To program an RCA universal remote, first identify its exact model or revision and follow the matching instructions and code list. RCA remotes do not all use the same buttons or setup sequence. Start at RCA’s remote control support page to find the relevant codes and programming help.
Identify your remote and the device you want to control
Look for the model number or revision printed on the remote, then use the corresponding instructions—not a sequence chosen just because it looks similar. Record the device type (such as TV or DVD player) and its brand. The code list must match both the remote model and the device type.

For instance, the RCRN04GR/RCRN04GZ instructions describe four programming methods. The RCR414BHE manual has a different key layout and its own programming and code-retrieval guidance. A code listed for one RCA remote or an RCA television is not automatically a universal code for every RCA remote or TV.

Choose the programming method in your model’s instructions
Use the method your remote’s manual provides. For the RCRN04GR/RCRN04GZ, VOXX lists auto code search, brand code search, direct code entry, and manual code search. These method names and instructions apply to those models; other RCA remotes may differ.

For any search method, aim the remote at the device and watch for it to respond. Store the working code as directed by the manual. If you need a button-by-button sequence, follow the RCRN04GR/RCRN04GZ programming instructions or the manual for your own model rather than applying those steps to another remote.
Test the code beyond the power button
After setup, test power and the functions you actually use: for example, volume, channel, input selection, or playback controls where applicable. A code may operate some functions but not others. If essential controls do not work, try another code in the correct list or repeat the model’s search procedure to find a better match. Full function coverage is not guaranteed for every device.

Why your RCA remote may not work
If the device does not respond, work through these checks. The VOXX troubleshooting guide covers these points for the RCRN04GR/RCRN04GZ; use your own model’s manual for model-specific directions.
- Check the device mode. Select the mode for the device you are trying to control.
- Check the batteries. Make sure they are installed in the correct orientation and replace them with fresh batteries if needed.
- Clear the path. Remove obstructions and aim at the device’s infrared sensor.
- Revisit the code. If the remote accepts a direct code but some functions still fail, try another supported code or the alternative search method in the matching instructions.
When to consider a replacement remote
If your remote is lost, damaged, or remains unusable after you have checked the mode, batteries, line of sight, and correct programming instructions, a replacement is an option. RCA’s catalog lists a 3-Device Universal Remote Control. Before buying any replacement, confirm compatibility with your exact device and make sure you can access the correct code list and manual. You can use RCA’s support and code lookup without buying a replacement.
