Brush twice a day for two minutes with fluoride toothpaste. Place the bristles at the gumline, guide the powered head slowly over the outside, inside, and chewing surfaces of every tooth, and let the brush do the work instead of scrubbing. Follow your model’s instructions, since powered brush heads do not all work the same way.
Use this two-minute routine
- Prepare the brush. Apply fluoride toothpaste. To limit splatter, put the head in your mouth before switching the brush on.
- Start at the gumline. Position the bristles where each tooth meets the gums. The American Dental Association (ADA) gives a general angle of about 45 degrees to the gumline; follow your brush maker’s directions for the powered head.
- Clean every surface in a consistent order. Work around the mouth, covering the outside, inside, and chewing surface of each tooth, including the back teeth. For the inner surfaces of the front teeth, the ADA’s general guidance is to tilt the brush vertically and make several up-and-down strokes. Use the technique recommended for your particular powered brush.
- Move slowly and gently. Let the powered head do the brushing; do not press hard or scrub back and forth as you might with a manual brush. A Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust leaflet advises holding the head at the tooth-and-gum margin for 3–5 seconds before moving to the next area. That is the leaflet’s technique, not a universal timing rule for every brush.
- Give the whole mouth two minutes. Divide the mouth into four sections and spend about 30 seconds on each. The ADA also describes this as roughly four seconds per tooth. A built-in timer or quadrant alert can help you keep an even pace.
- Spit, rather than rinse. The Royal Devon leaflet advises spitting out excess toothpaste and not rinsing afterward. Follow your dental professional’s advice if you have been given different instructions.
The ADA recommends brushing twice daily for two minutes with a soft-bristled toothbrush. Its guidance applies to both manual and powered brushes: either can be used effectively.

How to cover the mouth without missing areas
Choose a route you can repeat—such as upper outside, lower outside, lower inside, upper inside, then chewing surfaces—and follow it every time. The precise route matters less than covering all surfaces rather than repeatedly brushing the easiest front teeth. Pause at each tooth or small group of teeth, then advance methodically.
Spend particular attention on the gumline and the back teeth, where it can be easy to rush or lose contact with the brush head. If your brush has a timer that signals every 30 seconds, use each interval to move to another quarter of your mouth.

Why two minutes and fluoride toothpaste matter
The ADA’s home-care overview says the duration evidence relies on plaque indices as surrogate measures. Systematic reviews it discusses found that brushing for two minutes was associated with greater plaque reduction than brushing for one minute; that evidence does not guarantee a particular clinical outcome for an individual.
Fluoride toothpaste is part of the routine because the ADA summarizes evidence for over-the-counter fluoride toothpaste in caries control. Toothpaste amounts and concentrations for children depend on age, so do not assume the adult amount is right for every child; use age-appropriate guidance from a dental professional.

Choose and use a brush that fits you
An electric toothbrush is an option, not a requirement for good oral hygiene. If you prefer one, practical considerations include whether its timer helps you brush for the full two minutes, whether its head fits comfortably in your mouth, and whether compatible replacement heads are readily available. Follow the manufacturer’s directions for the brush’s head movement and settings; the cited guidance does not establish one movement type or mode as best for everyone.

The ADA says its Seal of Acceptance reflects an objective review of scientific evidence related to safety and efficacy in plaque removal and reduction of gingivitis, and that ANSI/ADA standards are used to test powered-toothbrush safety. Check the current ADA Seal listing when assessing a product rather than relying on an old label or an unverified claim.

When to get personalized instructions
General brushing advice may not fit every mouth or dental situation. Ask your dentist or hygienist to show you how to brush if you have braces, implants, gum disease, pain, limited dexterity, or a clinician-directed routine. Their instructions and the brush maker’s guidance should take precedence over a general technique.
Brushing does not clean between teeth. The ADA also discusses options such as floss, interdental brushes, oral irrigators, and woodsticks; evidence strength varies by device. Ask a dental professional which approach suits your teeth and gums.
