Start by launching Halo: The Master Chief Collection (MCC) with Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC) disabled; Halo Support says mods will not work with EAC enabled. If that does not solve the problem, check that the mod is for Halo 3, follow its specific launch instructions, verify any manual-install folder, and confirm it supports your current MCC build. If the game remains unstable, restore or verify the original game files. No single step diagnoses every mod crash.
1. Confirm the mod is for Halo 3 and the right game mode
On the mod’s Workshop page, check its target title and whether it is intended for Campaign, Multiplayer, or Firefight. A mod may be designed to appear in a particular menu or mission rather than as a general option in the game. Follow the creator’s setup and launch directions before trying other fixes. Halo Support’s MCC mod installation instructions cover the Workshop route and direct players to the mod’s own details.

2. Launch MCC with Easy Anti-Cheat disabled
Halo Support states, “mods will not work unless Easy Anti-Cheat is disabled.” The launch option depends on where you installed MCC:
- Steam: Choose “Play Halo: MCC Anti-Cheat Disabled (Mods and Limited Services)” when prompted.
- Microsoft Store or Xbox app: Search Windows for the anti-cheat-disabled MCC shortcut and launch it.
EAC-disabled mode allows modded Custom Games and Campaign play, but disables public matchmaking. To play public matchmaking, exit MCC and relaunch it in the normal EAC-enabled mode. See Halo Support’s mod instructions and its EAC guidance.

3. Check the install path if you added files manually
If you installed the mod by copying files rather than subscribing through Workshop, confirm that you followed the creator’s exact file instructions and used the Halo 3 folder—not the folder for another MCC title. A community installation guide identifies halo3 as the Halo 3 folder and lists a wrong game folder as a possible cause of a manual-install crash. That is a troubleshooting possibility, not a guaranteed explanation for every crash. The guide’s steps are community guidance; the mod creator’s instructions should take precedence.
4. Check whether the mod supports your MCC build
If the mod stopped appearing or began crashing after an MCC update, check the mod’s update notes and compare them with the game version installed on your PC. Updates can require creators to revise mod metadata. In July 2023, Halo Support said creators needed to update a mod’s Max Game Version using Excession for the mod to appear on MCC build 1.3251.0.0. That build number is historical; it is not a statement of the current MCC version. See the July 2023 MCC update notes.

5. Restore or verify MCC files if the game is unstable
If modded files have left MCC unstable, return the base game files to their original state. Halo Support advises restoring original files after mod-related problems and recommends backing up core files before modifying them. For Steam, use the built-in verification procedure:

- Right-click Halo: The Master Chief Collection and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files, then select Verify integrity of game files.
- Let Steam complete the check, then try launching MCC again.
File verification checks the base installation; it does not establish that a particular mod is compatible or correctly installed. Halo Support’s EAC troubleshooting article explains restoring original files, and its mod installation article recommends backing up core files before changes.

6. Narrow down the failure before asking for help
Halo Support says it does not troubleshoot mods and directs mod discussion to the MCC Steam modding forum. When asking the community, include details that help others distinguish a launch-mode problem from a mod, path, or version issue:
- Mod name and its Workshop page, if applicable
- Install route: Steam Workshop, Nexus, or manual file installation
- MCC platform and current game build
- Exact error message, if one appears
- Whether MCC crashes before the mod appears or after it loads
- Whether the problem remains after restoring or verifying the base game files
