Loafers have no laces to tighten, so heel security depends on the shoe’s shape matching your foot. If the shoe is only slightly loose, an adhesive heel grip may help temporarily; it will not correct a mismatch in length, width, or instep volume.
Why loafers slip at the heel
A loafer has no laces to pull the shoe snug around your foot. As G.H.BASS explains in its loafer fit guidance, “Because they don’t have laces, the fit relies on the shape of the shoe and your foot working together.” That makes the shoe’s overall fit especially important: a loafer can feel secure in one area yet still allow the heel to lift if another part does not suit your foot.

ECCO identifies three fit factors to consider together: shoe length, instep volume, and last width. The last is the form that determines much of the shoe’s shape and width. A loafer that is too long, too roomy across the instep, or too wide for your foot may not hold the heel securely.
The heel counter—the part of the shoe around the back and sides of the heel—also helps limit movement. South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust describes it as the part that “grasps the heel of the foot at the sides and back,” helping prevent it from sliding up and down while walking. If a heel counter softens or loses its shape, its support may decrease.

How to check whether the fit is the problem
Before adding anything to the shoe, work out whether the movement seems minor or whether the loafer’s shape is a poor match. Consider these three dimensions rather than assuming the shoe is simply too big:
- Length: Does the loafer seem too long for your foot? Do not size down automatically: any change still needs to leave suitable room for your toes.
- Instep volume: Is there excess room over the top of your foot, where the shoe should sit securely?
- Last width: Does the shoe feel too roomy across the foot because its width or overall shape does not suit you?
Assess the shoe as a whole. A heel that lifts can be a symptom of more than one dimension being off, and adding a pad may make a shoe feel tighter without making its underlying shape a better match.

Choose an adjustment based on the cause
| What you find | What to consider | What the adjustment can and cannot do |
|---|---|---|
| The loafer seems too long, too wide, or too roomy over the instep | Reassess whether the shoe’s size and shape suit your foot. | Fit is the main consideration. A heel grip is not a correction for a shoe that is the wrong size or shape. |
| The fit seems broadly right, but there is minor heel movement or rubbing | Consider an adhesive heel grip or heel liner. | It may offer a temporary adjustment or help with rubbing, but it is not guaranteed to stop slipping. |
| The back of the shoe appears softened or out of shape | Consider whether the heel counter is still providing support. | A grip may not restore support lost because the counter has changed shape. |
These are decision points, not a guarantee that a particular adjustment will work. Suitability depends on the shoe’s construction and the wearer’s foot.
How to try a heel grip cautiously
If the loafer otherwise seems like a reasonable fit and the remaining problem is slight movement or rubbing, an adhesive heel grip is an option to consider. Treat it as a temporary aid rather than a repair for a fit mismatch.

- Recheck fit first. Consider length, instep volume, and last width. If one of these appears substantially wrong, address the fit rather than relying on extra material at the heel.
- Choose a heel grip or liner intended for shoes. The available guidance supports heel grips as a possible aid for minor looseness or rubbing, but it does not establish compatibility with every loafer lining material.
- Follow the accessory’s own instructions. Placement and application details depend on the product. Do not assume that one installation method is right for every shoe or lining.
- Reassess comfort and movement. If the shoe feels uncomfortable or still does not hold your heel, the grip has not solved the problem. Do not keep adding bulk in an attempt to compensate for an unsuitable shape.
When a heel grip is unlikely to be the answer
- The shoe is clearly too long or too wide. A grip does not change the loafer’s underlying length or last shape.
- There is substantial excess room over the instep. The problem may involve the shoe’s volume or shape, not just the heel.
- The heel counter has softened or lost its shape. A pad should not be treated as a way to restore a counter’s support.
- The adjustment makes the shoe uncomfortable. A temporary accessory is not useful if it creates a poor fit elsewhere.
- You are considering sizing down. Check toe room and width as well; the heel symptom alone does not establish that a smaller size will fit.
Detailed guidance on matching particular adhesive products to particular loafer lining materials is not established here. If you are uncertain whether an accessory is suitable for your shoe, check its instructions or ask the maker or a shoe-fitting professional rather than assuming the adhesive is compatible.
A practical decision path
- Check the shoe’s length. If it appears too long, reconsider the size while preserving appropriate toe room.
- Check the instep and width. If the shoe is too roomy in either area, reassess whether its shape and last suit your foot.
- Inspect the heel counter. Consider whether it still holds its shape around the back and sides of your heel.
- Decide whether the remaining issue is minor. If the fit seems broadly right and only slight movement or rubbing remains, a heel grip may be worth trying as a temporary adjustment.
- Stop if comfort gets worse or movement remains. A grip is not a universal fix; return to the fit question instead of repeatedly adding material.
What to keep in mind
There is no universal amount of heel movement that establishes whether a loafer fits correctly, and the available guidance does not support promising that a heel grip will stop all slipping. The useful distinction is whether the shoe’s length, instep volume, and last width suit your foot, or whether a small residual problem might respond to a temporary heel liner. This is general footwear-fit guidance, not an individualized podiatric assessment.
