To reduce repeat sink and shower clogs, stop hair, food scraps, grease and oil before they enter the plumbing: fit a compatible drain screen or strainer, empty it regularly, and clean accessible stoppers and traps when buildup appears. Bathroom drains need hair control; kitchen sinks need grease and food-scrap control. These habits reduce common sources of blockage, but they cannot guarantee a clog-free drain.
Why drains clog again
Hair can tangle in a drain and catch other debris. In bathroom plumbing, it can mix with soap and oils; soap scum, slime and mineral deposits can also narrow the passage. Grease and oil may enter as liquids, then cool into waxy deposits on pipe surfaces. Older cast-iron or galvanized steel pipes can be rough or pitted inside, giving debris more places to catch. These causes and buildup locations are described by This Old House.

Material can collect at the opening, around a bathroom sink’s pop-up stopper linkage, in the P-trap, or farther along the pipe. If a drain slows again after its opening is cleared, the blockage may be at an accessible component or deeper in the line; symptoms alone do not identify the exact location.
Prevent hair and soap buildup in bathroom drains
Use a compatible screen or catcher
Place a drain screen, grate or hair catcher over the shower or sink opening so hair is captured before it enters the plumbing. Fort Smith Water Utilities recommends a drain protector or mesh screen for shower and sink drains, and the City of Ferndale recommends a screen or grate to reduce hair and soap-scum problems: Fort Smith Water Utilities and the City of Ferndale.

The cited guidance does not identify a best brand, material or model, and it does not report a measured reduction in clog recurrence.
Empty the catcher and check the stopper
Remove captured hair and debris regularly and put it in the trash rather than rinsing it into the drain. Fort Smith Water Utilities also advises gathering loose hair and throwing it away. If useful for your household, brushing hair before bathing can reduce loose hair near the drain.

Choose a screen or strainer that suits the fixture
Before buying a catcher, check the drain opening’s size and shape and how its stopper operates. A screen that does not sit securely or interferes with the stopper will be inconvenient; one that is difficult to remove is less likely to be cleaned regularly. The cited municipal guidance recommends a compatible screen or grate but does not test or endorse particular products.
What to do when a drain keeps slowing
Check accessible parts first
Remove visible debris at the opening. For a bathroom sink, inspect the pop-up stopper and linkage. If you are comfortable working on the plumbing and can do so safely, check the P-trap for trapped material. This Old House identifies the stopper linkage, P-trap and pipe walls as places where buildup can collect.

Use physical clearing methods for a blockage
For an actual blockage, physical methods such as plunging, a drain snake or hand auger, or cleaning the P-trap may be preferable to starting with a harsh chemical opener. Chemical cleaner left in a blocked pipe can expose someone opening or snaking the drain to burns. If you have already used a chemical product, tell the plumber before they begin work.

On a septic system, EPA advises avoiding chemical drain openers and says boiling water or a drain snake may be used for a clog. Boiling water is not suitable for every plumbing material or fixture, so follow fixture and product instructions rather than treating it as a universal remedy.

Use maintenance treatments cautiously
This Old House describes occasional hot-water flushing as something that may help with soap residue, and baking soda with vinegar as light maintenance rather than a solution for a major clog. It also mentions enzyme-based cleaners as a slower maintenance option. None of these measures is established as a guarantee against recurring clogs or as a proven way to reduce recurrence by a particular amount.
If the drain repeatedly slows after you clear the opening and accessible parts, the issue may be farther along the line. A plumber can investigate; the cited guidance does not set a universal number of repeat clogs that automatically requires professional service.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Septic-system upkeep is separate from drain-clog prevention
EPA’s general septic guidance says an average household septic system should be inspected by a septic service professional at least every three years, and household septic tanks are typically pumped every three to five years. These are general septic-maintenance intervals, not drain-clog-prevention rules; household and system characteristics affect pumping frequency. Follow advice suited to your system.
