or earnings forecasts change.
  • Employee-finance overlap: A technology worker may face reduced income, cancelled equity awards and a falling share price in the same event.

These risks are reasons to set limits, not predictions that a selloff will occur or that every technology company will perform alike.

Illustrative rebalancing example

Assume an investor chooses a 70% stock and 30% bond target solely as an example, with a 5-percentage-point trigger similar to Vanguard’s illustration. After a technology rally, the account is 75% stocks, and technology represents 48% of the total portfolio because several funds own the same large companies. The investor first directs new deposits and dividends to bonds and non-technology equity. If the stock weight remains above 75%, the investor sells selected taxable lots after estimating the gain and checks that the replacement funds do not recreate the same technology exposure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the market then falls and stocks reach 65%, the same rule may call for buying stocks with available contributions or cash rather than selling them in panic. The investor reviews emergency reserves and taxes first, then records the trade. Nothing in this example predicts returns or establishes that 70/30 is suitable; it demonstrates how a prewritten range can govern both rising and falling markets.

When professional help is worthwhile

Consider a fee-only or fiduciary financial planner when your portfolio includes concentrated employer equity, options, several taxable lots, a business interest, a trust, cross-border holdings or a withdrawal that must begin soon. A professional can model tax consequences, coordinate accounts and test whether your target allocation matches your spending plan. An automated rebalancing service may help with drift monitoring and scheduled trades, but verify its fees, tax-lot method, account coverage, security controls and the person or firm responsible for advice.

Ask any adviser to state conflicts, compensation, fiduciary status, rebalancing methodology and what happens in a fast market. You remain responsible for confirming that the proposed allocation fits your objectives and legal or tax circumstances.

Use this monitoring checklist

  • Update total investable-asset values and technology percentages at the interval in your policy.
  • Review the largest single issuer and the combined weight of overlapping holdings.
  • Include employer shares, RSUs and options in a separate concentration report.
  • Check whether your target range, stock limit or time horizon changed after a job, inheritance, purchase or retirement decision.
  • Direct new contributions and dividends to underweight categories before selling when practical.
  • Estimate taxes, wash-sale effects, spreads and other costs before taxable trades.
  • Record each rebalance and the next scheduled review date.
