For a typical stereo podcast sent to YouTube Live over RTMP or RTMPS, set audio to AAC or MP3, 44.1 kHz sample rate, and 128 Kbps. Use CBR for the stream, a two-second keyframe interval, and test the complete audio path before going live. Those are YouTube’s live-ingestion recommendations; they cannot repair a noisy recording, clipped mix, or incorrect routing.
Recommended YouTube Live audio settings for a stereo podcast
For an encoder-based RTMP/RTMPS stream, use YouTube’s recommended stereo settings below. These are settings for the incoming live stream, not rules for exporting a prerecorded podcast video.

Protect the source mix before encoding
Encoding settings govern how the signal is sent to YouTube; they do not make a poor source sound clean. Check the actual signal entering the encoder, not just the settings displayed in its audio panel.

- Confirm the intended microphone or mixer feed is selected and routed to the stream.
- Listen for clipping, dropouts, unintended background audio, or a missing channel in a stereo test.
- Use the same microphones, playback sources, and production routing planned for the show during rehearsal.
- If you need to connect a microphone or mixer to a computer-based encoder, external audio hardware can be part of the setup. YouTube documents encoder use with external audio and video hardware, but does not require an interface or claim that buying one improves sound by itself. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
YouTube’s cited live guidance does not set podcast loudness targets, peak ceilings, EQ or compression values, limiter settings, or a preferred interface model. Do not treat a made-up number in any of those areas as a YouTube requirement.
Keep live-stream settings separate from upload settings
A prerecorded file uploaded to YouTube follows a different encoding path from an incoming live stream. YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings list AAC-LC, Opus, or Eclipsa Audio at 48 kHz and recommend 384 Kbps for stereo uploads. Those upload figures do not replace the live encoder recommendation of 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps for stereo.

Use the live settings for an encoder sending a live broadcast. Use upload guidance when preparing a prerecorded file for upload; do not combine the two checklists just because both end up on YouTube.

For a standard podcast with no HLS-specific requirement, follow the compatible workflow your encoder already uses rather than switching protocols in expectation of better audio. YouTube does not say that one protocol improves an otherwise identical podcast mix.

- PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
- WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
- TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
- SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
| Workflow | Audio guidance | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| RTMP/RTMPS | AAC or MP3; 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps recommended for stereo | RTMPS is the recommended secure transport option. This is the usual live encoder guidance for a standard stereo podcast. |
| HLS | AAC, AC3, or EAC3; 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps recommended for stereo | HLS has additional requirements, including transport-stream segments and a rolling playlist. YouTube says it has higher latency than RTMP because it sends video in segments. See YouTube’s HLS setup guidance. |
Choose based on your encoder’s compatibility, any protocol-specific delivery requirement, and acceptable latency—not an assumed audio-quality advantage.
Stereo versus 5.1: use the channel layout you actually produce
A conventional podcast mix is generally stereo. Do not select surround settings unless the program is produced and routed as multichannel audio and your encoder workflow supports it.

For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube says 5.1 is supported only with AAC. Its live recommendations distinguish 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps for stereo from 48 kHz and 384 Kbps for 5.1. Do not apply the 5.1 figures to a stereo podcast.
Rehearse and monitor the live stream
- Configure the encoder. Set the protocol, codec, sample rate, audio bitrate, CBR mode, and keyframe interval for the intended live workflow.
- Run a representative test. Include speaking, recorded clips, music or other production elements that will be present in the real show. YouTube advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
- Listen to the received stream. Check that speech is clear, both stereo channels are present as intended, and other audio sources are neither missing nor unexpectedly loud.
- Watch stream health and messages during the broadcast. If the sound changes or YouTube reports a stream issue, check the incoming encoder feed and settings rather than assuming YouTube will repair the source.
YouTube automatically transcodes an incoming live stream into output formats for viewers on different devices and networks. That helps make the stream available in different playback formats; it does not fix an imperfect recording or mix.

Common audio problems and what to check
- The stream is silent: verify the encoder’s selected audio input and routing, then confirm that the source is producing a signal.
- Only one side of the stereo stream has audio: inspect the source and encoder channel mapping, then test both channels in a rehearsal.
- The voice sounds distorted: listen to the signal before it reaches the encoder and check for clipping or distortion in the source chain. Changing the live bitrate alone cannot undo distortion already in the mix.
- Audio is missing from clips or other production sources: confirm those sources are included in the encoder’s audio routing and include them in a representative test.
- You are unsure whether a mismatch is live or upload-related: identify whether you are sending an encoder stream or uploading a finished file, then use the recommendations for that workflow.
- HLS introduces too much delay for the show: account for HLS’s higher latency relative to RTMP and use a compatible workflow appropriate to the broadcast’s needs.
