Prevent silence by checking the whole path from radio source to YouTube playback: verify the source audio, confirm FFmpeg reads and maps it, keep the network stable, and inspect YouTube’s stream health. FFmpeg’s HTTP reconnect options can help reopen a radio feed used as an input; they do not, by themselves, guarantee that FFmpeg will reconnect its outgoing stream to YouTube.
Trace the silence to the layer that failed
A running FFmpeg process is not proof that listeners can hear anything. The failure may be at the radio source, FFmpeg’s input or audio mapping, the network, or YouTube ingest. Diagnose in that order and verify the result at the YouTube player.

- Source continuity: Is the radio feed playing and producing audio?
- FFmpeg input and output: Is FFmpeg reading the feed, mapping its audio, and continuing to encode and publish?
- Network: Is the uplink stable and large enough for the configured stream?
- YouTube ingest: Is the encoder publishing to the current server URL and stream key, and does Live Control Room report healthy playback?
Diagnose and prevent silence step by step

Confirm the radio source itself
Open or otherwise monitor the exact radio URL used by FFmpeg and confirm it is currently audible. Check again during the times when silence occurs: a feed may start correctly and fail later. Test with audio and movement representative of the intended broadcast, rather than relying only on a short idle test. YouTube recommends realistic preflight testing and ongoing monitoring of audio and video quality (YouTube Help: Streaming tips).

Check FFmpeg’s input, mapping, and output
Read FFmpeg’s logs from startup through the period when the stream goes silent. Look for input read failures, end-of-file (EOF), stream mapping, and encoder or muxer errors. Confirm that the audio stream from the radio input is mapped into the outgoing program; a video feed or running process alone does not establish that audio is being sent. Check whether FFmpeg continues producing output after the source fails.

If the radio feed is read over HTTP, FFmpeg documents input-side options including
reconnect,reconnect_at_eof,reconnect_on_network_error, andreconnect_streamed. These control reconnection behavior for the HTTP connection used to read the input. They are not a universal fix for a failed publishing connection to YouTube. Option support and defaults can differ by FFmpeg version, so check the documentation or help for the build you will run before relying on a flag (FFmpeg HTTP protocol documentation). -
Decide whether silence needs a fallback
If your broadcast must retain an audio track when the radio source fails, design a deliberate fallback—such as a prepared low-level audio bed or silence source—and test how it is mixed and mapped with your installed FFmpeg version. A fallback can preserve an output track; it does not repair the radio feed or restore its content. There is no universal filtergraph established here that safely handles every input and FFmpeg build. Check upload capacity and connection stability
YouTube recommends leaving about 20% upload bandwidth headroom for the stream and warns that a connectivity disruption can break it (YouTube Help: Streaming tips). Choose a bitrate the available uplink can sustain, with room for ordinary network variation. If diagnostics point to unstable Wi-Fi, testing with wired Ethernet is a reasonable troubleshooting step; it will not fix a too-small uplink, a dead source, an FFmpeg failure, or YouTube ingest trouble.

Verify the YouTube endpoint and stream health
In YouTube Live Control Room, confirm that FFmpeg is using the current stream server URL and stream key. The key associates the encoder feed with the intended YouTube stream. Check the preview and stream-health messages rather than assuming that an FFmpeg process that appears active is reaching YouTube correctly. YouTube recommends RTMPS when the encoder supports it. If a third-party encoder fails at startup, YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance includes copying the current stream key and updating the encoder (YouTube Help: Streaming tips; YouTube Help: Fix streaming issues).

Keep encoding settings within YouTube’s guidance
Use a supported publishing protocol and audio/video configuration. YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS; supported video codecs include H.264, H.265, and AV1, and supported audio codecs include AAC and MP3. Its encoder guidance specifies constant bitrate (CBR) and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Set bitrate for the actual resolution and frame rate as well as the uplink you have; do not copy a value without checking that it fits your stream (YouTube Help: Streaming tips; YouTube Help: encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions).

Test recovery end to end
Monitor FFmpeg logs, YouTube stream-health messages, and actual playback. If possible, test the recovery path under controlled conditions before relying on it in a long broadcast. A successful test means audio is audible in the YouTube player after the fault and recovery—not merely that FFmpeg remains running. YouTube recommends monitoring stream quality and checking encoder failover (YouTube Help: Streaming tips).

Plan long sessions around YouTube’s archive behavior
YouTube says encoder streams under 12 hours are automatically archived (YouTube Help: Archive live streams). Do not assume one encoder session is an indefinitely reliable 24/7 broadcast. Plan and test session transitions using the current Live Control Room behavior for your channel.
