Before downloading a large PC game, check the game’s current requirements, choose its install drive, and confirm that drive has enough free space for the launcher’s download and installation process. Then review Windows cleanup suggestions, make sure the launcher is ready, and plan for a download time that depends on your connection and the game’s size.
1. Check the game’s requirements and choose an install drive
Check the game’s current store listing or publisher documentation for its storage requirements. Then check where the launcher will install it: the relevant figure is free space on that destination drive, not the combined capacity of all drives in the PC.

In Steam, library folders can be managed across multiple hard drives, and an installed game can be moved to another supported library. Other launchers may offer different location controls, so confirm the selected folder in the launcher you plan to use. Steam: Steam Library Folders
2. How much space do you need?
Use the game’s current requirements and the launcher’s information rather than a universal free-space rule. The advertised download size is not necessarily all the space needed: installation and updates can involve local copying or publisher-specific update packages. There is no general multiplier that reliably covers every game and launcher.

Keep Windows update figures separate from game-installation needs. Microsoft says typical Windows feature updates need 6–11 GB or more, and quality updates need 2–3 GB or more; those figures describe Windows updates, not PC games. 3. Review Windows storage cleanup recommendations
To see Windows’ built-in storage suggestions, open Settings > System > Storage. Review Storage Sense and Cleanup recommendations before choosing what to remove. Microsoft recommends these tools for freeing space, but you should delete only items you recognize and no longer need. Back up important files before moving or removing them. Avoid deleting unfamiliar folders or game files just to meet a target. If cleanup suggestions do not free enough space, consider another drive only if the launcher supports installing to it.

Let the launcher apply any required update
Open the launcher before starting the game download and let it install an update if it requests one. Epic’s preload troubleshooting guidance specifically advises checking for and installing a launcher update when prompted. There is no need to assume that every game download requires a driver update; follow the game or hardware maker’s guidance if you are addressing a compatibility or performance problem. Allow for an approximate download time
Download duration depends on the game’s size, effective connection speed, network settings, and conditions affecting the launcher or delivery service. Steam also provides download settings such as bandwidth limits, which may affect how quickly a download completes. Treat any time estimate as approximate rather than a guarantee. 5. Decide whether another drive makes sense
If the intended drive is short on space, compare the available capacity at the chosen destination, launcher support for that location, and whether you want a temporary or permanent library location.

6. Start the download and troubleshoot if needed
Once the destination has enough space and the launcher is ready, start the download. You do not need to verify files after every successful installation. If Steam reports missing content or the game crashes, Steam’s Verify integrity of game files option can help check and repair installed files.
