For a public URL, use a debugger that fetches the page; for a private, staging, or localhost page, use a checker that accepts pasted HTML. Then verify the live URL again before sharing: a pasted-source preview cannot test crawler access, and platforms may cache or display cards differently.
What an Open Graph preview checks
Open Graph metadata sits in a page’s HTML head and describes the page as a rich object. The protocol’s four required properties are og:title, og:type, og:image, and og:url. An og:description is useful optional metadata. The specification also documents image fields such as MIME type, dimensions, secure URL, and alt text; it says an image should specify og:image:alt. See the Open Graph protocol specification.

A preview tool can show which metadata it reads and simulate a share card. It does not guarantee that every social platform will use an identical image, crop, title, or layout.
Preview a page that is publicly reachable
- Set the metadata. Add the page’s Open Graph properties to the document head. Ensure the image URL points to the intended image and the title, description, and URL correspond to this page.
- Enter the exact public URL in a fetch-based debugger. For example, Liinks Open Graph Debugger describes a workflow that fetches a public page, inspects metadata, and renders a preview. Check the raw values as well as the visual card.
- Check for missing or mismatched values. Confirm the fetched
og:imageis correct, and review the title, description, and canonical URL. A tool may report missing fields or show simulated cards, but its simulation is not the destination platform’s final rendering. - After edits, request a fresh crawl where available. A card that still shows old information may reflect a cached crawl rather than unchanged source markup. The Liinks debugger describes Facebook and LinkedIn re-scraping and suggests a changed query-string URL for some other preview caches; check the current instructions for your destination platform.
- Inspect the result on the destination. Where possible, use the platform’s own preview or recrawl workflow and check how the actual share appears.
Preview staging, private, or localhost markup
A fetch-based debugger cannot inspect a page it cannot reach. During development, use a tool that accepts pasted HTML or the page head. Online OpenGraph preview free is described as extracting Open Graph and Twitter Card tags from pasted content. This is a markup check: it does not prove the eventual public URL, image, or metadata will be accessible to a crawler. The tool’s page has not been independently verified here, so confirm its current behavior before relying on it.
#1 Best Overall
- Open the rendered page source or copy the relevant HTML head.
- Paste the markup into a checker that explicitly supports direct HTML input.
- Review the extracted tags and simulated card for errors.
- Once the page is public, repeat the check against its actual URL with a fetch-based debugger.
Choose the right kind of checker
| Need | Use | What the result can establish |
|---|---|---|
| See what a crawler can fetch from a live page | A debugger that fetches a public URL | The metadata visible to that tool’s crawl and its simulated preview; not a universal guarantee of platform rendering. |
| Inspect a page that is still private or local | A checker that accepts pasted HTML | What the supplied markup contains; not whether a live crawler can fetch the eventual page or image. |
| Make a platform fetch a page again | The destination platform’s debugger or recrawl process, where available | A refreshed crawl according to that platform’s current behavior; it is distinct from a generic visual simulator. |
Before choosing a checker, look for raw metadata alongside the visual preview, missing-tag warnings, image metadata details, separate platform simulations, and links to platform-specific refresh steps. The reviewed examples establish these as useful distinctions, not as a guarantee that any one tool supports every feature.
Common preview problems and what to check
- The wrong image appears: inspect the fetched
og:imagevalue and ensure it identifies the intended image. If source markup is correct but the card is stale, request a recrawl using the destination platform’s current process. - No preview is returned for a development page: a public-URL debugger cannot fetch a private or localhost page. Use pasted HTML to check the markup, then test the public URL after deployment.
- The preview looks right in one tool but differs elsewhere: tools simulate cards, while platforms may parse, cache, crop, or display them differently. Check the destination’s own preview or shared result.
- A source edit does not change the shared card: the platform may still have an earlier crawl cached. Use its recrawl mechanism when available; the exact refresh process varies by platform.
- A pasted-source check passes but the live share fails: pasted markup does not establish that the deployed page or image is reachable by a crawler. Recheck the deployed URL with a fetch-based debugger.
Or skip the browser setup
If you also need a rendered screenshot of the page, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request captures a URL; for example, using cURL:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for options. This captures a rendered page; it is not a substitute for an Open Graph debugger that inspects metadata or a platform-specific recrawl.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a preview guarantee that every platform will show the same card?
No. A debugger’s preview is a diagnostic simulation; platforms can parse, cache, crop, or display cards differently.
Can I check an Open Graph image before a page is public?
Yes. A checker that accepts pasted HTML can inspect the supplied tags, but it cannot prove that the eventual public page or image will be crawlable.
