For example, change the header to normal document flow for that capture. Because this can move page content, inspect the resulting image rather than assuming the change is layout-neutral.
Why a sticky header can appear more than once
A full-page screenshot captures the scrollable document, but tools do not all capture it the same way. If a tool captures multiple viewport positions and stitches them together, a header pinned during scrolling may appear in more than one segment. That is a possible consequence of sticky positioning and stitching, not a result guaranteed in every browser or capture method.
CSS position: sticky keeps an element in its scrolling context once it crosses an inset threshold; position: fixed ordinarily positions it relative to a viewport-like containing block. The details depend on the element’s ancestors and scrolling context. See MDN’s documentation on CSS positioning.
Use a screenshot-time CSS override in Playwright
Playwright’s screenshot API accepts a stylesheet through the style option. Use it to change only the header during capture, without editing the website’s saved stylesheet. Playwright does not document a dedicated sticky-header toggle; the CSS selector and override must suit the page you are capturing.

For instance, inspect the header in browser developer tools and confirm that the selector matches the intended element and not every header on the page. Playwright documents the screenshot options, including fullPage and style, in its Page screenshot API.
What the override changes
position: static returns a sticky header to normal document flow, so it can appear once rather than remaining pinned as the capture proceeds. It can also change where content sits. A fixed header is already outside normal flow in typical cases; making it static can add its box back into the flow and cause a larger shift. The exact result depends on the page’s layout and CSS.
Keep the change narrow
- Target the one header that repeats, rather than applying a broad rule such as
* { position: static !important; }. - Override other positioning properties only if the page’s CSS requires it; avoid removing unrelated sticky navigation, sidebars, or banners.
- Check whether the header is sticky or fixed and whether an ancestor establishes the relevant scrolling or containing block.
Check the screenshot before relying on it
- Inspect the header’s computed
positionand its relevant inset, such astop. For sticky positioning, the scrolling context and a non-autoinset on the relevant axis matter. - Capture the page with the narrow screenshot-time override.
- Review the output: confirm the header appears the intended number of times, content is not obscured or shifted unacceptably, and unrelated sticky elements remain as expected.
- If the layout is unsuitable, revise the selector or choose a capture that better fits the task, such as a viewport image or a separate header-element image.
Choose a different capture when the pinned state matters
If the header must keep its pinned appearance, a full-page stitched image may not be the right representation. Capture a single viewport at the desired scroll position, or capture the header element separately and combine it with the page image only if that composite is acceptable for your use. Chrome DevTools Protocol’s Page.captureScreenshot describes capturing beyond the viewport and clipping to a region, but that API description does not promise identical sticky or fixed-element rendering across tools, layouts, or browser versions. Troubleshooting
- The header still repeats: The selector may not match the element, or another element may be the repeating bar. Verify the matched node and computed positioning; adjust the selector to target the actual header.
- Content shifts or overlaps: Changing a positioned header to static changes its relationship to document flow. Try a different targeted override or use a viewport/element capture if the resulting full-page layout is not suitable.
- Other sticky elements change too: Narrow the selector. Avoid page-wide rules that reset all positioned elements.
- The header’s behavior differs between tools: Full-page capture implementations vary. Check the actual capture output rather than assuming a browser’s or tool’s behavior matches another’s.
- The pinned look is essential: Do not force the header into normal flow if that defeats the purpose of the image. Capture the desired viewport state or the header separately instead.
