Protect a garden from drought by matching plants to local conditions, keeping soil covered, checking moisture before watering, and directing water to roots when plants need it. El Niño can change seasonal climate odds, but it does not predict drought for every location. Start with your local precipitation outlook and water-provider rules, then adjust care to your plants and soil.
Will El Niño cause drought where you live?
Not necessarily. El Niño is a climate pattern, not a location-specific drought forecast. NOAA’s September 10, 2026 diagnostic described a strengthening event and gave a greater than 90% chance of a very strong El Niño during Northern Hemisphere fall and winter 2026–27. It also said stronger events do not ensure strong impacts: they can only make certain impacts more likely. That probability is about El Niño’s strength, not the chance your garden will experience drought. Read NOAA’s diagnostic and strength outlook, then check seasonal precipitation outlooks and current drought conditions for your area.

Before changing your watering routine, check restrictions and schedules from your local water provider. Rules and rainfall differ by community, so no single watering calendar is right for every garden.
Prepare the garden before dry weather
Choose plants for your region and site
Favor plants suited to your local climate, soil, sun exposure, and available water. A drought-tolerant plant list for one region may not suit another. Your local Cooperative Extension office or native-plant specialists can help identify appropriate choices; Illinois Extension’s dry-area plant guidance is an example of region-specific advice.

Drought-tolerant does not mean no water, especially just after planting. New plants need attention while their roots establish. Illinois Extension notes that new native perennial beds need continued watering in their first years. Reduce water-demanding lawn area where appropriate and consider regionally suitable perennial beds or groundcover; xeriscaping combines suitable plant choices with soil cover and need not look like a desert landscape. Cover soil and control weeds
Mulch or living groundcover helps keep exposed soil covered, while removing weeds reduces competition for available water. There is no universal mulch depth or material for every plant and site. Follow local plant-specific guidance, and keep mulch from piling against stems or tree trunks. Colorado State Extension’s drought-watering guidance discusses landscape watering and mulch.

Set up targeted irrigation
Drip irrigation and soaker hoses can direct water toward plant root zones rather than broadly wetting paths or bare ground. Their usefulness depends on plant spacing and layout; check that water reaches the roots you intend to irrigate, and follow local watering rules. Iowa State Extension, Oklahoma State Extension, and Colorado State Extension recommend targeted watering approaches.

- Check local rules first. Look up your water provider’s current schedule and restrictions. Follow them even if plants appear stressed.
- Check soil moisture before watering. Do not water automatically on a fixed schedule. Give priority to plants that need it, rather than irrigating every plant equally.
- Water slowly at the root zone. Apply water deeply enough to reach roots, and less often where the plants and soil allow. Oklahoma State Extension recommends watering early in the day.
- Recheck the soil and plants. Confirm that water has reached the intended root zone; adjust delivery or timing if it has not.
Iowa State Extension advises spot-watering new additions rather than irrigating an entire bed. Established perennials generally need supplemental water only during extended dry periods, while new plantings warrant closer monitoring.

Prioritize plants that are most vulnerable
New trees and shrubs
Check both the root ball and nearby soil of recently planted trees and shrubs. If they are dry, water slowly and deeply so moisture reaches the root zone. Iowa State Extension provides guidance on monitoring and watering new trees.
Vegetables during growth and production
Vegetables need particular attention after transplanting, during plant development, and while flowering and producing fruit. Avoid both underwatering and overwatering. Colorado State Extension’s guidance covers vegetable water needs during these stages.

Container plants
Containers hold less soil than garden beds and can dry more quickly. Water thoroughly, use a moisture-retaining potting mix, and move pots into shade or shelter when appropriate during hot weather. In hot, windy conditions, containers may need daily attention; check their moisture rather than assuming that one schedule will work every day. Iowa State Extension includes container guidance for drought and restrictions.

Adjust the plan to your location
Use your local precipitation outlook, water-provider rules, and Cooperative Extension recommendations together. The NOAA outlook describes broad seasonal probabilities; it cannot tell you how much water a particular bed needs. Soil, exposure, plant age, and local restrictions determine the practical response. For region-specific drought gardening advice, see University of Minnesota Extension’s extreme-drought guidance, while recognizing that its recommendations are written for Minnesota.
