Protect a CloudFront-delivered live stream at two boundaries: require signed access on the viewer-facing CloudFront behavior, and prevent viewers from bypassing CloudFront to reach the origin directly. For HLS, signed cookies are usually the better fit because a single entitlement can cover a manifest and its many segment files. Use signed URLs for individual objects or clients that cannot use cookies. Your application—not CloudFront—decides whether a viewer is entitled and issues the credentials; CloudFront validates them on requests.
What CloudFront protects—and what it does not
CloudFront signed URLs and signed cookies control who can retrieve content through a distribution. They do not, by themselves, make the origin private, encrypt the video, or guarantee that an authorized viewer cannot share credentials or record playback. AWS describes signed URLs and cookies as providing the same basic function: controlling access to content. AWS: Decide to use signed URLs or signed cookies

For a protected stream, configure both controls: CloudFront must reject unauthorized viewer requests, and the origin must reject direct requests that bypass CloudFront. If your delivery requirement includes content encryption and license-based playback controls, treat DRM as a separate design decision.
Choose the live-video origin and delivery path
CloudFront is the delivery layer, not the live encoder or packager. AWS describes a live pipeline in which MediaLive encodes a stream, MediaPackage can package it for multiple device formats and optionally add DRM, and MediaStore can serve content when it is already encoded in suitable formats. CloudFront then distributes the resulting video. Choose the media path based on format and DRM needs, rather than expecting signed access to perform those functions. Signed cookies or signed URLs for a stream?
| Choice | Best fit | Practical consequence |
|---|---|---|
| Signed cookies | A set of related restricted files, such as an HLS manifest and its segments | One entitlement can authorize multiple files without changing their URLs. The playback client must be able to send cookies. |
| Signed URLs | An individual object, or a client that does not support cookies | Authorization travels in the URL. Include any required query parameters before signing; adding parameters afterward causes an HTTP 403. |
If both mechanisms apply to the same content and a request includes a signed URL, CloudFront bases its access decision on that signed URL. Keep that interaction in mind when a player or application may send both forms of credentials. AWS: Decide to use signed URLs or signed cookies AWS: Use signed URLs
Implementation: protect the CloudFront path
- Select the stream paths and origin. Identify which manifests, segments, and related files require entitlement. Choose the AWS live-video services needed to encode and package the stream, and configure the origin to serve the resulting formats.
- Restrict direct origin access. For an Amazon S3 origin, configure Origin Access Control (OAC) and a bucket policy that permits retrieval through the distribution rather than public direct access. For a custom origin, use network restrictions or a secret custom header appropriate to the origin. A protected CloudFront behavior is not sufficient if the origin remains publicly reachable. AWS: Restrict access to files AWS: Data protection in Amazon CloudFront
- Require signed access on the protected behavior. Configure the CloudFront cache behavior for the stream paths to require signed URLs or signed cookies, and associate a trusted key group/public key. Keep public application pages or player bootstrap resources on a separate behavior if they should load without stream credentials. AWS recommends trusted key groups; supported signing key types are RSA 2048 and ECDSA 256. AWS: Serve private content with signed URLs and signed cookies AWS: Restrict access to files
- Authorize viewers in your application. After sign-in, purchase, subscription, or another entitlement check, have your application issue the chosen signed credential. CloudFront validates the signature and policy; it does not know whether a user paid or otherwise qualifies unless your application makes that decision before issuing access.
- Set the policy resource and time window. Use a policy scoped to the intended object or stream paths. A custom policy can specify a resource pattern, optional activation time, expiration time, and optional viewer IP range. Avoid a broader resource pattern or longer validity than the playback entitlement requires. AWS does not prescribe one universal lifetime for live-stream tokens. AWS: Restrict access to files
- Plan credential renewal around playback. HLS playback makes repeated requests for manifests and segments; a credential that expires mid-session may block subsequent requests. Design renewal so entitled viewers can continue playback when appropriate, while expired or revoked access stops at the intended boundary. Test the behavior with your actual player and policy.
- Configure browser cookies and CORS when using signed cookies. Set the three signed-cookie name-value pairs before the browser requests protected content, with secure cookie attributes and a narrowly scoped domain. CloudFront does not require a signature for OPTIONS preflight requests. Ensure the origin’s preflight response does not disclose protected content. AWS: Use signed cookies
Test authorization and bypass paths
Before relying on the setup, test the enforcement boundary with the real manifest, segment paths, player, and origin configuration. These are validation cases to run, not claims about a test already performed.

- Confirm an entitled viewer can retrieve the manifest and all required segments.
- Confirm missing, malformed, invalid, and expired credentials are rejected.
- Try the origin URL directly and confirm it cannot return protected files to an unauthorized requester.
- Check that the selected policy covers every required HLS file but does not unintentionally cover unrelated content.
- For signed cookies, test browser cookie delivery and CORS preflight; verify an OPTIONS response does not expose stream data.
- For signed URLs, verify the final URL contains all necessary query parameters before signing and is not modified afterward.
Common access failures and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| CloudFront returns HTTP 403 for a signed URL | The signature or policy is invalid or expired, the URL was altered, or query parameters were appended after signing. | Check the URL, policy resource and time limits, signing key association, and whether the application changed the URL after signing. Sign the complete URL. |
| The manifest loads but segments fail | The policy resource scope, cookie delivery, or credential lifetime does not cover later segment requests. | Inspect segment paths against the policy, confirm the browser sends all required signed cookies, and account for renewal before expiry. |
| Direct origin requests still work | The origin allows public access independently of the CloudFront behavior. | Apply OAC and an appropriate bucket policy for S3, or restrict the custom origin to CloudFront using network controls or a secret custom header. |
| Browser playback fails around preflight | The browser’s OPTIONS request or origin CORS response is not handled correctly. | Remember CloudFront does not check signed access on OPTIONS; ensure preflight responses do not serve protected media and configure the origin’s CORS response for the player. |
| Some viewers lose access unexpectedly | A short expiration or IP restriction may no longer match the playback request. A viewer’s IP can change during a session. | Review token renewal and whether IP binding is necessary for the threat model; use IP restrictions only when the operational trade-off is acceptable. |
CloudFront access control versus DRM
Signed access answers whether CloudFront should deliver a file to a requester. DRM addresses a different layer: AWS describes MediaPackage as able to add DRM during packaging. Signed cookies and URLs do not encrypt the media or replace a DRM system, player integration, or licensing design. The appropriate DRM setup depends on your content and platform requirements; the cited AWS guidance does not specify a universal vendor or player integration.
