Foldables need more careful handling than phones with rigid screens, and neither a case nor an ingress rating makes a phone drop-proof, dustproof, or waterproof.
How to reduce damage from drops and everyday bumps
Choose a case that explicitly fits your phone’s precise model. A case intended for a different foldable—or even a different model from the same brand—may not fit correctly. Samsung’s support guidance, “Care for your Samsung foldable phone,” points users to cases compatible with their particular foldable model.

A case can cover exterior surfaces, but the manufacturer guidance available here does not establish that any particular case design prevents inner-screen or hinge damage better than another. No comparative case drop tests are provided. Before buying, check whether the case fits securely on both halves, allows the phone to fold normally, and leaves buttons and ports usable. Treat claims such as “rugged” as marketing unless they are backed by relevant model-specific test results.

How to keep dust and grit away from the hinge
Before folding, look over the inner display and hinge area and remove visible particles gently. Sand, dirt, crumbs, and other debris trapped inside can press against the flexible display when the phone closes. Google’s Pixel Fold safety guide specifically tells owners to check that particles such as sand or dirt are absent before closing the device. Motorola gives similar Razr guidance and warns that dust exposure can reduce hinge life or damage the display.
Do not use a pressurized-air duster as a catch-all cleaning method. Motorola’s Razr care instructions say not to use one. Instead, follow the cleaning directions for your exact model and clear debris gently.

How to protect the flexible inner screen
Handle the inner display more gently than a traditional rigid phone screen. Google warns that flexible screens are softer and advises keeping crumbs, fingernails, and sharp objects away. Avoid pressing or tapping the screen with a sharp object or stylus, and keep grit from being caught between the two halves when folding.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsKeep the factory-fitted protector in place
Do not peel off the inner-screen protector or add another one unless the manufacturer’s instructions for your exact model say to do so. The guidance differs by product family:

How to clean a foldable phone safely
For routine dust or smudges, the manufacturer guidance supports wiping gently with a soft, dry, lint-free or microfiber cloth. Avoid abrasive cloths and do not spray cleaner directly onto the screen. What dust- and water-resistance ratings do—and do not—mean
Ingress ratings describe a particular device under specified laboratory conditions. They are not a promise of immunity in daily use, do not establish drop protection, and should not be transferred from one generation or brand to another. Google says resistance can diminish with wear or damage; Motorola cautions that dust can still harm the hinge or display.

| Device covered by the guidance | Manufacturer-stated rating or limitation | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Original Google Pixel Fold | IPX8 under IEC 60529 when the device leaves the factory; Google says it is not dust resistant. | Google’s Pixel Fold safety guide says water resistance is not permanent and may be lost through wear, repair, disassembly, or damage; a drop may also affect it. |
| Google Pixel 11 Pro Fold | IP68 when the device leaves the factory. | Google’s safety guide says the device is not dustproof or waterproof and that resistance may diminish over time or after damage. This rating applies to this model, not earlier Pixel Fold generations. |
| Motorola Razr Fold | Motorola lists IP46, IP48, and IP49 tests under controlled laboratory conditions, with protection for solid foreign objects larger than 1 mm. | Motorola says the device is not dustproof and advises avoiding dust because it can reduce hinge life or damage the display. The stated ratings are not independent drop-protection results. |
The ratings above come from the manufacturers’ own device guides. They do not show that one case is more protective than another, and they are not a substitute for the care instructions for your exact phone.

What to check when choosing a case
Because the available guidance confirms compatibility but does not compare case performance, use these as checks rather than assuming a particular design is proven superior:
- Does the listing name your exact model and fit both halves securely?
- Can the phone fold through its normal range without the case interfering with the hinge, buttons, or ports?
- Does the amount of exterior coverage and added bulk suit how you carry the phone?
- Are any protection claims supported by test evidence for your specific model, rather than by a general label?
Manufacturer guidance and available cases can vary by model and region. Consult your phone’s official guide for its specific care, cleaning, protector, and service instructions.
