Use a rain cover that fits the EOS M50 and the lens attached to it, and keep the camera sheltered whenever you are not actively shooting. The EOS M50’s listed operating limits do not mean it is rain-safe: Canon’s support page gives no rainfall tolerance or water-resistance rating. Treat the camera as vulnerable to liquid water.
Is the Canon EOS M50 waterproof or weather-sealed?
Do not assume the EOS M50 can tolerate rain. Canon’s EOS M50 support page lists operating conditions of 0–40°C and humidity of 85% or less. Those figures describe the stated operating environment; they are not an IP rating, a waterproof guarantee, or permission to expose the camera to rain. Canon does not state a safe rain intensity or exposure duration on that page.

Canon explicitly says the EOS M50 Mark II is not waterproof in its Mark II handling precautions. That warning applies to the Mark II, not the original EOS M50, so it should not be presented as a quotation from the original model’s manual. In practical terms, though, there is no basis here for treating the original M50 as weatherproof.
Choose a rain cover that fits the camera and lens
A camera rain cover is the relevant protection while shooting. Choose one whose dimensions accommodate the EOS M50 body and the particular lens mounted on it. Check that it covers the body and lens barrel, stays in place, and still lets you operate the shutter and essential controls.
#1 Best Overall
- WATERPROOF NYLON BUILT FOR ACTIVE SHOOTING: While most camera rain covers are thin disposable PE plastic sleeves, the Altura Photo rain cover is constructed from durable waterproof nylon that holds its shape around your camera and lens during active use. It delivers maximum protection from rain, snow, salt spray, dust, and sand without collapsing, crinkling, or interfering with your shot. Built for photographers who shoot in real weather, not just emergency backup coverage.
- HAND SLEEVES AND FULL-LENGTH DOUBLE ZIPPER FOR COMPLETE CAMERA ACCESS: Two adjustable hand sleeves let you reach your camera controls, zoom ring, and shutter from both sides without removing the cover. The full-length double zipper runs the entire length of the cover, providing complete access whether you are hand-holding or tripod-mounting your camera. An ultra-clear back window panel keeps your LCD screen and viewfinder fully visible throughout your shoot.
- EXTERIOR HOOK-AND-LOOP STRAP AND INTERIOR ANTI-SLIP RUBBER FOR A WOBBLE-FREE FIT: A newly integrated exterior hook-and-loop strap combined with interior anti-slip rubber grips your lens or lens hood securely, preventing rotation, slipping, or wind-catch during movement. Easy to install and remove in seconds; compatible with most camera and lens configurations supporting lenses up to 8 inches. For best fit and weather performance, use with a dedicated lens hood.
- FITS MOST DSLR AND MIRRORLESS CAMERAS WITH LENSES UP TO 8 INCHES: Compatible with Canon EOS Rebel T6s with EF-S 18-135mm STM, Canon 80D with EF 50mm F/1.8 STM, Canon 7D Mark II with EF 70-300mm, Canon 5D Mark III with EF 24-105mm L, Canon 5D with 70-200mm F/2.8, Nikon D800 with 24-70mm F/2.8, Nikon D4, D750, D500 with AF-S 24-120mm F/4, Nikon D7200, D5500, D3300, D5100, and similar sized cameras and lenses from Sony, Pentax, Sigma, and Tamron. Verify your lens length before ordering; not recommended for smaller cameras with pancake lenses.
- FOLDS FLAT IN YOUR BAG AND SETS UP IN SECONDS: The Altura Photo rain cover packs down completely flat so it takes up virtually no space in your camera bag, making it an effortless addition to any kit for travel, sports, wildlife, and event photographers. Setup is fast enough to respond to sudden weather changes without missing a shot. Compatible with tripod mounting so you can keep shooting hands-free in any conditions, and works with a lens hood attached for added fit and weather protection performance.
Canon’s UK listing for the ERC-E5M medium camera rain cover describes protection from rain, humidity, and accidental splashes for EOS cameras. The listing does not confirm compatibility with the EOS M50 or any specific M50-and-lens combination. Do not assume that this named cover fits; verify the current dimensions and compatibility details before buying.
Before going out, fit the cover and practise taking a photograph and using the controls in dry conditions. For any cover, assess the fit and access rather than relying on a broad “camera rain cover” label. No measured head-to-head performance comparison is available to rank covers by protection.

Use the cover carefully while shooting
- Keep the camera under shelter when you are not actively taking photographs.
- Stop shooting and put the camera away if rain blows under the cover, water gathers around openings, or the cover slips out of position. This is a cautious practical rule, not a Canon-published exposure threshold.
- Avoid placing the camera on wet ground or other wet surfaces.
- Keep a clean, dry cloth available for exterior droplets. Canon’s specific wipe-and-service advice is published for the M50 Mark II, so use the original M50 manual or Canon support for model-specific handling instructions.
What to do if the camera gets wet
If the cover fails or the camera is exposed to rain, stop using it and keep further moisture away. Canon’s Mark II handling guidance says to wipe droplets with a clean, dry cloth and contact a Canon Service Center if the camera gets wet. That guidance is for the EOS M50 Mark II; original M50 owners should consult the EOS M50 support page and their model’s manual for applicable instructions.
Canon’s U.S. EOS M50 support and warranty language addresses water damage, but coverage depends on the applicable regional terms and circumstances. Do not assume that water damage will be covered or excluded in every case; check the terms for your region.

Prevent condensation when moving between cold and warm places
Rain protection and condensation prevention are different problems. Canon recommends, for the M50 Mark II, putting the camera in a sealed plastic bag when moving it from cold to warm conditions so it can adjust gradually and condensation risk is reduced. The bag is for acclimation, not for actively shooting in rain. If condensation is visible, Mark II guidance says not to use the camera until it has evaporated; original M50 owners should confirm model-specific advice in their own manual.

Rain cover or sealed bag: which is for what?
| Protection method | Use it for | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Camera rain cover | Keeping rain off the camera while taking photographs | Fit for the M50 body and mounted lens, coverage, secure placement, and access to controls. Canon’s ERC-E5M page describes a cover’s intended purpose but does not verify M50 compatibility. |
| Sealed plastic bag | Gradual acclimation during a move from cold to warm conditions, as described in Canon’s Mark II guidance | Keep the camera sealed while it adjusts. This is not a substitute for a rain cover during shooting. |
