First identify which remote you want to program: a Yamaha receiver remote for a TV or player, a TV remote for the Yamaha receiver, or a universal remote for the receiver. Those are different procedures. Find the receiver’s exact model number and use its Yamaha manual or code list; button sequences and supported features vary by model.

Yamaha’s US manual library includes model-specific manuals and TV-remote-code documents. Locate your receiver’s model before following any procedure. Do not assume a code or button sequence from another Yamaha receiver applies to yours.

Before you start: find the model numbers
- Find the receiver model. Check the front or rear panel, or the label on the unit.
- Identify the remote. Note whether it is the Yamaha remote supplied with the receiver, a TV remote, or a universal remote. If it is a Yamaha remote, its model number may be printed on the remote itself.
- Find the exact receiver documentation. Search the manual library for the receiver model and open its owner manual or any model-specific remote-code instructions.
- Decide which functions matter. Write down what you need to control, such as power, volume, mute, playback, or input selection. A code may operate some functions without supporting every button.
Program the Yamaha remote to control a TV or player
Use this path when the remote that needs setup is the one supplied with the Yamaha receiver and you want it to operate an external component. The receiver’s manual should give the code list, the control area or input assignment, and the exact registration sequence. Yamaha manuals such as those for the RX-A800 and RX-A2010 describe model-specific external-component code setup; their procedures should not be treated as universal instructions.

- Open the receiver manual’s remote-control-code section and identify the correct device category and control area or input.
- Choose a code listed for the TV or playback device’s manufacturer. Follow the manual’s registration sequence exactly, including the buttons and timing it specifies.
- Test the functions you need while the remote is set to the intended control area. Check power, volume, mute, playback, or input selection as relevant.
- If the code does not work or only some functions respond, try another listed code only if the manual provides alternatives. Test the needed functions again.
If the buttons operate the wrong component, revisit the control-area or input assignment in the receiver manual. A code can be assigned to a particular area, so entering a plausible code alone may not complete the setup.

Program TV remote codes into a Yamaha remote
This is the reverse direction: you are entering TV remote codes into the Yamaha remote so it can operate the TV. Yamaha publishes instructions for particular HTR and RX-V receivers, but the document title “How do I program my TV remote control codes into the Yamaha remote” does not mean the procedure applies to every Yamaha model. Find the instructions for your exact receiver in the Yamaha manual library, then follow that model’s steps. Do not borrow a sequence from a different receiver generation.
Use learning mode only when the remote supports it
Some Yamaha remotes can learn commands from another remote, which can help when preset codes do not cover a needed function. The RX-Z11 manual, for example, describes “Programming codes from other remote controls (LEARN)” and learning commands onto supported buttons. This is an example, not a feature guaranteed on all Yamaha remotes.

- Check the exact receiver and remote manual for a learning or LEARN section.
- Confirm that the manual says the function and button you need can be learned.
- Place the two remotes and initiate learning exactly as described in that manual; the required button sequence and positioning are model-specific.
- Test the learned command on the intended device. If the remote does not support learning, use a listed code or another supported control method instead.
Try HDMI Control for compatible devices
HDMI Control can let a compatible TV remote operate some receiver functions without entering an infrared code. It is not a universal substitute for code programming: both devices must support the needed functions, be connected appropriately, and have HDMI Control configured on both ends. Yamaha’s RX-A2A guide describes completing HDMI Control link setup and notes that some remote color-key behavior depends on HDMI Control being enabled. The steps and available functions can differ on other models.

- Connect the devices as their manuals specify, then enable HDMI Control and complete the link setup on both devices.
- Test the specific receiver functions you need from the TV remote.
If HDMI Control is unsupported or cannot provide the needed controls, use an infrared code procedure supported by the receiver and remote instead.

Troubleshoot common setup problems
- The wrong device responds: check the selected control area or input and its assignment in the receiver manual.
- The code was accepted, but only some buttons work: test the functions you need; try another code only if the model’s code list offers one. Otherwise, check whether that remote supports learning or use another supported control method.
- The TV remote does not control the receiver over HDMI: confirm HDMI Control compatibility, connections, settings, and link setup on both devices. The RX-A2A instructions document this requirement for that model; other receivers may differ.
- You cannot find a dependable procedure: search Yamaha’s manual library using the complete receiver model number. Do not rely on an unverified sequence from a different model.
If the original remote is missing
Before buying a replacement, verify that it is compatible with the exact receiver model and provides the functions you need. Yamaha’s manuals and code references are model-specific; a remote described generally as a Yamaha receiver remote is not enough to establish compatibility.
