How to Prepare Videos With Different Aspect Ratios for a YouTube Playlist

YouTube playlists can contain videos with different aspect ratios. Choose a project canvas, fit or crop each clip without stretching, and verify the export.

You do not have to convert every video in a YouTube playlist to 16:9. Prepare each clip so its proportions stay intact, then choose whether to fit the whole image or crop its edges for the project’s frame. YouTube’s player adapts to each video and the viewer’s device; avoid stretching footage or burning in black bars just to make every file look alike.

Do all videos in a YouTube playlist need the same aspect ratio?

No. YouTube says 16:9 is the standard aspect ratio on a computer, but its player changes size to accommodate a video’s aspect ratio and the viewer’s device. A playlist can therefore contain landscape, portrait, square, or other-shaped videos without forcing them all into one frame. The project’s canvas is an editing choice, not a playlist-wide YouTube requirement. YouTube’s player guidance explains the platform’s adaptive sizing.

YouTube may add padding for some video-and-device combinations—for example, vertical 9:16 video in a computer browser. Its guidance says, “For best results, avoid adding padding or black bars directly to your video.” Bars embedded in the file can interfere with the player’s ability to size the video dynamically.

Choose whether to fit or crop each clip

An editing project has a frame ratio, and imported clips may have different ratios. When they do not match, the editor must either show the whole source with unused canvas, crop some of the source, or distort the image. Choose separately for each clip based on what the shot needs.

Treatment What the viewer sees Best when Trade-off
Fit the full image The entire source remains visible; unused canvas may remain around it. The edges contain important people, action, text, or composition. The clip may not fill the project frame. You can use a deliberate designed background, rather than padding the video merely to force a ratio.
Crop to fill The clip fills more or all of the canvas, but image at the edges is removed. A consistent full-frame look matters and the cropped edges contain nothing essential. Faces, graphics, or action near the edges can be cut off.
Stretch The image is enlarged by unequal amounts horizontally and vertically. Not recommended. Subjects look unnaturally wide or narrow. Do not stretch to conceal a ratio mismatch.

Adobe documents working with differently shaped assets in a project, while the DaVinci Resolve 17 Colorist Guide describes a “Scale full frame with crop” input-scaling option. That label is specific to the Resolve 17 guide; check the documentation for your installed version before relying on the same menu name or default.

Prepare a mixed-ratio playlist step by step

  1. Inspect the source clips. Note each file’s frame dimensions and inspect the visible picture. A file can report 16:9 dimensions while containing a narrower image with bars already baked in. Decide whether those bars are part of the intended design or unwanted padding.
  2. Choose the project canvas. Use a 16:9 sequence for a program designed primarily for conventional landscape viewing on computers. For a vertical-first or square-first presentation, choose the intended vertical or square canvas instead. Adobe’s documentation names 9:16, 4:3, 1:1, and 2.40:1 among other frame ratios. The right canvas depends on the program, not on a requirement that all playlist files match.
  3. Set framing clip by clip. Fit a source when preserving its complete composition matters. Crop it to fill when the selected canvas should be full and losing the edges will not remove important content. If you use a background behind a fitted clip, make it a deliberate visual treatment.
  4. Review important details. Check faces, titles, subtitles, and other essential content after reframing. Review every differently shaped clip in sequence; a single automatic scaling choice may not suit every shot. Consider whether abrupt changes between full-frame and fitted treatments look intentional.
  5. Export and inspect the actual file. Confirm that the exported width and height match the selected canvas, and check the pixel aspect setting. Watch for unwanted bars and distortion. Adobe’s export reference describes pixel aspect ratio and scaling options; do not assume a preset preserved the canvas you intended.
  6. Check playback if the result is uncertain. You can upload a representative test and review it in the playback context that matters to you. This is a practical check, not a substitute for verifying the exported file.

Which frame dimensions should you export?

YouTube lists recommended 16:9 export dimensions from 426 × 240 at 240p through 7680 × 4320 at 8K. These are format recommendations, not a rule that every video in a playlist must be 16:9. Pick dimensions that match your chosen canvas and intended output; then verify the exported width, height, and pixel aspect rather than relying on a preset name alone.

Aspect ratio describes the relationship between a frame’s width and height. Pixel aspect ratio describes the shape of the individual pixels used to display that frame. These settings are related but not interchangeable, so check the export’s frame dimensions as well as its pixel aspect setting.

Common problems and fixes

  • The picture looks stretched. A scaling choice may be changing width and height unequally. Restore proportional scaling, then choose fit or crop instead.
  • Important content disappears near the edge. The clip is likely cropped to fill. Reframe it, fit the full image, or adjust the crop so faces, subtitles, and graphics remain visible.
  • Bars appear even though you did not add them in the project. Check whether they are baked into the source image itself. Reframing cannot remove embedded bars without cropping into the visible content.
  • The video has black bars after export. Check both the project treatment and the source for embedded bars. Remove unwanted padding from the file where possible, while preserving the intended composition; do not add bars solely to make YouTube treat the video as 16:9.
  • Different clips feel inconsistent in the playlist. Review them in sequence and decide whether the shifts are appropriate. If a uniform look is important, adopt a consistent crop or designed background where it does not sacrifice essential content.
  • The exported frame is not the canvas you expected. Confirm export width, height, and pixel aspect settings. A preset or scaling option may not match the project’s intended dimensions.
