This checklist follows Apple’s own support guidance. It applies whenever you decide to buy, and it doesn’t assume any particular launch or model.
1. Confirm you can get into your Apple Account
Setup and restore both require you to sign in. Before you start, make sure you know your Apple Account credentials and can still receive verification codes on a trusted device or phone number. If your phone number has changed, Apple’s guidance is to add the new number as a trusted number. Apple’s pages don’t give a complete account-readiness checklist, so treat this as the minimum. 2. Make a fresh backup and check that it finished
Back up the current device shortly before you switch, not weeks earlier. Apple supports two kinds of backup, and you only need one.
iCloud backup
This needs no computer. It does need enough iCloud storage and a Wi-Fi connection. After it runs, look at the backup’s date and time in your device’s iCloud backup settings to confirm it completed.

Computer backup (Finder, Apple Devices or iTunes)
Which app you use depends on your computer and its software. Apple explains the steps on its Mac backup and restore page. If you want Health and Activity data to move over, make the backup encrypted. Apple’s transfer documentation says an unencrypted backup won’t carry Health and Activity data from an iOS device or Apple Watch. Keep the backup password somewhere safe, because you’ll need it when restoring. Apple’s computer-transfer guide
3. Pick your transfer route in advance

Cables are optional
Wireless Quick Start needs no cable. Apple also offers an optional wired transfer. Which cable that takes depends on the connectors on your two devices, so check both ports before buying anything.

It’s tempting to clear out photos, contacts or documents before the switch. Apple warns against deleting content by hand while you’re signed in to iCloud. Anything synced, including contacts, calendars, reminders, documents and photos, can be removed from iCloud and from your other connected devices. 5. Keep the old device until the new one is verified
Once setup finishes, check the things you can’t easily replace: recent photos, messages, Health history if it matters to you, your key apps and your sign-ins. Only after that should you move on to handing the old device off.

- Finish the transfer and confirm the data arrived.
- If the device is paired with an Apple Watch, unpair the watch.
- Deal with cellular service. Remove or transfer the SIM or eSIM only where it applies to your device and carrier.
- Remove your personal information and erase the device, following Apple’s steps for your exact product.
For trade-in, open Parts and Service History and look for a Finish Repair message. Apple says a repair it indicates should be completed before you trade the device in.
