How to Promote Music on Streaming Services Without Artificial Streams

A practical guide to promoting releases with real listeners, vetting marketing services, monitoring analytics, and responding to suspicious playlist activity.

Promote music by making it easy for real listeners to discover and share: plan the release, use each platform’s artist tools, create a clear reason to listen, and track where your audience comes from. Avoid anyone who guarantees streams, followers, or playlist placement for money. Those offers can put your music, royalties, and distributor relationship at risk.

What counts as artificial streaming—and why avoid it?

Artificial streaming is activity that inflates plays or engagement without genuine listeners, including bots, automated systems, fake accounts, and coordinated manipulation. Spotify says artificial streams do not earn royalties, do not count toward public stream numbers or charts, and do not improve recommendations. Depending on severity, Spotify may remove tracks from playlists; distributors may issue warnings, charge penalties, suspend an account, or remove music. See Spotify for Artists’ artificial streaming guidance.

Spotify also says a service guaranteeing streams, followers, or playlist placement in exchange for money is not legitimate. Apple Music for Artists says a company or person claiming to obtain more Apple Music plays for a fee is not authorized by Apple, and warns that such methods often involve bots or fake accounts. YouTube prohibits artificial increases in views, likes, comments, and other metrics, as well as promotion of services that inflate them. Its policy does allow genuine requests that viewers subscribe, like, share, or comment. Read Spotify Support’s guidance on paid third-party services, Apple Music for Artists’ stream-manipulation guidance, and YouTube’s fake engagement policy.

How to promote a release safely

Before release: prepare the destination and the story

  • Make a release plan. Decide what you will share and when, and prepare customized assets that make the release recognizable and easy to pass along.
  • Keep your artist profile useful. Update your image, biography, lyrics, website, and any embedded player so a curious listener can quickly learn who you are and find the music.
  • Use direct links. Give fans a simple path to the release rather than making them search for the track. Apple’s organic audience-development recommendations include release planning, social posts, share links, profile updates, and an up-to-date website.
  • Use official editorial submission tools where available. Check the platform’s current artist interface and eligibility rather than relying on old screenshots or third-party claims. A 2022 academic article described Spotify for Artists’ “Pitch A Song” route as free; interface details and eligibility can change. The article is available from UC eScholarship.

During the campaign: give people a genuine reason to listen

  • Share the release story, a performance, a collaboration, or a short-form video that gives listeners context and an easy way to hear the track.
  • Invite real engagement. You can ask viewers to subscribe, like, share, or comment; do not pay for or coordinate fake activity, and do not ask people to loop tracks or use extra accounts to inflate plays.
  • Direct effort toward places where you already have evidence of an audience. Apple Music for Artists recommends using audience statistics to identify cities and towns with fans; its guidance also recommends making concert dates discoverable through Shazam.
  • Keep the call to action simple: listen, save or share if they like it, and come to a show if one is nearby. Do not promise rewards in exchange for artificial play activity.

When considering a PR or marketing service

Ask the provider to explain exactly how it reaches listeners, what work it will deliver, and how results will be reported. Check reviews, speak with artists who have used it, and search for reports of artificial-stream problems. Spotify specifically recommends researching a provider’s methods and reputation. A provider should be able to describe its approach without guaranteeing a stream count or placement.

Option What to look for Warning sign
Platform artist tools Official submission, profile, audience, or concert-discovery features and clear eligibility. A third party charging simply to submit you for consideration on a user playlist.
Independent PR or marketing Transparent methods, specific deliverables, relevant audience fit, credible prior-client feedback, and trackable results. Guaranteed streams, follower growth, or playlist placement in return for payment.
Self-directed promotion Shareable assets, direct links, real audience conversations, and a clear release story. Looping instructions, fake accounts, engagement exchanges, or purchased activity.

There is no universal price or effectiveness benchmark established for legitimate promotion. Judge an offer by its method, audience fit, evidence, deliverables, and whether its results can be reviewed in platform analytics—not by a promised number of plays.

How to recognize suspicious activity

Review analytics for patterns that do not fit your campaign or audience. Spotify and IMPALA identify warning signs such as:

Audio-Technica ATH-M20x Professional Studio Monitor Headphones, Black | Closed-back design with 40mm drivers and 3m cable for monitoring, tracking and mixing
  • Advanced build quality and engineering; Designed for studio tracking and mixing
  • 40 mm drivers with rare earth magnets and copper clad aluminum wire voice coils
  • Tuned for enhanced low frequency performance
  • Circumaural design contours around the ears for excellent sound isolation in loud environments
  • Convenient single side cable exit
  • Unexplained, short-lived spikes in streams or sudden follower growth.
  • Unexpected countries or cities that do not match your known audience or promotion.
  • Streams coming from sources that do not make sense for the release.
  • Stream counts that rise sharply without a corresponding change in listeners or meaningful engagement.
  • Playlist additions that appear unrelated to your genre, audience, or normal discovery pattern.

These are reasons to investigate, not proof of fraud by themselves. A legitimate post, playlist, performance, or media mention can cause a real spike. Compare the timing, geography, sources, listeners, and engagement with what you actually did. IMPALA’s April 2024 streaming-manipulation guidance discusses these kinds of pattern checks.

What to do if your song lands on a suspicious playlist

  1. Save evidence. Record the playlist name and URL, the date you noticed it, relevant screenshots, and any unusual activity in your platform analytics.
  2. Preserve campaign records. Keep dated receipts, provider messages, contracts, campaign details, and records of placements or outreach. This helps distinguish activity you arranged from activity you did not.
  3. Contact your label or distributor. Tell them what you observed and share the evidence. Spotify advises artists to pass suspicious playlist details to their label or distributor.
  4. Report the playlist through the platform’s official reporting route. Use the current Spotify reporting option or the relevant DSP channel; IMPALA also recommends reporting through the applicable service.
  5. Do not try to counteract suspicious activity with more activity. Do not loop the track, buy streams, or use extra accounts. Keep promotion focused on real listeners while the issue is reviewed.

What the available figures do—and do not—show

There is no established general success rate, expected stream count, or typical legitimate-promotion budget in the cited platform guidance. IMPALA’s April 2024 document reports that Pex counted more than 1 million modified audio tracks on digital streaming services in January 2024; that figure concerns modified tracks, not a count of artificial streams or proof that every such track was fraudulent.

  • Frequency Response: 10 Hertz to 20 kilohertz

IMPALA also reported that Spotify began charging labels and distributors a €10 monthly penalty per track deemed to have significant artificial-streaming activity in April 2024. That is a dated account of policy at that time, not a statement of current fee terms. Spotify’s current artist guidance describes a per-track charge for flagrant artificial streaming without specifying an amount on the cited page.
