To make clips play as one continuous presentation, join them into a single video file with FFmpeg and upload that file to YouTube. FFmpeg cannot control the transition timing between separate YouTube playlist entries; YouTube autoplay may continue to another video, but it does not guarantee a gapless transition.
Choose between one continuous video and separate playlist entries
If the clips can be presented as one video, concatenate them before uploading. This gives YouTube one upload to play rather than asking its player to transition between separate videos.

If each clip needs its own YouTube page or playlist identity, keep them separate and use YouTube’s playlist and autoplay controls. Those controls affect what plays next, not the precise delay at a transition.

| Approach | Best when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg concat demuxer with stream copy | The clips have compatible streams, codecs, and time bases, and you want to avoid re-encoding. | Fast and avoids another encode, but incompatible stream properties or duration mismatches can cause failure, gaps, or artifacts. |
| FFmpeg concat filter with re-encoding | The clips need common settings, scaling, frame-rate conversion, or other filtering. | More flexible, but decoding and encoding takes longer and can affect quality. |
| Separate YouTube playlist entries | Each clip should remain an individual upload. | Autoplay can continue playback, but YouTube does not promise zero-delay transitions between playlist items. |
Join compatible clips without re-encoding
Use FFmpeg’s concat demuxer when the input files have the same streams, codecs, and time bases. Stream copy avoids decoding and encoding, so it is fast and does not introduce another generation of encoding loss. It is not suitable for every collection of clips.

1. Create an ffconcat file
In a text file named files.ffconcat, list the clips in playback order:
ffconcat version 1.0
file 'clip-01.mp4'
file 'clip-02.mp4'
file 'clip-03.mp4'
Keep the list file and clips in the same directory for this example, or use the appropriate paths in the file lines.

- From Sandisk, a brand professional photographers trust to take on assignments.
2. Run the concat command
ffmpeg -f concat -safe 0 -i files.ffconcat -c copy combined.mp4
This asks FFmpeg to read the inputs in order and copy their streams into combined.mp4 without re-encoding. The command is a template, not a guarantee for arbitrary files. The -safe 0 option permits paths that the concat demuxer would otherwise treat as unsafe; use trusted file paths in the list.

Play the output and inspect both picture and sound around each cut. The concat demuxer adjusts timestamps so the first file begins at zero and later files follow the preceding file. FFmpeg cautions that this adjustment is global and can create gaps when streams do not have exactly the same length. Inaccurate stored durations can also cause artifacts. Where a file’s duration metadata is inaccurate, an appropriate duration directive in the ffconcat list can override it; verify the result rather than assuming the override fixes every mismatch.

- Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity
Normalize clips with the concat filter
If the clips differ in properties or need scaling, frame-rate conversion, or another filter, use the concat filter and re-encode. Filters require decoded frames, so they cannot be applied while stream-copying. The exact filter chain and output settings depend on the source files and the result you want; inspect input streams first and choose common output parameters that suit the intended YouTube upload.
Re-encoding is slower than stream copy and can affect quality. Keep the original files, check the combined output at every join, and adjust the filter or encoding settings if you find audio or video discontinuities.

What YouTube autoplay and playlist looping can—and cannot—do
YouTube says, “When Autoplay is on, another related video will automatically play after a video ends.” Autoplay settings can vary by device, and YouTube documents circumstances that can stop playback, including inactivity limits on some connections and user actions. It is a playback control, not a setting for removing a precise gap.
YouTube also provides a playlist loop control to repeat a playlist. Looping changes what plays again; YouTube’s help documentation does not promise zero-delay transitions between playlist items. If a gapless continuous presentation is essential, joining the clips into one file is the more direct approach.

Troubleshoot gaps or artifacts in the combined file
- The stream-copy command fails: Check whether the clips have matching streams, codecs, and time bases. If they do not, normalize them with a filter and re-encode instead.
- There is a pause, jump, or artifact at a join: Inspect the audio and video lengths and the files’ duration metadata. Unequal stream lengths or inaccurate duration information can affect the demuxer’s timestamp adjustment. Correct the duration information where appropriate, rebuild the file, and check the join again.
- You need to scale, convert frame rates, or apply other filters: Use the concat filter with re-encoding. Stream copy cannot apply filters.
- Separate playlist videos still have a gap: Autoplay may continue to another video, but it does not guarantee a precise or gapless handoff. Use one combined upload when uninterrupted playback matters more than separate video pages.
- Playback stops before the next item: Check autoplay on the device being used and whether a documented stop condition, such as an inactivity limit or a user action, applies.
