Buffering between podcast episodes is not, by itself, proof that YouTube has a defect at episode boundaries. The pause may come from the stream’s latency setting, an unstable connection, an encoder or ingest problem, or one viewer’s device or network. First find out whether one person or many are affected, then match the pause to YouTube’s stream-health messages before changing settings.
First identify who is buffering
Ask viewers whether the pause affects only them, everyone on one shared network, or people on different networks. That pattern helps locate the problem, but does not prove its cause.

- One viewer: Have that person try another internet connection or device and change playback quality. If other viewers are unaffected, investigate the viewer’s network, app, device, or playback route before changing the stream.
- Several viewers on the same network: Their shared connection may not have enough available capacity or may be unstable. Ask whether other users or devices are using that network heavily.
- Viewers on separate networks: Check the outgoing stream, encoder, and YouTube Live Control Room diagnostics.
YouTube notes that congestion and other factors can interrupt a stream even when the connection can sustain its average bitrate. A good speed-test result therefore does not rule out brief interruptions. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend allowing 20% headroom above the total stream bitrate and accounting for other people sharing the connection.

Check latency before changing encoding settings
Latency is the delay between the live action and what viewers see. YouTube says a lower-latency stream has less read-ahead buffer in the player, which can make playback buffering more likely. Its live stream settings guidance describes Normal latency as the highest-quality choice with the lowest viewer buffering when interaction is not needed.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
- For a podcast that does not depend on near-real-time audience interaction, try Normal latency.
- Use Low or Ultra-low latency only when the interaction benefit matters. YouTube describes most viewers on Low latency as experiencing less than 10 seconds of latency, and most on Ultra-low as experiencing less than five seconds; these are latency descriptions, not guarantees against buffering.
Change one setting at a time and check whether the pauses improve. Otherwise, several simultaneous changes make it harder to identify the cause.
Match the pause to YouTube’s stream-health messages
Open the stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and inspect stream health and its timestamps. Compare a reported buffering time with the messages shown at that moment. YouTube’s live streaming error messages include a warning that keyframes are not being sent frequently enough, which can cause buffering.

- Powerful Dual-Core 900MHz Processor – Handles multiple data streams simultaneously for reliable performance across your devices. Ensures smooth streaming, online gaming, and video conferencing without buffering or lag.
- Note the time a viewer reports the pause.
- In Live Control Room, look for stream-health warnings at that time rather than relying on the general symptom.
- Record the message and check the encoder output and logs for a matching issue.
- If there is no matching warning, continue checking the encoder and network; absence of a visible message does not by itself establish that the stream is healthy.
Inspect the encoder and outgoing connection
Check the encoder’s preview, software status, CPU load, and error messages. YouTube recommends examining encoder output, testing outbound connection strength, and reviewing timestamped Live Control Room errors. If the encoder appears to be sending clean output, verify the available upload bandwidth—not just download speed—and leave headroom above the combined stream bitrate.

- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
| Resolution and frame rate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
These are YouTube recommendations for H.264, not a universal setting for every codec or stream. Compare the bitrate for your actual resolution, frame rate, and codec with the upload capacity available to the encoder. YouTube recommends 20% additional room above the stream’s total bitrate; sharing the connection can reduce the capacity available to the stream.
Test the full podcast setup before going live
Run a representative test with audio and movement similar to the actual broadcast, and monitor stream health. A static screen or a short test under light network use may not expose a problem that appears during the real show. YouTube’s streaming tips also recommend checking the preview and verifying backup-encoder failover. If you test failover, follow YouTube’s guidance for the setup rather than disconnecting equipment during a live show without a recovery plan.

Common patterns and what to try
| What you observe | What to investigate | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Only one viewer reports buffering | That viewer’s connection, device, app, or selected playback quality | Try another network or device and adjust playback quality. |
| Several affected viewers share a network | Available capacity or instability on that network | Check network use and test the connection relevant to those viewers. |
| Reports come from viewers on separate networks | Encoder output, stream health, and the creator’s outbound upload path | Match timestamps to Live Control Room errors; inspect encoder status, CPU load, and upload capacity. |
| Buffering is more likely after selecting a lower-latency mode | Reduced read-ahead buffer | If interaction does not require low latency, test Normal latency. |
| Live Control Room reports keyframes are not frequent enough | Encoder keyframe output | Review the encoder’s keyframe configuration and output against YouTube’s current guidance. |

Does buffering between episodes mean YouTube has a special episode-boundary problem?
Not necessarily. The timing alone does not identify the cause; use viewer reports and timestamped stream-health diagnostics to narrow it down.
