Claiming a free PS4 game attaches its license to the PlayStation account that redeemed it. Other users can play some eligible games on that account’s primary PS4, but console sharing does not give them a separate claim. Whether access continues depends on what kind of offer the game came from—such as a PlayStation Plus Monthly Game, a catalog title, a limited promotion, or a free-to-play game.
What a free-game claim gives you
The account that completes the redemption is the account associated with that claim. A different local user on the same PS4 does not become the claimant, and cannot carry that claim as their own entitlement to another console.

“Free game” can describe different offers with different access conditions. A PlayStation Plus Monthly Game, a game available through a Plus catalog, a temporary promotion, and a free-to-play title should not be assumed to have the same license or ongoing availability. For a Plus game, check the membership and access conditions for that specific benefit rather than treating the claim as an outright purchase.

PlayStation allows each account to activate one PS4 as its primary console. On that console, other users can access supported PlayStation Store purchases and selected PlayStation Plus benefits. See PlayStation’s primary PS4 activation guide for the account setting and access rules.

For eligible Plus benefits, PlayStation’s current sharing guide includes downloaded Monthly Plus games, online multiplayer, games bought with a Plus discount, and catalog titles where the subscription plan allows access. Sharing is not the same as redeeming: PlayStation specifically lists “Redeeming PlayStation Plus games on another account” as a benefit that cannot be shared. Other non-shareable benefits include online storage and automatic patch downloads.
In practice, a second user may be able to launch an eligible downloaded game on the subscriber’s primary PS4, but the claim remains tied to the account that redeemed it. The second user does not receive a separate license for use on a different console.

How the account and console affect access
| Situation | What to expect |
|---|---|
| The claiming account uses its activated primary PS4 | Other users on that console can access supported purchases and selected Plus benefits, subject to the game’s entitlement rules. |
| A different local account uses the primary PS4 | It may play an eligible shared game, but it does not own the original claim or gain a separate redemption. |
| The owner uses a different PS4 | Access can depend on the owner signing into that console; another local account should not assume it can use the owner’s license there. |
| The game is a Plus benefit | Access depends on the applicable Plus benefit rules, including active membership and whether the game remains available under those rules. |
PlayStation’s older PS4 FAQ, published October 30, 2013, describes the core distinction between access on a primary console and access on another PS4 where the owner must be signed in. For current activation limits and Plus benefit categories, use PlayStation’s current support pages linked above.
Why a claimed game may show a padlock or disappear
A lock does not necessarily mean the claim is gone. Work through these checks in order, especially if another account is trying to play:

- Sign into the account that claimed or purchased the game. Confirm the game appears for that account and check its transaction history for a completed purchase or redeemed voucher. PlayStation’s game-launch troubleshooting guide recommends verifying the account and transaction.
- Identify the offer type. If the game came through PlayStation Plus, confirm the membership is active and that the game is still available under the applicable Plus rules. PlayStation’s Plus support page explains subscription benefits; the launch troubleshooting guide also directs players to check membership and availability.
- Check primary PS4 activation. If a different account owns the game, make sure the owner’s account has this console activated as its primary PS4. The path is Settings > Account Management > Activate as Your Primary PlayStation 4.
- Restore licenses. On PS4, go to Settings > Account Management > Restore Licenses, then select Restore. PlayStation says restoring licenses may help with padlocks, missing games or add-ons, and crashes, and that it does not affect data. See PlayStation’s license restoration instructions.
- Check service status and system software. If the game remains locked, PlayStation’s launch troubleshooting guide also recommends checking service status and ensuring the system software is current; contact PlayStation Support if the issue persists.
Does claiming a free PS4 game mean you own it forever?
Not necessarily. The claim is associated with the redeeming account, but the phrase “free game” alone does not establish a permanent, unrestricted license. In particular, PlayStation advises players troubleshooting a Plus game to confirm both an active subscription and that the game remains available. For a specific title, check its offer category, the account’s transaction history, and the current terms attached to that offer.
