In Confluence Cloud, restrict access to the sensitive page and review the permissions on its space and parent pages. Search visibility follows access: Atlassian says its Search Results macro shows only content a viewer has permission to view. Public search engines are a separate concern, so also check anonymous access if the site or space is exposed to the public.
First distinguish internal search from public search
Internal Confluence search is governed by the viewer’s effective permissions. A search result is not, by itself, proof that the viewer can open the page or read its contents. Atlassian specifically documents that the Search Results macro displays only pages and other content types for which the viewer has View permission. That statement applies to the built-in macro; check the documentation and configuration for any third-party search integration or external indexing service.

Public search-engine indexing is different. If anonymous users can access the site and a space grants them access, that space’s open content may be available to search engines. Review public access even when the main concern is a page appearing in Google or another external search engine.
How to restrict a sensitive page in Confluence Cloud
- Check your plan. Atlassian says permissions and restrictions are not customizable on the Free plan. Its Standard plan documentation lists space and content permissions. Confirm the plan and available controls on your own site before relying on page restrictions. Atlassian’s Confluence Standard documentation
- Review who can view the space. Space permissions determine who can access content in that space. Check the users and groups with View access, including access obtained through group membership. Confluence permissions are additive: if one group grants a person access, another group’s lack of access does not necessarily remove it. Atlassian’s permissions overview
- Restrict the page’s audience. Open the page’s sharing or restriction controls and review both General access and Specific access. Set General access to Restricted where appropriate, then allow only the users or groups who need to view the page. The exact interface can vary as Atlassian updates its controls. - Inspect parent pages and folders. A page cannot be more accessible than its container, and view restrictions on a parent page or folder are inherited by its children. Check the full path above the sensitive page, not just its own settings. Atlassian’s page restriction guide
- Remove links if the title itself is sensitive. A link to restricted content may still be visible to someone who can view the page where the link appears, and its URL may contain the page title. Remove links from broadly accessible pages if revealing the page’s existence or title is also a problem. A restriction protects the content; it does not guarantee that no one can encounter a link or title-bearing URL.
Review anonymous and public access separately
Anonymous access has site-, space-, and content-level controls. Check whether anonymous visitors are allowed at the site level, whether the relevant space grants them access, and whether the page itself is restricted from anonymous users. If anonymous access is enabled and granted to a space, its unrestricted content can be public and may be indexed by search engines. Guests and other non-anonymous users are not the same as the public. Their visibility depends on the access granted to them and their role; review those permissions as part of the intended audience. Atlassian’s guide to guest access
Understand who can still administer access
Page restrictions are useful for separating ordinary users, but they are not necessarily a barrier against administrators. Atlassian says space administrators can see a list of restricted pages in a space and remove restrictions. On Premium and Enterprise, organization administrators can use admin key to view and change access to any content. Include these roles in your confidentiality assessment. Verify the result with an account that should not have access
After changing permissions, validate the behavior rather than relying on the settings screen alone. Use a test account that is not part of any approved user or group, and check the affected page through both search and its known URL.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Search for the exact page title.
- Search for a distinctive phrase from the page.
- Try opening the page using its URL.
This is a recommended check, not a guarantee about connected tools or copies of the content. If a third-party app, external search provider, export, or downstream copy indexes Confluence, verify its indexing and permission-sync behavior separately. Atlassian’s documentation for the built-in Search Results macro does not establish how those other systems behave.

Why a page may still appear to the wrong person
- Space or group access remains open: review all groups and membership paths that grant View access, not just one user’s direct permissions.
- An ancestor has broader access or different restrictions: inspect the page’s parent chain and its space-level permissions.
- A visible link reveals the title: remove links from pages available to a wider audience if title exposure matters.
- The concern is public indexing: review anonymous access at all three levels rather than treating internal search settings as a public-search control.
- A separate search product is involved: assess that product and any exported or copied content on their own terms.
Atlassian describes Confluence as open by default within the permissions of its containers, with content restrictions used to narrow access where needed. For sensitive information, the dependable control is to limit who can view it and verify that the surrounding space, groups, ancestors, and public-access settings do not grant a broader route.
