Choose a book-style foldable if you’ll regularly use its wider inner screen for documents, reading, multitasking, or video. Choose a flip-style foldable if you want a familiar tall smartphone that folds into a more compact shape, with quick tasks available on its cover screen. Both are foldable phones; the practical difference is whether you want more workspace or less bulk when the phone is closed.
What’s the difference between a foldable phone and a flip phone?
In current smartphone terminology, both are foldable phones. A book-style foldable opens sideways to reveal a wider, tablet-like display. A flip-style foldable opens upward into a conventional tall phone and closes in half.

That distinction shapes everyday use: the book-style design makes room for more content at once, while the flip-style design prioritizes a smaller closed form and access to quick tasks on an outer cover display. Neither format is automatically better; it depends on how often you’ll use the larger inner screen and how much folded size matters to you.

Choose a book-style foldable for more screen workspace
The wider inner screen can make documents, reading, and side-by-side apps easier to view. Samsung’s July 29, 2026 lineup guide describes its Fold8 as suited to document work and multitasking. A larger screen may also be more comfortable for watching video, though that benefit matters most if you actually unfold the phone for media.

Choose a flip-style foldable for a compact closed shape
A flip-style phone gives you a tall smartphone display when open, then folds into a smaller shape for a pocket or bag. AT&T’s guide describes flip models as taking less room in pockets and bags. Their cover displays can also provide quick access to selected tasks without opening the phone; exactly what you can do depends on the model and its software.
A flip is the more natural fit if you want a conventional phone experience most of the time and value a compact closed device more than a tablet-like workspace.

How the current Samsung examples compare
Samsung’s July 29, 2026 business guide lists these display sizes and manufacturer-stated battery and wired-charging specifications for its named lineup. These figures describe specifications, not independent battery-life test results.
| Model | Main display | Cover display | Battery capacity | Wired charging |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra | 8 inches | 6.5 inches | 5,000 mAh | 45W |
| Galaxy Z Fold8 | 7.6 inches | 5.5 inches | 5,000 mAh | 45W |
| Galaxy Z Flip8 | 6.9 inches | 4.1 inches | 4,300 mAh | 25W |
Samsung for Business’s lineup guide says the compatible 45W charger required for the stated Fold8 fast-charging rate is sold separately. Check charger compatibility for the exact model before buying an accessory.
For an earlier comparison, Samsung’s U.S. guide lists the 2025 Galaxy Z Fold7 with an 8-inch inner screen, 6.5-inch external display, 4,400 mAh battery, and 215 g weight. Its rear camera setup includes a telephoto camera. The same guide lists the Galaxy Z Flip7 with a 6.9-inch inner display, 4.1-inch external display, 4,300 mAh battery, and 188 g weight. These are specifications for those models, not a substitute for checking the current phone available in your region. Samsung’s U.S. comparison guide provides the model details.

What to compare before choosing a specific phone
Form factor narrows the choice, but individual models differ. Before purchasing, compare:
Recommended Free Tools
- Screen dimensions: Check both the inner and cover display sizes against the apps and tasks you use most.
- Closed size, weight, and thickness: A foldable’s folded shape may suit your pocket, but compare the exact model’s dimensions and weight rather than assuming all flips or all books feel alike.
- Apps and multitasking: Check how your key apps behave on the larger inner display and whether the cover screen supports the quick tasks you want.
- Cameras: Compare camera configuration, including whether a model has a telephoto camera; the form factor alone does not determine the camera system.
- Battery and charging: Capacity and charging-rate specifications do not establish real-world endurance. Check independent testing if battery life is decisive for you, and verify whether a compatible charger is included.
- Price, availability, and carrier support: These vary by region and seller. Confirm the local price, model variant, and compatibility with your carrier before ordering.
- Durability and service terms: Check the exact model’s water and dust rating, warranty, and repair or protection terms. Ratings should not be assumed to carry across a brand’s lineup.
What to know about foldable screens, hinges, and care
Foldables have a hinge and a flexible inner screen, so it’s worth understanding the care instructions for the exact phone you’re considering. AT&T’s July 15, 2026 consumer guide says many models use a layered screen with a polymer substrate beneath ultra-thin glass and a protective polymer top layer. It notes that the inner surface can feel softer than regular phone glass and that a crease may be visible or felt. This is general guidance, not a specification that applies to every brand or model.
Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the hinge and screen, and check those instructions before removing a factory-installed screen protector. For practical care guidance, see AT&T’s guide to foldable phones.

Water and dust protection are model-specific. As a historical example, Samsung says the Galaxy Z Fold6 and Z Flip6 carry an IP48 rating: the devices were tested for submersion in up to 5 feet of fresh water for up to 30 minutes, and the rating covers solid particles larger than 1 mm. Samsung also says water resistance can diminish over time and those devices are not dust- or sand-resistant. That rating is specific to those models; it should not be applied to newer or other foldables. Samsung’s Fold6 and Flip6 support page explains the historical rating.
Make the choice based on the screen you’ll actually use
Pick a book-style foldable if the wider inner display will regularly help with reading, documents, multitasking, or video. Pick a flip-style foldable if you’d rather have a familiar tall phone that closes into a smaller shape and offers useful cover-screen access. Then compare exact models for comfort, apps, cameras, battery and charging, regional availability, and care requirements.
