To keep lectures playing continuously, use one encoder session with a loop-enabled playlist. In OBS Studio, add the files to a VLC Video source, turn on Loop Playlist, and send the encoder output to YouTube using the stream URL and stream key. This prevents the playlist from simply ending when it reaches its last file; it does not guarantee frame-perfect transitions or protect against an encoder, network, or YouTube delivery interruption. Test the actual files and monitor the stream before relying on it.
Why gaps happen—and what looping can fix
There are two separate jobs in a continuous broadcast: the playback source must keep producing video, and the encoder must keep sending that video to YouTube. A playlist loop addresses the first job by restarting the list after it reaches the end. The encoder connection and stream key address the second. Setting a loop does not itself keep a computer, encoder, or internet connection running.

A loop setting is not a promise of seamless cuts. OBS documents playlist playback and looping, but does not guarantee gap-free transitions for arbitrary files. Differences in codecs, frame rates, audio tracks, file loading, or the way clips begin and end can still produce a pause or an abrupt change. Test the exact files in their intended order and inspect the outgoing stream.

Set up a looping lecture playlist in OBS
- Install VLC before adding the source. OBS’s VLC Video source depends on VLC. The OBS guide specifies 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS. See OBS Media Sources.
- Add the playlist source. In OBS, add a VLC Video source to the scene that will be sent to YouTube. Add the lecture files in the order you want them to play. The VLC Video source is distinct from a single-file Media Source; OBS documents playlist controls for the former.
- Enable the loop. In the VLC Video source’s properties, enable Loop Playlist. Confirm that the source plays through the final file and starts again at the beginning.
- Check picture and sound across boundaries. Play the list locally in OBS and watch the transitions, including the last-to-first transition. Confirm every file is readable, the intended audio is present, and no source is muted. Do not assume that a file that plays on its own will transition cleanly in the whole list.
- Connect OBS to the YouTube live stream. In YouTube Live Control Room, configure the stream and copy its server URL and stream key into the encoder’s streaming settings. YouTube describes the stream key as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Keep it private. Follow YouTube’s current live stream settings and encoder setup instructions.
- Preview before making the stream public. Start the encoder and check the preview in Live Control Room before going live. Verify the picture and audio on the channel or watch page and on a mobile device, as YouTube recommends. Use a private or unlisted test if you need to inspect behavior without a public broadcast.
Keep one ongoing encoder feed through lecture boundaries instead of ending and recreating the YouTube live event for each file. This is an operational way to avoid introducing a stop-and-restart between lectures; it is not a YouTube guarantee about transition behavior.

Prepare for encoder and network interruptions
A continuous playlist cannot prevent a broken stream if the encoder stops or loses its connection. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend preparing the encoder in advance, previewing the feed, monitoring audio and video, and testing failover. For an event workflow, YouTube recommends setting up encoders at least two hours ahead and starting them at least 15 minutes before the event; these are preparation recommendations, not guarantees of uninterrupted service.

- Allow upload headroom. YouTube recommends 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. Its guidance also says capacity should account for the primary feed, backup feed, and headroom when both feeds need bandwidth. Treat this as YouTube’s recommendation, not a universal guarantee; validate the actual connection.
- Test the backup path. If you use a backup encoder, test the failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable, then confirm that the player rolls over to the backup. A configured backup that has not been tested is not a verified recovery path.
- Monitor the audience-facing stream. Check the Live Control Room preview, then verify access from channel and watch pages and on mobile. Monitor sound and picture during the broadcast, not just the playlist counter in OBS.
Keep a separate recording of the lectures
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. For a 24/7 broadcast, do not rely on YouTube’s archive as the only copy. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive and checking that archive files are present and intact. An external SSD is one possible storage location, not a YouTube requirement; size it according to the recording bitrate and how long you need to retain footage. See YouTube’s archive guidance.

Troubleshoot gaps and interruptions
