Apple also supports updating through a computer if the wireless route does not work. The steps below follow Apple’s guidance available on October 4, 2026; compatibility depends on the release and your exact iPhone model.
1. Check whether your iPhone supports the update
Look up your exact iPhone model on Apple’s iOS 26 compatibility page for the target release. Apple’s page says iPhone 11 and later, including iPhone SE (2nd generation and later), support iOS 26, and notes that your iPhone shows only updates compatible with it. Treat the list as release-specific: check Apple’s live compatibility information for the version you plan to install, rather than assuming eligibility carries over to future releases.

2. Back up your iPhone and confirm it finished
Apple Support advises: “Before you update, back up your device to keep a copy of your important information.” You can back up with iCloud or a computer. Follow Apple’s iPhone backup instructions, then check that the backup completed before starting the update. A backup reduces the risk of losing information if something goes wrong; it does not guarantee that every update will be trouble-free.

Check the next backup’s estimated size and the storage available in your iCloud account. Apple’s iCloud backup guidance describes reducing the backup or upgrading to iCloud+ as options. If you prefer not to use iCloud, you can make a computer backup instead.

3. Check how much iPhone storage is available
On the iPhone, open Settings > General > iPhone Storage. iOS needs enough free device storage to download and install the update. Apple does not give one universal free-space number in its update guidance, so the amount you need can vary; check the available space and the update prompt on your device.
If space is tight, Apple suggests enabling Offload Unused Apps or deleting apps. Offloading can temporarily remove an app while retaining data that can be downloaded again, but you may still need to redownload an app or take other action. See Apple’s iPhone storage recommendations.

4. Get power and Wi-Fi ready
For an over-the-air update, use a reliable Wi-Fi connection and connect the iPhone to power. Apple’s wireless update steps begin with backing up, then connecting to power and Wi-Fi. Download time depends partly on the update’s size and your connection speed. If it is slow, avoid starting other large downloads at the same time.

5. Choose how to install the update
Update wirelessly on the iPhone
- Connect the iPhone to power and Wi-Fi.
- Open Settings > General > Software Update.
- Follow the on-screen prompts to download and install an available update.
Update using a computer
If wireless updating is unavailable or keeps failing, Apple also supports connecting the iPhone to a computer with a cable. On a newer Mac, check for the update in Finder; in older computer environments, use iTunes. Follow Apple’s computer update instructions. The cable must connect your particular iPhone and computer; there is no single connector recommendation that fits every setup.

6. What if the update won’t install?
Read the message on screen before retrying. Apple identifies incompatibility, insufficient storage, slow downloads, trouble reaching update servers, and an incomplete installation among possible causes. Use the symptom to choose the next step instead of repeatedly starting the same download.
- The update is not offered: Check the target release’s compatibility list against your iPhone model.
- There is not enough storage: Review Settings > General > iPhone Storage, then free space using Apple’s storage suggestions.
- The download is slow or cannot connect: Check Wi-Fi, avoid competing large downloads, and try again when the connection is reliable.
- The update download appears incomplete or corrupted: Apple says deleting the downloaded update and downloading it again may help when appropriate. Follow its update troubleshooting steps.
- Wireless installation continues to fail: Try Apple’s computer update method.
- The iPhone appears frozen or shows a recovery screen: Use Apple’s specific recovery guidance rather than improvising.
If a computer reports a USB connection error, Apple recommends the supplied cable or another Apple-certified cable for certain errors. This is relevant only to a cable-based update or connection problem; most people updating over Wi-Fi do not need to buy one. See Apple’s update error guidance.

Wireless or computer update: which should you use?

Apple supports both routes; its guidance does not establish that one is universally safer or faster. For backups, choose iCloud if you have enough account storage and prefer a wireless copy, or a computer if you want to back up locally or iCloud space is insufficient.
