Preventing blisters starts with a boot-and-sock combination that holds your foot securely without pinching. Break new boots in on short outings, keep feet as dry as conditions allow, and stop to protect any spot that begins to rub. Liner socks, tape and thicker socks may help in some cases, but none can compensate for a poor fit—and extra sock bulk must not make boots tight.
Why winter hiking boots cause blisters
Blisters develop when repeated friction or pressure stresses the skin. Pressure, heat and moisture can all contribute; wet skin and wet footwear may be especially prone to painful rubbing, according to REI’s blister-prevention guidance. In winter, thicker socks can add warmth but also crowd the boot. Snow, slush and perspiration make moisture management important, while constriction can create pressure and impair circulation. The goal is not simply to add insulation: your whole boot-and-sock setup needs to stay comfortable as you walk.

How to prevent blisters before a winter hike
Fit boots with the socks you plan to wear
Try boots with the exact sock layers intended for the hike. Aim for a secure hold without pinching or persistent heel movement. Walk around and, if possible, test an incline: your foot should not slide forward into the toe box. If adding a liner or thicker sock makes the boot tight, change the sock combination or choose a roomier boot rather than accepting constriction. REI cautions that thick socks should not make boots too tight or cut off circulation (cold-weather hiking tips).

Break new boots in gradually
Wear a new pair on short walks and shorter hikes before taking it on a demanding winter outing. Increase the time gradually and notice whether the same area keeps rubbing. A lacing adjustment may improve how the boot holds your foot, but repeated pinching or sliding is a sign to reassess the fit—not something to assume will disappear with more miles. See REI’s hiking-injury prevention guidance and NOLS’ advice on keeping feet comfortable on the trail.
#1 Best Overall
- Hiking Insoles for Men and Women: The arch is medium and cushioned, not stiff. They are soft enough for comfort over ten miles, but firm enough to keep your foot steady on rocks and roots. You will really notice the difference on long downhills
- Up to 56% Shock Absorption: When you carry a full pack, every step can feel heavier. Our shock layer takes in up to 56% of impact before it reaches your knees and lower back, so you stay comfortable all day
- Up to 47% Energy Return: The arch returns up to 47% of the energy you put into each step, rather than just absorbing it. It also helps take pressure off your knees when you walk downhill. By the end of a long day, your legs will feel the difference
- Dry Feet on Tough Climbs: A breathable cover and non-sweat layer pull heat and moisture away from your skin, keeping your boots drier on steep climbs and in warm weather. Wet feet cause blisters, and this helps prevent them
- Sized for Men and Women who Hike: Use the size chart to find your fit. Place your boots' insoles on top and trim around the front for an exact fit. These insoles are light enough for trail runners and tough enough for backpacking boots
Choose socks for moisture control and room
When sweat management matters, choose moisture-wicking hiking socks rather than cotton. A thin liner worn under a hiking sock is an option described by both REI and NOLS; it is not necessary for everyone. Test the complete combination in the boots: keep it only if it helps with rubbing or moisture without making the fit tight or uncomfortable.
Manage wet feet and wet conditions
In wet or snowy conditions, gaiters may help keep snow and water out of footwear. On a longer outing, carrying dry replacement socks gives you the option to change if your socks get wet. At breaks, check places that usually rub and respond as soon as you notice warmth or friction.

Keep feet and boots free of irritants
Trim toenails, keep socks and feet clean, and shake rocks, sand and dirt out of your boots before hiking. Small debris can irritate skin over time, as noted in REI’s hiking-injury guidance.
What to do when you feel a hot spot
Stop and check the area rather than waiting for it to become a blister. Paper medical tape, moleskin or a padded blister dressing can protect a high-risk spot or an area that has just started rubbing. If the same place keeps getting irritated, adjust the lacing or reconsider the fit; a covering alone will not fix the cause. Keep protective material available so you can respond during the hike.

- 𝗖𝗨𝗦𝗛𝗜𝗢𝗡𝗘𝗗 𝗪𝗔𝗥𝗠𝗧𝗛 & 𝗔𝗣𝗣𝗥𝗢𝗫. 𝟭𝟳 𝗠𝗠 𝗣𝗥𝗢𝗙𝗜𝗟𝗘 – The multi-layer design provides soft, warming cushioning underfoot. As a reference, overall thickness is about 17 mm when the wool is fully lofted. Because natural wool can vary slightly in pile height and density, small differences in thickness are normal. The fuller profile requires enough room inside the shoe.
- 𝟯-𝗟𝗔𝗬𝗘𝗥 𝗖𝗢𝗡𝗦𝗧𝗥𝗨𝗖𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡 – Wool fleece, genuine sheepskin leather and a wool felt base form the three-layer structure of the insole. A stitched edge holds the layers securely together and helps maintain the overall construction. Because the edge is stitched, do not trim the insoles.
- 𝗡𝗔𝗧𝗨𝗥𝗔𝗟 𝗪𝗢𝗢𝗟 𝗖𝗢𝗠𝗙𝗢𝗥𝗧 & 𝗖𝗔𝗥𝗘 – Natural wool can absorb moisture and help support a comfortable in-shoe climate. Packaging and transit can compress the fleece, so it may look flatter at first. After unpacking, air the insoles briefly and gently shake or fluff the wool to help restore its natural loft. If damp, allow them to air-dry naturally.
- 𝗙𝗢𝗥 𝗙𝗢𝗢𝗧𝗪𝗘𝗔𝗥 𝗪𝗜𝗧𝗛 𝗘𝗡𝗢𝗨𝗚𝗛 𝗥𝗢𝗢𝗠 – Suitable for winter boots, snow boots, work boots and slippers with enough interior space. If your footwear already fits snugly, check the available room before ordering to make sure it can accommodate a fuller insole. Each pack contains 1 pair.
If a blister forms
Protect the blister and avoid removing its roof: the American Academy of Dermatology explains that the roof protects the raw skin beneath while it heals. Keep the area clean, and seek professional care if you notice signs of infection or other concerning symptoms. See the American Academy of Dermatology’s blister guidance.

A 2014 Wilderness Medical Society guideline update reports that 64% of hikers in a cited Appalachian Trail study had foot blisters. That figure describes the hikers in that reported study; it is not a winter-hiking-specific estimate and should not be generalized to all hikers. The guideline is available from the Wilderness Medical Society.
