How to Fix Missing or Muted Music in GTA 6: Provisional Troubleshooting Guide

There is no confirmed GTA VI-specific fix yet. Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled for release on November 19, 2026, so any menu path or console workaround published before launch is provisional. Once the game is available, start with its audio settings, then check the console output and chat mixer, isolate whether only licensed music is affected, and finally restart and update the game before contacting Rockstar Support.

Rockstar has announced radio stations, podcasts, vehicle listening and a headphone/earbud listening concept for GTA VI. It has also announced Grand Theft Auto VI: The Album, containing 34 original tracks. Those announcements confirm the planned audio features, not a repair procedure for a future software fault.

What is known about GTA VI music right now

GTA VI has not reached its announced November 19, 2026 release date. Consequently, there are no verified post-launch reports showing which audio bugs exist, which settings Rockstar will expose, or which console menu labels will be used. A troubleshooting guide published before release can only provide a safe diagnostic sequence based on normal PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S checks.

Rockstar’s official music announcement describes radio stations and podcasts that can be heard in vehicles, along with listening through the game’s headphone or earbud concept. The same announcement presents Grand Theft Auto VI: The Album with 34 original tracks and physical CD and vinyl preorder options. Buying or playing that album is separate from the game’s audio engine and cannot restore muted in-game music.

Identify exactly what is missing

Before changing settings, note where the failure occurs. This prevents you from treating a general output problem as a radio-only problem, or assuming a party-chat interaction is a game-wide soundtrack failure.

Test or context What it helps distinguish Useful observation to record
Vehicle radio Whether station playback works Station name, whether it starts, and whether it cuts out
Podcast Whether non-music broadcast audio works Podcast playback compared with music stations
On-foot gameplay Whether the problem is limited to vehicles Ambient and licensed music behavior outside a vehicle
Headphones or earbuds Whether the issue follows a listening device or output route Speaker output versus headset output
Non-music game audio Whether all game sound is affected Dialogue, effects and other sounds compared with music
Party chat Whether chat mixing is involved Music with the party active and after leaving the party

Also write down your platform (PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S), game edition, whether the problem appears every launch or only once, and whether it affects vehicles, on-foot play, headphones or earbuds. Those details make a later support request much more actionable.

Provisional launch-day troubleshooting sequence

The following order minimizes unnecessary changes and separates game settings from console output issues. It is a practical diagnostic sequence, not an officially published GTA VI procedure. Rockstar may rename or relocate controls after release.

1. Check GTA VI’s own audio settings

  1. Open the game’s in-game audio settings.
  2. Confirm that music or radio volume is above zero. A master-volume control can be audible while a separate music control is set to zero.
  3. Check that any radio, licensed-music or similar music toggle is enabled. The final interface may use different wording.
  4. Return to gameplay and test a station, a podcast and non-music sound rather than relying on one song.

If every sound works except licensed tracks, leave the console output unchanged for now and continue with the isolation tests below. If all game audio is silent, proceed immediately to the system-output checks.

  • Will take full advantage of the power of new generation systems and PC to deliver across-the-board enhancements including increased resolution and graphical detail, denser traffic, greater draw distances, upgraded AI, new wildlife, and advanced weather and damage effects for the ultimate open world experience.
  • The biggest, most dynamic and most diverse open world ever created and now packed with layers of new detail.
  • Grand Theft Auto V blends storytelling and gameplay in new ways as players repeatedly jump in and out of the lives of the game’s three lead characters, playing all sides of the game’s interwoven story.
  • Includes Grand Theft Auto Online, the ever-evolving Grand Theft Auto universe.
  • All new content and gameplay created and released since the launch of Grand Theft Auto Online including new Jobs, an arsenal of new weapons, scores of new vehicles, new properties and player customizations

2. Verify the console output and headset controls

  1. On the PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S, confirm that the intended audio output device is selected.
  2. Check the headset’s physical mute switch, inline controls and volume wheel if you are using one.
  3. Review the console’s chat/game-audio mixer. A balance that heavily favors chat can make game music appear muted while other party sounds remain audible.
  4. If the problem occurs only during party chat, leave the party temporarily and retest GTA VI. A change outside party chat indicates that chat mixing or a platform communication state is involved.

Do not assume a headset fault solely because music is missing. Compare the same scene through the console’s normal output and the headset when possible.

3. Test different audio sources

  1. Try another radio station.
  2. Start a podcast.
  3. Listen for dialogue, effects or other non-music game audio.
  4. Compare vehicle playback with on-foot gameplay.
  5. Compare speakers with headphones or earbuds.

This produces a useful scope description: “all audio is silent,” “only licensed music is silent,” “vehicle radio fails but podcasts work,” or “music fails only in party chat.” Each description points to a different class of setting and avoids unnecessary reinstalls.

4. Fully quit, relaunch and update

  1. Fully quit GTA VI instead of merely suspending it.
  2. Launch the game again and repeat the same station or podcast test.
  3. Install any available game update for your platform.
  4. Retest after the update and note whether the symptom is gone, intermittent or unchanged.
  5. Record the platform, edition, audio route, game context and persistence before contacting Rockstar Support.

A single session failure and a problem that returns on every launch are materially different reports. Include both the first occurrence and the result after a full quit, relaunch and update.

Use the symptom to choose the next branch

Music disappears only during party chat

Leave the party and test again before changing other game settings. If music returns, document the console, headset or output route, party-chat state and whether podcasts or other effects were also affected. This pattern is especially important on Xbox because Rockstar has documented a similar issue in GTA V and GTA Online.

Only licensed music is missing

Recheck the in-game music or licensed-music control, then compare several stations and a podcast. If podcasts and non-music effects work while every licensed station is silent, report that narrow scope rather than describing the game as completely muted.

Radio fails in vehicles but other audio works

Test another vehicle, another station and on-foot audio. If the failure follows vehicles rather than a specific station, include that context in the support report. Do not infer that the soundtrack files are absent until you have tested a podcast and non-music audio.

Headphones or earbuds are silent, but speakers work

Check the selected console output device, the headset mute switch and the chat/game mixer. If speakers and headphones produce different results, record the exact route and whether the device is wired or wireless; the distinction helps support separate a game setting from an output-device state.

All game audio is silent

Start with the console output device, headset controls and chat/game mixer rather than changing stations. Then fully quit and relaunch the game, install any available update and test again. If system sounds or other games are also silent, describe that broader console symptom to support.

The problem returns every time GTA VI launches

Repeat the same controlled test after a full quit and after an update. Record whether the music setting resets, whether the failure occurs in the same context, and whether changing output devices changes the result. A repeatable pattern is more useful than a report that says only “music stopped.”

Platform-specific checks without guessing at menu names

PlayStation 5

Confirm that the console is sending sound to the intended device and that any connected headset is not muted. Check the game/chat balance, then test with party chat inactive. Because Rockstar has not published GTA VI-specific support instructions, avoid treating a particular pre-release menu path as authoritative; use the current labels shown on your console and in the game.

Xbox Series X|S

Confirm the selected output device, inspect the headset mute control and review the chat/game-audio mixer. If music vanishes only while you are in Party Chat, leave the party and repeat the same in-game test. Include the result in your support report, whether the issue affects only licensed music or all game audio.

What the existing GTA V report does—and does not—prove

Rockstar Support says it is aware of an issue in which Xbox Series X|S players cannot hear licensed in-game music while in Party Chat in GTA V or GTA Online and that it is investigating a solution. That article was last updated April 22, 2024.

The report is useful as a diagnostic clue for a party-chat comparison, but it is not evidence that GTA VI has the same defect. GTA VI has a different release, software build and support record. Do not present the GTA V article as a confirmed GTA VI workaround, and do not assume that leaving Party Chat will permanently fix a future GTA VI bug.

How to prepare a useful Rockstar Support report

After the basic sequence, gather a concise reproduction report rather than repeatedly changing unrelated settings. Include:

  • Platform: PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S.
  • Game edition and installed update version, if shown.
  • Audio route: television or speakers, wired headset, wireless headset, headphones or earbuds.
  • Scope: all audio, licensed music only, radio only, podcasts, vehicle-only, on-foot-only or headphone-only.
  • Party-chat state: inactive, active, and the result after leaving the party.
  • Persistence: one session, intermittent or every launch.
  • Steps already tried: in-game volume and toggle checks, output-device check, mixer check, full quit, relaunch and update.

If possible, describe one repeatable test, such as selecting a particular station in a vehicle, switching to a podcast, leaving Party Chat and relaunching. Avoid claiming a cause you have not established; report the observed sequence and result.

The album is not a repair

Grand Theft Auto VI: The Album is an announced 34-track release with physical CD and vinyl preorder options. Those products may let you listen outside the game, but they do not alter GTA VI’s installed audio files, console mixer or radio settings. Treat them as soundtrack releases, not troubleshooting tools.

When to stop troubleshooting

Stop after the in-game checks, output and mixer checks, source isolation, full relaunch and update test have been completed. Further changes can erase useful evidence, especially if the problem is tied to party chat or one output device. At that point, send Rockstar Support the platform, edition, context, persistence and exact tests that failed or succeeded. Until Rockstar publishes a GTA VI-specific support article, no more authoritative repair path can be claimed.
