Leave the manufacturer-installed inner-screen film in place unless your phone maker or an authorized service provider tells you otherwise. Keep grit and sharp objects away from the open display, check for debris before folding, and avoid pressing hard on the flexible screen. Care and replacement instructions vary by model, so follow the guidance for your exact phone.
Daily habits that reduce avoidable damage
- Keep sharp objects away. Don’t press the screen with a pen, fingernail, or other hard or sharp object. Samsung’s “Care for your Samsung foldable phone” page also warns against excessive pressure. Google describes Pixel Fold screens as softer than traditional phone screens and advises avoiding crumbs, fingernails, and sharp objects in its Pixel Fold safety and regulatory guide.
- Keep dust and crumbs away. Avoid exposing the open display to dusty environments or fine particles, which Google cautions can affect the screen and hinge. Xiaomi also warns against pressing sharp objects against the inner screen in its foldable phone care guidance.
- Inspect before closing. Check the display and hinge area for debris or anything trapped between the halves before folding. Motorola specifically names cards, coins, and keys as possible obstructions in its Razr hardware guide.
- Clean gently. Samsung recommends a soft, dry cloth. Wipe without pressing hard; don’t assume liquid cleaners or abrasive materials are suitable unless your phone’s own instructions say so. A clean, soft microfiber cloth is one optional choice, but it is not a screen-protection accessory or a specific manufacturer-endorsed product.
- Keep the factory film attached. On the cited Galaxy foldables, Samsung describes the film as a consumable protective layer and says to leave it in place. Google likewise says not to remove the Pixel Fold’s pre-installed protector. Check your model’s support page, because instructions are device-specific.
What to do if the installed film is scratched or lifting
Don’t peel it off or apply a generic replacement film as a first step. Samsung warns that arbitrary removal or uncertified film can damage the panel or affect performance. Google tells Pixel Fold users not to remove the pre-installed protector, while Motorola recommends approved personnel for Razr protector replacement.

- Look up the support instructions for your exact model and region.
- If the film is bubbling, lifting, or damaged, ask the manufacturer or an authorized service provider whether it can be replaced and how to arrange service.

Should you add another inner-screen protector?
There is no universal recommendation to install an aftermarket film or to remove the factory layer and leave the screen bare. The right choice depends on the exact model, the condition of its installed film, and whether the manufacturer or an authorized provider offers a suitable replacement. The Samsung, Google, Motorola, and Xiaomi guidance cited above cautions against unsanctioned removal or film application for the models it covers. Confirm the instructions and any service implications with your phone maker before changing the screen’s protective layer.
