A local save or platform cloud copy may protect eligible save files, but it cannot independently retrieve character data, inventory, account progress, or worlds stored only on the publisher’s servers. Start with the game’s official shutdown notice, then identify where each type of progress lives and follow the title’s specific export, sync, or backup instructions.
What can—and cannot—be preserved
Games may store progress on your device, synchronize eligible saves through a platform or game cloud service, or keep some data on publisher servers. A single game can use several of these approaches at once. A save file, inventory, account state, and hosted world may each have different storage and transfer rules.

Before you act, identify the exact game and edition, platform, account or profile, and mode you play. Check the official support page and shutdown announcement for that combination. Neither a platform backup nor a downloaded file should be assumed to include data that remains on the publisher’s servers.
What to do before access ends

Read the official shutdown notice
Find the shutdown date and any separate deadline for exporting or migrating data. Look for the supported destination and the precise items included. The notice may describe a save download, world snapshot, account transfer, account linking, cross-progression, or offline-play option; do not assume any of these is offered unless the publisher says so. Map each kind of progress to its storage location
Use the game’s and platform’s official documentation to determine whether saves are local, cloud-synchronized, or server-held—and which account owns them. If cloud saves are supported, check that the latest session has synchronized before switching devices, deleting the app, or removing a profile. Netflix Help Center explains that games on its service can save “either through cloud saves or locally on your device”; the behavior depends on the game. Use account linking only when the game recommends it
For example, Electronic Arts says SimCity BuildIt saves progress to the device and recommends linking a supported account service to recover a city after reinstalling. EA also advises saving on the original device before trying another one. That is guidance for SimCity BuildIt, not a general transfer method for other games. Copy accessible local files without replacing the original
If the game and platform let you access its save files, keep the original and make a separate, dated copy. An external SSD or hard drive can provide another destination for files you can actually access, but extra storage cannot capture data held only on a publisher’s server. Check the contents and date of any publisher export
Treat an export as a game-specific archive, not necessarily a complete or current copy. Check its snapshot date, included data, format, download window, and restoration instructions. PixARK’s publisher, Snail Games, offered retired-server files for download beginning August 25 (Beijing Time, UTC+8), including an August 3 snapshot and an August 24 final snapshot. It warned that some buildings were missing from the later snapshot after player transfers and dismantling, and said the files could be used in local single-player or a privately hosted server. The announcement’s September 24, 2026 (Beijing Time) download deadline has passed. This example does not establish that other games provide exports. [PixARK publisher announcement]

Keep the only copy safe
Do not test an import or restore procedure on your sole copy. Preserve originals, check filenames and dates, and follow the publisher’s stated steps. Choose a preservation route by what it saves
When the game offers multiple options, compare what each one includes, who controls it, whether it remains usable after shutdown, any deadline or account requirement, and how it can be restored. A live account transfer is different from a dated snapshot; neither should be treated as a complete copy unless the publisher identifies its contents.

Why a backup may not contain your online progress
A device or platform copy covers only data that is included in that copy. It cannot by itself export publisher-server data, and shutdown can make server-held content unavailable if the publisher has not provided another route.
KONAMI’s Save Data guidance illustrates why the exact account matters: it says a server may not have received all game progress depending on when a connection drops. It also says that its server-stored save data remains when the same PlayStation Network or Xbox Live ID is used, while a different ID yields different server-stored data. These statements describe KONAMI’s supported behavior and should not be applied to unrelated games. [KONAMI Save Data]
