For a CloudConvert HTML-to-PDF conversion that should use a page’s screen stylesheet, start with the capture-website operation, set output_format to pdf, and use css_media_type set to screen. That selects screen media; CloudConvert’s documentation does not say it guarantees CSS background colors or images will appear. Check the live options for your selected operation and engine, then test backgrounds in a small conversion before relying on them.
Set up the CloudConvert conversion
CloudConvert supports HTML-to-PDF conversion from either a URL or supplied HTML. For URL capture, its product documentation also describes custom authorization headers for protected pages. The documented website-capture operation is capture-website; its example job uses a task with output_format set to pdf.

This is the appropriate starting point when the page’s screen stylesheet is desired, but it is not a documented switch that forces backgrounds into the PDF. Check CloudConvert’s current operation options or Job Builder for the selected engine rather than adding an assumed parameter.

Verify background colors and images separately
A background color and a CSS background image can fail for different reasons. Validate both using a minimal page with a conspicuous background color on one element and a distinct background image on another. Convert it using the same operation, engine and relevant settings as the production job, then inspect the resulting PDF.
- Make a small test page with one element using
background-colorand another usingbackground-image. - Convert the test page with
capture-website, PDF output andcss_media_typeset toscreen. - Check the PDF for each background independently. If one is missing, confirm the stylesheet and asset URL are available to the conversion process and that the page has finished loading.
- Repeat the test after any change to the operation’s engine or options that could affect rendering.
CloudConvert describes its HTML-to-PDF API as using headless Chrome, and its website-to-PDF tool as Chrome-based with output resembling browser Print to PDF. That context makes media selection and the browser’s print pathway relevant, but does not establish that every background will render for every page or configuration.

Check the live operation options
CloudConvert’s API reference explains how to list operations and retrieve their available options and engine versions; options are associated with conversion types. Use that reference or the Job Builder to see what is currently accepted for the operation and engine you plan to use. The reviewed capture example documents a PDF task and header/footer settings, but does not establish a print_background option, its default, or a payload that guarantees backgrounds. Do not assume that parameter is supported.

- Screen or print stylesheet: Confirm that the conversion uses the intended media type. The documented example value is
screen; choosing it does not itself guarantee background output. - Asset access: For a missing background image, check whether the conversion process can reach the image URL. A relative CSS asset path may resolve differently from the page’s original environment.
- Dynamic content: If the page renders its background or content after JavaScript runs, make sure it exists before capture. CloudConvert says its headless Chrome browser can wait for a custom CSS selector.
- Color versus image: Test the color and image independently to distinguish a CSS media or rendering issue from an image-loading problem.
- Page layout: CloudConvert documents page size, margins and zoom as configurable HTML-to-PDF capabilities. These affect layout; header and footer templates are separate from the page’s CSS backgrounds.
Wait for dynamic content when needed
For pages whose relevant content appears asynchronously, use CloudConvert’s documented selector-wait capability so capture can wait for a chosen CSS selector. Choose a selector that only appears once the content needed for the PDF is present; a wait cannot help if that element never appears or the page cannot load its required resources.
