For now, protect your wallet by following official updates from the blockchain and wallet you use—not by buying a device advertised as “quantum-safe.” A hardware wallet can help protect custody of your keys, and a secure backup can help you recover them, but neither changes the signature rules a blockchain accepts. A post-quantum migration must be supported by the network and implemented by your wallet.
What can you do to protect a wallet now?
There is no universal, user-controlled setting that makes an existing blockchain account post-quantum. Keep using ordinary security practices for your chain and wallet, and monitor their official protocol and wallet documentation for a supported migration. Do not move funds based only on a product claim or an unofficial message saying a quantum deadline is imminent.

- Follow the chain’s official guidance. Look for an activated protocol change, not only a proposal or roadmap item.
- Follow your wallet provider’s documented instructions. A migration should explain which accounts it applies to and how to complete it safely.
- Do not share your seed phrase or private keys. A purported quantum migration does not justify giving them to a website, support agent, or unsolicited service.
- Check the chain and wallet separately. A protocol may support a new signature scheme before a particular wallet supports the user migration—or vice versa.
These steps cannot make a blockchain’s existing signature scheme quantum-resistant. They help you avoid mistaking custody protections, marketing claims, or proposals for an available network migration.
Why a new standard or hardware wallet is not enough
NIST has finalized post-quantum cryptography standards, including FIPS 203 for ML-KEM key establishment and FIPS 204 and 205 for the digital-signature algorithms ML-DSA and SLH-DSA. The distinction matters: ML-KEM is for establishing shared keys; transaction authorization relies on digital signatures and the blockchain’s rules for verifying them. Standardizing algorithms does not automatically add them to a blockchain or move existing accounts to them. See NIST’s approval notice and its PQC migration guidance.

A hardware wallet protects how private keys are stored and used; a seed backup helps restore access. Those can be useful for ordinary wallet security, but they do not alter which signatures the network accepts. The reviewed official guidance describes post-quantum protection as a protocol and migration issue, not a feature that can be added to an existing account simply by changing its storage device or backup.
What Ethereum users should know
Ethereum’s public guidance says users do not need to take action now. It expects wallet software to guide users through a migration after post-quantum signatures are supported by the network. Treat this as Ethereum-specific guidance, not a promise that every chain or wallet has the same plan. Read Ethereum’s quantum-resistance guidance for updates.

The proposed route is not the same as a live migration
Ethereum’s guidance describes account abstraction and EIP-8141 as a proposed route toward account signature agility. It lists EIP-8141 as under consideration for Hegotá, with a planned window in the second half of 2026. That roadmap language does not establish that the change has shipped or that users can migrate today. Check the current network and wallet documentation before acting.

Ethereum’s guidance says an account that has sent a transaction has exposed its public key onchain. A never-spent account has an additional layer of protection because only its address hash is visible. This distinction is not a guarantee of permanent safety, and it is not a reason to delay a migration if Ethereum later provides a supported one. The same exposure assumptions should not be applied automatically to other chains.

Dormant wallets remain a governance question
The Ethereum page identifies how to handle dormant wallets as an open governance question. Do not assume that a future migration will treat inactive accounts in a particular way until the network’s rules and wallet instructions specify it.
What Bitcoin users should know
Bitcoin’s BIP-361 is a post-quantum migration proposal, not an activated procedure users can follow today. The BIP-361 page and the Bitcoin BIP index identify its status as informational and draft. A draft can inform discussion, but it does not by itself change Bitcoin’s consensus rules or provide a wallet migration path. Follow official Bitcoin and wallet documentation for any later status change.

How urgent is the quantum risk?
Ethereum’s page reports an estimate from Google Quantum AI’s March 2026 research of roughly 1,200 logical qubits to break 256-bit elliptic-curve cryptography. This is an estimate reported by Ethereum.org, not a forecast for when a machine with the required capabilities will exist. It does not establish a date when any particular wallet or blockchain will become unsafe. Avoid treating speculative “Q-Day” dates as migration instructions.

For wallet holders, the practical implication is to distinguish standards work from deployment: NIST can standardize algorithms, but each blockchain must decide whether and how to support them, and wallets must implement the resulting user path.

How to assess a future migration notice
When a chain or wallet announces a post-quantum migration, verify the details in official documentation before moving funds or approving a transaction. A genuine supported route should make clear:
- whether post-quantum signature verification is activated by the chain or remains a proposal;
- which wallet versions support the network’s migration procedure;
- which account types are covered, including exposed, dormant, and contract-based accounts where relevant; and
- what the user must do, what fees or transaction approvals are involved, and how to confirm completion using trusted wallet or network interfaces.
If those details are missing, the announcement is not enough to establish that your account can be migrated safely. Do not use a universal set of steps for all chains: migration rules depend on the network and its wallet support.
