To keep a Windows PC awake during a YouTube Live stream, set the sleep timeout for the power state you will use—On battery or When plugged in—to last longer than the stream, or choose Never if appropriate. Screen-off is a separate setting: the display can turn off while the PC stays awake. These Windows steps are the same for Indian PCs; labels and available options can vary by Windows version, hardware and manufacturer.
Keep a Windows 11 PC awake during a stream
- Open Start > Settings > System > Power & battery.
- Expand Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts.
- Under the column matching your power source, set Make my device sleep after to a duration longer than the planned stream. If you intentionally want no automatic sleep while using that power source, choose Never, if offered.
- Set Turn my screen off after separately only if you need the display to stay lit. Turning the screen off does not necessarily put the PC to sleep.
If you stream sometimes on battery and sometimes plugged in, set the sleep timeout for each condition you expect to use. A timeout configured only for plugged-in use will not cover a stream started on battery. A long or Never timeout can use more power, so restore your normal setting afterward if you do not need it.

Windows 10 steps and support status
On Windows 10, open Start > Settings > System > Power & sleep, then adjust the sleep timing for the relevant battery or plugged-in state. The wording and available choices can differ by device. Microsoft says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; this does not mean that PCs instantly stop working, but supported security updates and assistance have ended.

Check laptop lid behavior
A laptop may sleep when its lid closes, regardless of the sleep timeout you set. If you need to close the lid during a stream, review the lid action first:

- Open Control Panel > System and Security > Power Options.
- Select Choose what closing the lid does.
- Review When I close the lid, especially the Plugged in choice, and select an action that suits your setup if available.
Options depend on the PC. Do not close the lid assuming the stream will continue unless you have checked the action and considered whether you need an external display.
Use PowerToys Awake for a temporary override
Microsoft PowerToys Awake can keep the computer awake temporarily or indefinitely without changing the normal power plan. It is useful when you want a session-specific setting rather than a persistent timeout change. Enable Awake in PowerToys and choose the duration you need, or use its standalone executable as documented by Microsoft.

- Awake requires an enabled, signed-in session; it does not work at the lock screen.
- In its default behavior, the display may still turn off. That does not necessarily mean the computer has slept.
- Awake does not block a manual sleep or hibernate action.

- The stream stops when you unplug the laptop. Check the On battery sleep timeout; the plugged-in value is separate.
- The screen goes dark but the stream continues. The screen-off timer and sleep timer are separate. Change the screen timeout only if you need the display visible.
- The PC sleeps after you close the lid. Review Control Panel > System and Security > Power Options > Choose what closing the lid does for the active power condition.
- Awake is enabled, but the PC sleeps at the lock screen or after a manual sleep command. Awake requires a signed-in session and does not override user-initiated sleep or hibernate.
- You expect YouTube playback to prevent sleep. Do not rely on browser playback alone: official guidance does not guarantee that YouTube Live keeps every Windows device awake. Configure Windows explicitly, and check the actual behavior of your PC and browser.
Microsoft’s video playback settings concern apps using the built-in Windows video platform; they are not established as a way to prevent sleep during YouTube in a browser. YouTube’s desktop sleep timer pauses a video after a selected interval—it is not a Windows sleep-prevention setting.
