To reduce the risk of muscle strains in soccer training, use a thorough, repeatable warm-up, build hamstring strength progressively, and adjust training in coordination with your coach—especially if you have had a hamstring injury before. These steps can lower risk, but no routine can prevent every strain. The guidance and studies discussed here concern soccer (association football), not American football.
Which muscle strains should soccer players watch for?
Hamstring, quadriceps, and calf strains are common soccer muscle injuries. Sudden reaching and rapid changes in speed are examples of situations associated with strains; fatigue, preparation, and individual injury history also matter. Prevention should therefore combine preparation with sensible progression rather than rely on one stretch or drill.

How should you warm up before training?
The American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM) recommends a thorough warm-up of at least 10 minutes. Its soccer guidance, reviewed in September 2025, says to include movement and stretching. A practical progression is to raise activity gradually, then add controlled mobility, ball work, and faster football-specific movements.
- Start with easy movement: jog and move continuously for several minutes rather than beginning with sprints.
- Add controlled dynamic movements: use options such as walking lunges, hip swings, trunk rotations, and arm circles, keeping the range comfortable and controlled.
- Include mobility or stretching: attend to large muscle groups and areas that feel stiff. AOSSM suggests holding stretches for 30–60 seconds; stretching is one part of its warm-up guidance, not a proven stand-alone guarantee against strains.
- Build toward soccer pace: progress from short passes to longer passes, then add cutting and changes of direction at increasing speed, approaching game intensity only as you become ready.
AOSSM’s soccer injury guidance provides the warm-up recommendation and symptom advice.

- SHIN GUARDS WITH OPTIMIZED INSERT POCKET - NO MORE SLIPPING OUT: Did you have a situation where the shin guards slipped out during a game? This is a common problem with shin guards, but now we find a new solution. The included sleeves not only have a slide-in compartment for the shin guards to go into, but also have an extra "lid" on top so that help the shin guards stay in place and don't fall out the top.
- BREATHABLE MATERIAL: The thickly padded inside with the small elastic "cushions" against the impacts and guarantee optimal air permeability. The soccer shin guards also ensure sufficient air supply through the mesh fabric. The shin guards do not stick directly to the skin and sweat is better absorbed.
- RELIABLE QUALITY: The hard pad is thick and very durable. The molded left/right protective pad provides an ideal fit and contoured comfort. Thanks to the minimalist print and carbon texture on the surface, the shin guards look very elegant.
- FOR CHILDREN & ADULTS: This shin guard is comfortable to wear and provides the best possible protection during the game. The pad is available in 4 sizes and suitable for all soccer players.
- PURCHASE WITHOUT RISK - We attach great importance to the customer satisfaction and quality. If there is any problem with our soccer shin guards, please don’t hesitate to contact us. We will definitely find a solution!
Can a structured warm-up help prevent injuries?
FIFA 11+ is a structured neuromuscular warm-up for soccer, rather than a single muscle-specific exercise. Reviews report lower rates of injuries overall among players using the program, but the measured outcomes are broader than muscle strains alone, and results vary with the studies and their implementation.
- A 2020 umbrella review in Sports Medicine – Open reported 30–47% lower overall injury rates with 11+, 39–44% lower lower-limb injury rates, 55% lower overuse injury rates, and 52% lower knee injury rates. Those categories are not interchangeable with muscle-strain outcomes.
- A 2017 systematic review in BMC Sports Science, Medicine and Rehabilitation reported 30% lower overall injury risk among soccer players. Across the studies it summarized, 779 players in intervention groups (24%) and 1,219 in control groups (40%) had injuries; the authors noted clinical and methodological differences between studies.
These are review findings, not a promised reduction for an individual player or a head-to-head comparison with a targeted hamstring exercise. Use a structured routine consistently and with appropriate coaching, rather than treating its reported percentages as a personal forecast. The 2020 umbrella review and the 2017 systematic review describe their respective findings.

How can hamstring strength work reduce strain risk?
Eccentric hamstring strengthening—training the hamstrings while they lengthen under load—is a focused prevention option. The Nordic hamstring exercise (NHE) is one example. It is not a substitute for a complete warm-up, and its findings do not establish prevention benefits for calf or quadriceps strains.

The AOSSM’s 2026 review also describes eccentric hamstring strengthening as an important prevention measure. The umbrella review and AOSSM’s 2026 hamstring review discuss the evidence.

Introduce Nordic curls gradually and use a controlled range and pace. A partner can anchor your ankles; a dedicated bench or strap is optional, not an evidence-established requirement. If you are unsure how to perform the exercise safely, ask a qualified coach or health professional to show you.
How should coaches and players manage training progression?
There is no universal workload threshold in this evidence that guarantees strain prevention. Instead, avoid abrupt jumps in training demands and communicate about how a player is responding. The AOSSM’s 2026 review describes professional-club approaches that combine structured warm-ups, load management, and progressive loading, and identifies communication between medical and coaching staff as important.

- Tell the coach or medical staff about pain, unusual stiffness, or a recent injury before increasing the workload.
- When a player is returning from injury, coordinate progression with the health professional overseeing recovery.
What changes if you have had a hamstring strain before?
Prior hamstring injury is a major recurrence marker. AOSSM’s 2026 review calls it the single most important predictor of recurrence and summarizes prior studies estimating recurrence risk at two to six times that of an athlete without such a history. That range describes findings from cited studies; it is not a personalized prediction and may not apply equally across players or settings.

When should you stop training and seek an assessment?
Do not use prevention drills as treatment for an active injury or train through pain and loss of function. AOSSM lists pain during activity, ache at rest, stiffness, swelling, discoloration, loss of motion, favoring the sore area, and reduced strength or speed as possible musculoskeletal injury symptoms.
Arrange professional assessment when symptoms persist, or sooner if pain or impaired function makes continuing unsafe. For a strain, AOSSM describes a professional-guided progression involving strength, endurance, and flexibility exercises. Return to sport should happen only after a health professional clears you.
