Before updating iOS, check that your iPhone supports the release, make and verify a backup, connect to Wi-Fi and power, and check available storage. Apple recommends backing up before an update; its usual manual route is Settings > General > Software Update.

What should you do before updating your iPhone?

  1. Check compatibility. Find your iPhone model and compare it with Apple’s current compatibility list for the release you plan to install. Apple’s iOS 26 guide lists supported devices from the iPhone 11 family and iPhone SE (2nd generation and later) through the iPhone 17 family and iPhone Air; support varies by release, so check the current list rather than relying on an older one. Apple’s iOS 26 guide and compatibility list
  2. Make a backup and confirm it completed. For an iCloud backup, connect to Wi-Fi, open Settings > [your name] > iCloud > iCloud Backup, then tap Back Up Now. Stay connected until it finishes; the screen shows the date and time of the most recent backup. Apple says automatic iCloud backups require the feature to be enabled, the iPhone connected to power and Wi-Fi, and its screen locked. Apple’s iCloud backup instructions
  3. Check device storage. Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage to see available space. If you need more, Apple suggests enabling Offload Unused Apps or deleting apps manually. During an update, the iPhone may temporarily remove app data that can be downloaded again; Apple says this does not affect personal information. Apple’s update troubleshooting steps
  4. Arrange a reliable connection and power. Use Wi-Fi and connect the iPhone to a power source. Keep it connected to power while installation is in progress. If the download is slow, Apple recommends using Wi-Fi and avoiding other downloads at the same time. Apple’s update instructions and troubleshooting

Choose a backup method

iCloud is convenient if you have enough iCloud storage and a Wi-Fi connection. If an iCloud backup cannot complete because storage is insufficient, Apple offers on-screen steps to buy more; that is one option, not a requirement for updating. You can instead back up to a computer. Apple’s computer instructions require a trusted computer and a connection to the iPhone. iCloud backup guidance · Computer backup and update guidance

Update on the iPhone

Open Settings > General > Software Update. If an update is available, tap Download and Install and follow the prompts. Automatic installation may take place overnight when the iPhone is charging and connected to Wi-Fi; Apple says it notifies you before installation. Apple’s iOS 26 guide · Apple’s iPhone User Guide

Update with a computer

If wireless updating is unavailable or keeps failing, Apple supports updating through a computer. Back up first and connect the iPhone to a trusted computer. Apple’s instructions use Finder on macOS Catalina or later, and iTunes on macOS Mojave or earlier or Windows. If the computer is using the iPhone’s Personal Hotspot, connect the computer to another Wi-Fi or Ethernet network instead. Apple’s computer-update instructions
