Apple recommends using Software Update for compatible upgrades. Once installation starts, keep your Mac awake and leave a laptop’s lid open until it finishes.
1. Back up your Mac before upgrading
Apple recommends backing up your files before installing any macOS upgrade. Time Machine is built into macOS and can back up your Mac to an external storage device or a supported network destination. An external drive is a common option, but buying one is not a prerequisite if you already have a suitable backup destination. Apple’s macOS 27 upgrade instructions and Time Machine instructions explain the setup.

Choose and size a Time Machine destination
For a directly connected drive, check that its connector works with your Mac; Apple lists USB-C and Thunderbolt among common connection options. Apple’s ideal sizing guideline is a backup device with at least twice the storage capacity of the Mac. For example, for a Mac with 1 TB of storage, that guideline points to a 2 TB backup disk. This is backup-disk capacity guidance, not the amount of free internal storage needed to install macOS.

Time Machine can also use supported network destinations, including another Mac and NAS devices that support Time Machine over SMB. Older AFP-based network arrangements may have compatibility limitations with macOS 27, so check Apple’s current notes if you rely on one. During setup, macOS may ask to erase the selected disk. Confirm that you have selected the intended disk and checked its contents before allowing that.

See Apple’s Time Machine backup guide and its list of supported backup disks for details.
2. Confirm that your Mac is compatible and check storage
Check the exact model against the target release
Compatibility depends on both the Mac model and the macOS version. Use Apple’s compatibility list for the release you plan to install. The macOS 27 upgrade page describes compatibility with Apple silicon Macs, including M-series and A-series chips; check the list for your exact computer rather than assuming every Mac can upgrade. Apple’s macOS 27 page provides its current compatibility information.

Software Update filters for compatible software. If the upgrade does not appear there, it may not be available for that Mac; confirm the model against Apple’s list before deciding that something has gone wrong.
Check available internal storage without relying on a generic threshold
Review your Mac’s available storage before you begin, but do not assume there is one universal free-space figure for every Mac or release. Apple’s reviewed instructions do not state a single required amount of free internal storage for macOS 27. Requirements can depend on the device and release, so follow the current installer’s prompt and Apple’s guidance for your model. Apple also says Software Update may use less storage to download and install macOS than other installation methods. Apple’s download and installation guidance describes the available methods.

3. Check work-critical apps and save your work
Before starting, save open work and close apps as a practical precaution. If you need a particular third-party app, driver, or work tool immediately after upgrading, check its developer’s current support information for the target macOS. Apple’s general upgrade instructions do not establish compatibility for individual third-party apps.
4. Start the upgrade through Software Update
Apple recommends Software Update as the easiest way to find and install available compatible updates. Open it by searching for “Software Update” in Spotlight, or follow this path:

For most people, Software Update is the straightforward route. macOS Recovery can reinstall macOS when Software Update fails or when a Mac cannot start up fully. A bootable installer is more specialized; it can help install macOS on multiple computers without downloading the installer each time, or in situations where other methods cannot be used. Apple describes these options in its macOS download and installation guide.

5. Keep the Mac undisturbed while installation finishes
Keep the Mac from going to sleep during installation. If it is a laptop, do not close the lid until installation is complete. Apple notes that the Mac may restart and show progress bars or blank screens several times; those can be normal parts of the process. Apple’s macOS update instructions cover what to expect.
