You can program a universal remote to a Yamaha receiver without the original remote, but the correct code and setup steps depend on the exact receiver and universal-remote models. Find both model numbers, then use the universal remote maker’s code lookup or code-search instructions for a Yamaha audio or AV receiver. Yamaha’s receiver manuals describe the opposite task—programming a Yamaha remote to control other devices—so their button sequences are not instructions for programming a third-party universal remote.
What you need before setup
- Yamaha receiver model: Check the front or rear panel label, or your purchase records. Use the exact model to find the appropriate documentation in Yamaha’s U.S. manual library.

- Choose the documented setup method. If the remote supports direct code entry, use the code listed for your receiver. If it offers automatic code search, follow that remote’s exact key sequence and timing. The instructions vary by remote; there is no single universal sequence to give without its model number.
- Test the controls you need. Check power, volume, mute, input selection, and any additional functions you rely on. A code may provide only partial control, so test each function rather than assuming that one working button means everything is supported.
- If the first attempt fails, try the next documented code or repeat the search. Confirm that the remote is in its audio/receiver device mode, and check the batteries and line of sight to the receiver. Follow the remote maker’s reset or retry instructions if needed.
Why Yamaha receiver instructions can be misleading
The setup procedure in a Yamaha manual may look relevant but often addresses the reverse direction. For example, the RX-A3070 online manual explains how to register a playback device’s code in the Yamaha remote: it uses CODE SET, an input-selection key, and a four-digit code. The RX-V573 owner’s manual likewise describes storing codes in the Yamaha remote for external devices, including a code-search method. It says that remote transmits infrared signals and cautions that an external device may not respond even after a code is registered. Those details do not establish a third-party universal-remote code for a Yamaha receiver.
What to do if you do not know the code
Use the universal remote maker’s lookup for your exact receiver, or its code-search process if one is documented. Yamaha’s support library can help you locate the correct receiver manual, but the Yamaha materials described above do not supply a verified code list for an unspecified third-party remote. Choosing a replacement universal remote
If you need to buy one, look for an IR universal remote whose maker explicitly lists your exact Yamaha receiver model or confirms support for its code. Compare model-specific code-library support, IR and line-of-sight requirements, access to the receiver functions you need, and the seller’s return terms. Do not assume that every generic universal remote works, and verify compatibility before relying on a purchase.
