Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

For an iPhone, Apple’s wireless-update path requires a backup, power, and Wi-Fi; for a Mac, use a Time Machine backup stored somewhere other than its internal disk. There is no universal battery percentage, free-space requirement, or installation duration that applies to every update, so follow the prompts for your device.
How do I prepare my iPhone before an iOS update?
1. Make a backup and check when it finished
Apple says iCloud Backup saves device information and settings that do not regularly sync to iCloud. It is not the same as simply syncing selected data. To start a backup manually, open Settings > [your name] > iCloud > iCloud Backup, then tap Back Up Now. Stay connected to Wi-Fi until it completes, then check the displayed date and time of the last backup. iCloud Backup can also run automatically when the iPhone is connected to power and Wi-Fi and locked. Apple’s iCloud backup instructions explain the process.

If iCloud storage is insufficient, follow the options shown on the device or make a local backup to a computer. For a local backup on a Mac, connect the iPhone, open Finder, select the device, and use the backup controls in the General tab. If you need Health and Activity data included, select Encrypt local backup and keep the password somewhere safe: Apple warns that the encrypted backup cannot be recovered without it. Confirm the backup’s date and time before proceeding. Apple’s computer-backup instructions cover Finder and iTunes.

| Route | Useful when | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| iCloud Backup | You have a reliable Wi-Fi connection and enough iCloud storage. | Wait for the backup to finish and verify its last-backup time in Settings. |
| Local computer backup | You prefer a copy on a computer or iCloud storage is insufficient. | For Health and Activity data, encrypt the backup and retain its password. Verify the completion date and time. |
3. Connect to power and Wi-Fi, then check for the update
Connect the iPhone to power and Wi-Fi. Open Settings > General > Software Update to see whether an update is available, then follow the on-screen instructions. Apple says some updates are not offered wirelessly; a VPN or proxy connection can also prevent the device from contacting update servers. Apple Support describes keeping software current as “one of the most important things you can do to maintain your Apple product’s security.” Apple’s iPhone and iPad update guidance has the current steps.

4. Respond to storage prompts instead of guessing
An update may need more available storage. If the iPhone offers to remove apps temporarily, Apple says those apps will be reinstalled after the update. Otherwise, cancel the installation and remove content manually, then check Software Update again. The required space depends on the update and device; use the amount, if any, shown in your own update prompt rather than relying on a general threshold. Apple’s update guidance describes these options.
5. If wireless updating does not work, use a computer
Back up first, then connect the iPhone to a trusted Mac. In Finder, select the iPhone, open General, choose Check for Update, and select Download and Update if an update is available. Finder is the documented route on macOS Catalina 10.15 or later; on macOS Mojave or earlier, use iTunes. If the Mac is connected to the internet through the iPhone’s Personal Hotspot, connect the Mac to a different Wi-Fi or Ethernet network instead. Apple’s computer-update steps explain the wired route.

What should I do before updating my Mac?
1. Back up to a separate destination
Set up Time Machine with a destination other than the Mac’s internal disk, such as an external hard disk or a network disk. Start or check a backup and confirm it has completed before beginning the upgrade. Time Machine backs up user files, but not macOS system files or apps installed as part of macOS installation. Apple’s guidance does not set a universal capacity recommendation for a backup destination. Apple’s Time Machine backup instructions explain how to choose a destination.
An external hard drive or SSD is one optional destination; a network disk is another. Choose one you can use consistently and that is separate from the Mac’s internal storage.

2. Confirm that the Mac supports the macOS version
Check Apple’s compatibility list for the macOS version you intend to install, or look in System Settings > General > Software Update (on older macOS versions, open System Preferences > Software Update). Apple says Software Update shows only versions compatible with that Mac. Do not infer support from the Mac’s age alone, because compatibility depends on the specific model and release. Apple’s macOS compatibility list identifies supported models.
3. Use Software Update for the usual installation route
When the intended version appears in Software Update, follow its instructions to download and install it. Apple describes this as the fastest and easiest method and says it may use less storage than other installation methods. Terminal, Recovery, and bootable installers serve more specific needs and are not necessary preparation steps for most users. Apple’s macOS download and installation guidance describes the available routes.
4. Leave the Mac available to restart and finish
Downloading and preparing the update are followed by installation, which can involve a restart. Keep the Mac available and connected to power while it completes, and do not plan around a fixed duration: installation time varies, and Apple does not specify one universal completion time. Apple’s macOS installation guidance describes the process without promising a standard number of minutes.
