That is Apple’s strongest built-in defense when another person may know your iPhone passcode. It adds biometric checks and, for critical changes, a one-hour delay. For a child’s managed iPhone, use Screen Time’s Passcode & Face ID > Don’t Allow restriction instead. Neither option is an administrator-style permanent lock, but each addresses a different threat.
Use Stolen Device Protection on a personal iPhone
Someone who knows your current device passcode can normally open the passcode settings and try to replace the code. Apple designed Stolen Device Protection for the more serious version of that problem: a thief who knows the passcode but cannot provide the owner’s biometrics.
Turn it on and choose Always
- Open Settings.
- Tap Face ID & Passcode, or Touch ID & Passcode on a Touch ID model.
- Enter the current device passcode.
- Tap Stolen Device Protection and turn it on.
- Under Require Security Delay, choose Always.
Apple’s current iPhone guide describes the feature and its controls at Stolen Device Protection for iPhone. The default location-based setting applies extra measures when the phone is away from recognized places such as home or work. Always applies them everywhere, which is the better choice if a partner, coworker, acquaintance, or local thief might attempt the change while you are in a familiar location.
What happens during a protected change?
For certain sensitive operations, the phone can require a successful Face ID or Touch ID check, a one-hour security delay, and another successful biometric check. There is no passcode fallback for actions that specifically require biometrics under Stolen Device Protection. The delay gives you time to use Find My, mark the phone as lost, or secure your Apple Account.

The feature also covers selected operations beyond the device passcode, including changing the Apple Account password, signing out of the Apple Account, adding or removing Face ID or Touch ID, and turning off Stolen Device Protection. It does not prevent every setting or app from being changed, and it does not make passcode changes permanently impossible.
Requirements and availability
- iOS 17.3 or later.
- A device passcode.
- Face ID or Touch ID already configured.
- Find My enabled.
- Two-factor authentication enabled for your Apple Account.
- Location Services and Significant Locations for familiar-location behavior.
The exact menu and availability can vary by iPhone model, biometric hardware, region, and iOS release. Stolen Device Protection must be enabled before the phone is lost or stolen; it cannot be added retroactively.
For a child’s iPhone, restrict Passcode & Face ID with Screen Time
Apple documents a separate parental-control route for a child’s device managed through Screen Time or Family Sharing. It can block changes to the passcode, Touch ID, and Face ID.

- Open Settings.
- Tap Screen Time.
- Under Family, tap the child’s name.
- Tap Content & Privacy Restrictions.
- Enter the Screen Time passcode if requested.
- Under Allow Changes To, tap Passcode & Face ID.
- Choose Don’t Allow.
See Apple’s parental-control instructions at https://support.apple.com/en-is/105121. Keep the Screen Time passcode different from the device passcode, and do not reveal it to the person whose changes you are restricting. Apple presents this as a child-safety control, not as a universal anti-tampering switch for every adult’s personal iPhone. Other Screen Time restrictions can also limit account changes, app installations, purchases, cellular settings, and privacy changes.
Close the old-passcode recovery window
After a passcode change on iOS 17 or later, Apple normally allows the previous passcode to be used once during a 72-hour period to regain access and reset a forgotten new code. If another person knows the old code, remove that recovery route after confirming that your new code works.
- Open Settings > Face ID & Passcode or Touch ID & Passcode.
- Tap Expire Previous Passcode Now.
- Confirm the action.
Apple documents this behavior at https://support.apple.com/en-us/119586. Expiring the old code does not stop someone who already knows the new code, so it belongs alongside Stolen Device Protection, not instead of it.

Choose a passcode the other person has never seen
Change the device code from a trusted location and avoid reusing an Apple Account password. Under Settings > Face ID & Passcode > Change Passcode > Passcode Options, Apple offers Custom Numeric Code and Custom Alphanumeric Code, which are harder to guess than simple short choices. Details on code types and passcode-required conditions are in Apple’s passcode guide.
Check that only authorized faces or fingerprints are enrolled. If you suspect someone added their biometric, remove the unfamiliar enrollment and change the passcode again. Do not let anyone watch you enter the code or see Apple Account verification codes.

- Set a short interval at Settings > Display & Brightness > Auto-Lock.
- Review Settings > Face ID & Passcode > Allow Access When Locked.
- Consider turning off lock-screen access to Control Center, USB Accessories, Siri, Reply with Message, and other features you do not need.
- Review lock-screen notification previews so private messages and codes are not visible.
- Lock especially sensitive apps where supported, including banking, mail, authentication, and password-manager apps.
These measures limit exposure; they do not replace Stolen Device Protection. Face ID and Touch ID also have normal security conditions in which iPhone requires the passcode, such as after a restart or several failed biometric attempts.

Secure the Apple Account as well
A person who knows the Apple Account password may be able to weaken account protections or interfere with recovery, depending on your setup. From another trusted device, change the Apple Account password, confirm two-factor authentication, and review trusted devices and trusted phone numbers. Do not reuse the iPhone passcode as the Apple Account password. Stolen Device Protection adds safeguards to several Apple Account operations, but it cannot repair an account whose credentials are already exposed.
If you think someone already changed settings
- From a trusted device, change the Apple Account password and review trusted devices and phone numbers.
- Check Face ID or Touch ID enrollment and remove anything unfamiliar.
- Change the iPhone passcode to a new, unique code.
- Tap Expire Previous Passcode Now.
- Enable Stolen Device Protection and set Require Security Delay to Always.
- Review lock-screen access, saved passwords, Apple Pay, Mail, Messages, and other sensitive data.
- If the iPhone is missing, use Find My from another trusted device or the web, mark it as lost, contact your carrier, and secure the Apple Account.
Troubleshoot missing or ineffective controls
Stolen Device Protection is not listed
Check that the iPhone is on iOS 17.3 or later, has a device passcode, and has Face ID or Touch ID configured. Find My and Apple Account two-factor authentication must also be enabled.
The security delay does not appear where expected
Location-based protection may treat a place as familiar. Open the Stolen Device Protection settings and choose Always if you need the delay regardless of location.

The Screen Time option is missing
Apple’s documented path is under the child’s name in the Family section of Screen Time. Verify that Content & Privacy Restrictions are enabled and that you are managing the intended child account.
You forgot the Screen Time passcode
Use Apple’s Screen Time passcode recovery process tied to the organizer’s Apple Account. If another person knows that Apple Account, secure the account first from a trusted device.
The phone was already stolen
You cannot turn on Stolen Device Protection after the loss. Immediately use Find My and Lost Mode, contact the carrier, change the Apple Account password, and report the theft when appropriate.
When the threat involves coercion
Technical controls cannot eliminate the danger of someone physically forcing an owner to unlock a phone. Stolen Device Protection may require biometrics for protected actions, but personal safety comes first. Use Emergency SOS where appropriate and contact law enforcement or a trusted person. Do not test biometric or emergency behavior during a dangerous confrontation.

Which method fits your situation?
| Situation | Best built-in control | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Personal iPhone or thief who knows the passcode | Stolen Device Protection set to Always | Adds biometric checks and, for certain changes, a one-hour delay; it is not an immutable lock. |
| Child’s supervised iPhone | Screen Time > Passcode & Face ID > Don’t Allow | Keep the separate Screen Time passcode secret; Apple documents this as parental control. |
| Company-owned iPhone | Mobile-device management (MDM) | Organizations can enforce passcode policies through a configuration profile; this is not normally available to personal users. See Apple’s passcode payload documentation. |
The Bottom Line
For a personal iPhone, enable Stolen Device Protection and set Require Security Delay to Always. For a child’s managed phone, add the Screen Time restriction and protect its separate passcode. Then change any exposed credentials and expire the previous device passcode.
