Give the AI your assignment, rubric and own draft, then ask for a few specific revision priorities—not replacement sentences. A useful tutor prompt keeps you in control: it points to places that need thought, asks questions about your intent and leaves every revision to you.
Use this prompt to get feedback without handing over authorship
Adapt this prompt to your assignment. It is an editorially composed template based on published tutoring principles, not an official or tested prompt.

Act as a writing tutor. Help me improve my own essay rather than writing it for me. I will provide the assignment, rubric, and a draft. Do not write or rewrite sentences, produce a thesis, add evidence, or complete any section. First, briefly restate what the assignment asks and ask me one clarifying question if something important is missing. Then identify up to three high-priority issues in my draft. For each, point to the relevant passage, explain the issue as a question or observation, and ask me what I intended. Focus first on whether my claims answer the prompt, whether my reasoning is clear, and whether evidence supports the claims. Do not invent sources or facts. End with one next step I can do myself. Wait for my response before giving more feedback.

Attach or paste the assignment directions and rubric, then share your own draft or the paragraph you want to work on. If the tool restates the assignment incorrectly, correct it before relying on its comments. You can use the template with any AI tutor that accepts text; the sources here do not establish a uniquely suitable service.
Ask for a few prioritized comments, not a rewrite
A request for feedback on everything can produce a long, difficult-to-use response. Limit the first pass to a few high-priority issues and require the tutor to point to the relevant passage. That lets you see what the comment refers to and decide whether it fits your intention.
Useful feedback can address three levels:
- Task: Does the claim or paragraph answer what the assignment asks?
- Reasoning: Does the explanation show how the evidence supports the claim?
- Next step: What should you check or reconsider as you revise?
A 2025 review by Sapolnach Prompiengchai, Charith Narreddy and Steve Joordens describes formative assessment in terms of where learners are going, where they currently are and how to move forward. Asking for task, reasoning and next-step feedback translates that broad approach into a practical draft review. The review is a preprint, not a completed peer-reviewed consensus.
Keep the exchange staged and the decisions yours
Ask one question at a time, and tell the tutor to wait for your answer before continuing. OpenAI’s 2023 published tutor prompt recommends guiding learners with questions rather than supplying solutions immediately: “Do not provide immediate answers or solutions to problems but help students generate their own answers by asking leading questions.” It also encourages hints and asks learners to explain ideas in their own words.
Use the feedback as another perspective, not as a grade or an instruction to follow automatically. OpenAI’s educator FAQ says models can be biased or inaccurate and cannot capture the full complexity of a student or educational context; it advises human oversight in assessment decisions. You decide what to revise, using your understanding of the assignment and your instructor’s guidance.

Check accuracy, policy and privacy before sharing coursework
Verify factual claims and interpretations against assigned readings, credible primary sources and instructor guidance. OpenAI’s teacher guide similarly advises learners to consider whether ChatGPT’s answers are credible and accurate and to confirm information through primary resources.
- Check your instructor’s or school’s rules on AI assistance before submitting coursework to a tool or using its feedback.
- Review the service’s current privacy and data-handling terms before sharing a draft, especially if it contains identifying or sensitive information.
- Do not treat generated citations, sources or factual claims as verified; check them independently.
UNESCO distinguishes formative automated writing evaluation, intended to support improvement before submission, from summative systems that score writing. For essay revision, the useful role is formative: identify something to think through while you still make the decisions and edits.
