Before a fiber installation, arrange access for the technician, get permission for any drilling if you rent, and choose a practical spot for the indoor equipment. The technician will confirm the cable route and placement with you before work begins; the exact process, timing and equipment depend on your provider, network and property.
Before the appointment: prepare access and consent
- Check the appointment details. Read your provider’s instructions and contact it about access problems, unusual property constraints or a date change. For Openreach-based service, the service provider manages order details and appointment changes.
- Have an adult available. Openreach asks for someone over 18 to be present throughout the appointment. The technician may need access inside and, depending on the route, outside.
- If you rent, get approval first. Openreach says renters need landlord permission for drilling inside or outside. The Australian nbn guide also advises renters to get landlord permission before the appointment is confirmed. Ask about approval for the specific proposed cable route and any holes or other work; do not assume a tenant can authorize alterations alone.
- Clear access where practical. Make the likely indoor equipment area and relevant outside wall or route accessible. The technician needs to assess the route, and outside access may be necessary.
- Ask about anything that could change the visit. Check with your provider whether external work, utility access, a service interruption or a follow-up visit is expected. Openreach notes that some outside work may happen before the appointment and complex jobs can require another visit.
Choose a sensible equipment location
Pick a preferred indoor location in advance, then discuss it with the technician. Consider both a nearby power outlet and where you want Wi-Fi to work. The cable route and property layout may limit placement, so a preferred spot is not a guarantee.

For Openreach installations, the guidance is to think about a position near a double power socket and suitable for Wi-Fi coverage. Its checklist specifically warns against a dark cupboard under the stairs. The nbn FTTP guide gives a different, network-specific recommendation: place the nbn connection box within three metres of an existing power point where feasible. That measurement is not a universal fiber-installation rule.
What the technician may install
A common pattern is for fiber to reach the property by an overhead cable from a pole or by an underground route. In Openreach’s description, it then reaches a small outside junction box, with a smaller cable passing through the wall to an indoor Optical Network Terminal (ONT). The technician discusses the potential route with you and agrees where a hole is needed before drilling. Openreach says a permission-to-work form may be requested when digging or drilling is required.

Equipment names and arrangements differ. Openreach describes an indoor ONT, while Google Fiber’s guide describes an outside Network Interface Unit (NIU) for professional installations at homes new to GFiber. Brightspeed also describes technician-installed fiber equipment and an ONT, with help setting up Wi-Fi router equipment. These are provider examples, not interchangeable instructions; follow the equipment and process specified for your service.
Understand how the ONT connects to your router
In an Openreach setup, the ONT is a separate, powered device—not the router or a traditional modem. An Ethernet cable runs from the ONT’s Ethernet/LAN port to the router’s WAN or internet port. Check with your provider what equipment and cables it supplies. A separate Ethernet cable may be useful if one is not supplied or if your router will sit farther from the ONT, but the installation guidance does not establish that Cat6 is mandatory or that customers must buy a cable.

Plan for the time and possible interruption
Openreach estimates that most installations take one to four hours, depending on the property and cable route. This is an estimate for its installations, not a guaranteed duration; extra work or a complex route may take longer.

For its FTTP installation context, nbn advises customers to allow for a possible 30–60 minute power and/or service disruption. That is specific to nbn guidance, not a general promise about other providers. Ask your provider what to expect at your address.

Questions to ask your provider or technician
- Does my appointment require outside access, and is any external work planned beforehand?
- Where is the likely cable route, and where would the indoor equipment be placed?
- Will drilling or digging be needed, and what landlord or other property-owner permission must I obtain?
- What equipment and connection cables will be supplied, and what router connection will I need?
- Should I expect a service or power interruption, and could this property require a follow-up visit?
