If a screw hole is already stripped, replace the fastener with a roof-system-approved oversized screw; surface sealant alone cannot restore its holding strength.
Why metal-roofing screws strip or pull out
Overdriving is a common cause: excessive force can strip threads in the supporting material, crush or damage the sealing washer, or distort the panel. Underdriving can also cause trouble because a loose screw may not hold securely or seal against water. A screw driven at an angle may seat unevenly.

Not all failures are the same. A screw may withdraw from its support, strip its threads in thin steel, pull through the panel, or remain in place while its washer fails. The repair depends on which part is damaged. The New Zealand Metal Roofing Manufacturers’ Code of Practice explains that the screw point, thread shape and pitch affect pull-out performance, and that thread strip-out can limit performance in light-gauge steel. Its guidance is specific to New Zealand; follow the applicable local requirements and the roof-system manufacturer’s instructions elsewhere.

Identify the roof system and what the screw must bite into—such as a timber purlin, steel purlin or roof deck—before choosing a replacement or installing new fasteners. Use the type, grade, length, diameter, spacing and sealing washer specified for that application. The right choice depends on the panel, substrate material and thickness, and required pull-out performance; there is no universal screw size or replacement length.

Check the fastener, washer, coating and driver against the roof manufacturer’s instructions. A screw that fits the panel but is unsuitable for the supporting material may not provide dependable holding. The NZ Metal Roofing Manufacturers’ Code of Practice discusses the variables that affect fastener performance.
Drive screws without stripping them
- Set up for the specified fastener. Use the recommended roofing screw gun or a suitable torque- or depth-controlled tool. Set or test its control for the screw, hole and material combination; the cited guidance does not establish one torque setting for every roof.
- Use the matching driver. Fit the bit or socket intended for the screw head, and check that the driving setup is in good condition.
- Keep the screw perpendicular. Hold the tool square to the surface and start the screw without letting its tip wander.
- Stop at an even seal. Drive until the washer is compressed evenly, but not crushed, split or pushed out from under the head. Follow the roof-system manufacturer’s own seating criteria.
- Inspect the result. Check that the washer and panel are not damaged or distorted. In the trade guidance described by Hi-Tech, sealing material slightly visible at the washer edge indicates seating; none visible can mean insufficient compression, while material extruding beyond the washer indicates overdriving. Treat the manufacturer’s instructions as controlling.
The Rigid Building Systems Hi-Tech Roof System Installation Guide describes overdriving as a cause of stripped threads or sealing-washer damage. A clutch-equipped drill may be suitable when the roof-system instructions permit it.

Repair a stripped screw hole
- Remove the loose or spinning screw. Do not leave a fastener that no longer holds securely.
- Check what failed. Look for damaged threads or an enlarged hole in the support, a damaged washer, and panel distortion. If only the washer is damaged and the hole and threads remain sound, the Metal Construction Association manual describes a like-size replacement as the relevant remedy.
- Install an approved replacement. For a stripped hole, use an oversized screw approved for that roof system, with a suitable sealing washer. The correct size and length depend on the original hole, substrate and panel system; do not assume a particular gauge increase will work.
- Get specialist help when the damage is more than a fastener. If the support is damaged, the hole is enlarged, multiple screws are failing, or the panel is distorted, ask the roof-system manufacturer or a qualified roofing professional whether a larger repair or panel replacement is needed.
Do not rely on surface-applied sealant alone to repair a stripped hole. The Metal Construction Association’s metal-roof installation manual explains that a stripped fastener lacks the material and holding pressure needed to secure and seal the area. Sealant does not restore the screw’s mechanical grip.

What to compare when selecting tools or replacement screws
