To prevent clipping, lower gain at the microphone or source until the loudest sounds have headroom, check the signal through OBS, then place OBS’s Limiter last in the relevant filter chain as a final peak safeguard. Record and listen to representative ASMR material, and test the actual YouTube stream before relying on it for a continuous broadcast. A limiter cannot repair distortion that has already occurred earlier in the audio chain.
What clipping is—and where it can start
Digital audio has a hard ceiling: 0 dBFS is the maximum level. When the signal exceeds that ceiling, the result can sound harsh or distorted. In a live setup, the audio travels from the microphone or playback source through any preamp, interface or mixer, then into OBS and on to YouTube. Overload at an early stage can remain distorted even if the OBS meter later looks safe.

OBS advises checking audio both at its source and again in OBS. Its technical guide also gives -9 dBFS as a “Permitted Maximum Level” reference. Treat that as a conservative meter and headroom reference—not a required ASMR loudness target or a YouTube rule. OBS Audio Mixer Technical Details and the OBS Audio Mixer Guide explain the relevant metering and monitoring concepts.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteSet gain using the sounds your stream actually contains
- Trace the signal path. Identify the microphone or playback source, any hardware gain controls, the interface or mixer, and the OBS source or bus that feeds the stream.
- Make representative sounds. Check the loudest material you expect to use—such as close-mic breaths, whispers, taps, brushing or crinkles—as well as quieter passages. Do not set gain using silence or a single quiet trigger.
- Adjust gain at the source first. If the microphone, preamp or interface is overloading, reduce its gain there. Listen at the source or interface if monitoring is available, then check the signal in OBS.
- Watch OBS peaks during the loudest material. Keep routine peaks below 0 dBFS and leave margin for sudden transients or multiple sources playing together. The meter helps identify peaks; it cannot undo distortion introduced before the signal reaches OBS.
- Check the OBS mix. Review the relevant source and output meters while the full scene is active, including other sounds that may be summed with the ASMR audio. Lower source gain or the OBS fader if peaks are too close to the ceiling, while confirming that quieter sounds remain audible.
There is no single established ideal integrated loudness target for ASMR on YouTube Live. The practical goal here is clean audio with room for unexpected peaks, not maximizing loudness.

Put OBS’s Limiter last in the filter chain
The Limiter is a final safeguard: it keeps the signal reaching it from exceeding its threshold. In OBS, open the audio source’s filters and place the Limiter after the other filters on that source. If the audio is protected by a bus or another shared signal path, put it last in that chain instead. OBS explicitly recommends that the Limiter be the last filter in the chain. OBS Limiter Filter
OBS documents a default threshold of -6.00 dB and a default release of 60 ms. These are starting defaults, not settings proven ideal for every ASMR sound. Test the actual material and listen for pumping, dulled transients or other artifacts; change settings if the limiter is audibly affecting the program. A limiter cannot restore clean sound if a microphone, preamp or earlier stage has already clipped.

Record, listen back and test YouTube ingest
- Record a normal session in OBS. Include the loudest and softest triggers, scene changes and any other audio that will run during the broadcast.
- Listen to the recording. Check the source and the final mix for crackling, harsh peaks, pumping, unexpectedly quiet sections and changes in tone. OBS recommends recording a normal session and listening to the file before going live. OBS Audio Mixer Guide
- Run a YouTube test with the planned setup. Use audio and video movement similar to the intended stream, then monitor YouTube’s stream health and any messages. YouTube’s encoder guidance says tests should include audio and movement similar to what will be used in the stream. YouTube live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions
- Check the live output periodically. Recheck after changing a source, gain setting, scene, filter, interface or software. No cited platform guidance sets a particular monitoring interval or guarantees uninterrupted 24/7 operation.
Keep encoding settings separate from clipping controls
YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists AAC or MP3 audio, 44.1 kHz for stereo, and constant-bitrate encoding. These are delivery settings; choosing a codec, sample rate or bitrate does not prevent an overloaded microphone or repair clipped audio. Keep gain staging and peak control under control independently of encoder compatibility. YouTube live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions
Common clipping symptoms and fixes
| What you notice | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Harsh or crackling sound even though the OBS meter is not peaking | Distortion may have occurred at the microphone, preamp, interface or another stage before OBS. | Reduce gain at the earliest overloaded stage and listen there again before checking the OBS mix. |
| OBS peaks reach 0 dBFS during taps, crinkles or close breaths | Source gain or the combined mix has too little headroom for transients. | Lower source gain or the relevant OBS level, then retest the loudest representative sounds. |
| The sound becomes dull or pumps on loud triggers | The limiter may be affecting too much of the signal or reacting audibly. | Revisit source gain first; then listen to limiter behavior and adjust its settings if needed. |
| The OBS recording sounds clean, but the live stream does not | The ingest path or live configuration may differ from the recording setup. | Test YouTube with the same audio and stream configuration, and check stream health and messages during the test. |
| Audio is distorted after changing a mic, interface, scene or filter | The change may have altered gain staging or the filter order. | Trace and listen through the full signal path again, confirm the limiter is last, and make a fresh recording before relying on the stream. |
Does YouTube fix or normalize clipped live audio?
The cited YouTube guidance covers encoder settings and stream health; it does not establish that YouTube will normalize every live stream or repair clipped input. Prevent overload before the audio reaches the encoder rather than depending on a platform-side correction.

Can a limiter remove clipping that happened in the microphone or interface?
No. It can limit peaks that reach it, but it cannot restore audio already distorted earlier in the signal path.
