Choose a gaming mouse by how it fits your hand and the games you play—not by chasing the biggest DPI number or the lightest possible weight. Start with hand size and grip, then compare weight, connection, sensor settings, polling rate, buttons, and extras you will actually use. Manufacturers offer useful specifications and fit guidance, but none of the cited sources establishes one ideal mouse for everyone.
How much should a gaming mouse weigh?
There is no universal target in the available manufacturer guidance. Weight is a handling preference: a lighter mouse may feel easier to move quickly, while a heavier one may feel more substantial or controlled to some players. Hand size, desk space, sensitivity settings, and the games you play all affect what feels comfortable.

Check whether a listed weight includes the cable, receiver, or removable weights. For a concrete example, Logitech lists the G502 HERO at 121 g mouse-only and says its weights can be repositioned. Those are the manufacturer’s specifications for that model, not an independent test or a recommended target for all players. Logitech G502 HERO specifications
What gaming mouse shape is right for your grip?
Shape is a fit question rather than a performance ranking. Logitech G advises considering hand size and grip style; Razer likewise notes that no single mouse is designed for every preference. Try to assess how your fingers and palm rest on the mouse, and whether its width, height, and button placement feel comfortable during the movements you make in-game.

Palm grip
With a palm grip, much of the hand rests on the mouse. Compare the mouse’s overall size and contour with your hand; a shape that supports your palm comfortably for long sessions may matter more than a headline specification.
Claw grip
With a claw grip, the palm rests farther back and the fingers arch over the buttons. Pay attention to where the hump meets your palm and whether the buttons are easy to reach without straining.

Fingertip grip
With a fingertip grip, the hand makes less contact with the mouse body. Consider whether its size and shape let you move and reposition it comfortably. Grip labels are useful starting points, not guarantees that a particular design will suit you.

Check whether a mouse is right-handed, left-handed, or ambidextrous, and inspect button placement as well as the shell. SteelSeries’ product material illustrates that ergonomic, ambidextrous, and right-handed forms are distinct options, not interchangeable labels. SteelSeries gaming mice

Does DPI matter?
DPI describes how far the pointer moves on screen in response to physical mouse movement at a given setting. A higher maximum DPI is not, by itself, proof of better accuracy or a better mouse. Logitech’s buying guide treats DPI as one comparison point among sensor type, polling rate, buttons, and weight. Logitech G gaming mouse guide
Compare the adjustable sensitivity range and the convenience of changing settings, then judge a mouse by whether you can use a comfortable setting in your games. Maximum figures are specifications, not a promise that you will benefit from using the maximum.

What polling rate do you need?
Polling or report rate describes how often a mouse reports its position to the computer, measured in hertz. A higher figure is one specification to compare, but the cited manufacturer material does not establish that every player needs the maximum rate.
Logitech lists a 1000 Hz USB report rate for the G502 HERO. This is the manufacturer’s published specification for that model page, not an independent measurement or a universal recommendation. Logitech G502 HERO specifications

Which gaming mouse features are worth paying for?
Pay for features that solve a real need in your games or setup. Manufacturer listings can help you compare what a model offers, but the presence of a feature alone does not make it valuable to every player.
- Programmable buttons: Useful when you want quick access to game actions or shortcuts. Check the button count and whether the controls can be assigned as you want.
- Adjustable weights: Relevant if you want to tune handling. Logitech lists repositionable weights on the G502 HERO; other designs may prioritize a different feel. Logitech G502 HERO specifications
- Wired or wireless connection: Choose according to your desk setup and preference. Confirm the exact connection method and any included receiver or cable on the model’s specification page.
- Lighting: A visual preference rather than a requirement for tracking or control. Consider it only if the appearance matters to you.
- Onboard settings: Can be convenient if you want settings stored or accessible on the mouse. Verify the exact capability for the model rather than assuming all mice support it.
- Ergonomic or ambidextrous design: Consider this in light of your hand, handedness, and grip; the label does not guarantee personal comfort.
How to compare candidate mice
Use manufacturer pages to confirm published specifications, and keep specification claims separate from independent performance testing. The sources cited here establish product details and general selection factors, not comparative test results.
- Check fit: Compare hand size, grip, shape, and handedness options.
- Compare handling: Note the listed weight and whether it is mouse-only, plus whether weights can be adjusted.
- Review tracking controls: Check sensor type and adjustable sensitivity range without treating the largest maximum as an automatic advantage.
- Check connection and reporting: Confirm wired or wireless connection and the manufacturer-stated polling or report rate.
- Evaluate controls and extras: Count programmable buttons and identify lighting, onboard settings, or other features you would use.
- Verify the exact model variant: Product variants and regional specification pages can differ, so confirm details for the version you plan to buy.
For example, Logitech’s G502 HERO page lists a HERO 25K sensor, 121 g mouse-only weight, 1000 Hz USB report rate, and repositionable weights. Logitech also contrasts the customizable-weight G502 HERO with its G502 X line, which it presents as a lighter-handling alternative. These are manufacturer descriptions, not independent test results or a claim that either design fits every player. G502 HERO specifications · Logitech G502 X line
