Prepare a semiconductor sample for photo-induced force microscopy (PiFM) by preserving the surface you want to analyze, ensuring the region is accessible to an atomic force microscopy (AFM) probe, and checking the receiving facility’s size and mounting requirements before shipping. Avoid routine cleaning unless the instrument operator agrees it will not remove or alter the defect, residue, or surface chemistry under investigation.
Start by identifying what the analysis must preserve
Write down what you want PiFM to examine: a process residue, an exposed semiconductor surface, an implanted or annealed region, or a possible contaminant. That distinction determines whether cleaning is appropriate. A cleaning step that removes unwanted dirt could also remove the material you are trying to detect or change the surface chemistry that produces contrast.
The available facility and study guidance does not establish a universal cleaning recipe for semiconductor PiFM samples. Before cleaning, ask the receiving facility what procedure, if any, is suitable for your specific material and target. A 2025 study of contamination fingerprints from laboratory materials used in handling, storage, polishing, and mounting reinforces why preparation materials themselves should be considered: the contamination-control study.
Check whether the region can be measured by AFM
PiFM combines AFM-based topography with photo-induced-force chemical contrast, so the measurement area must be reachable by the AFM probe and the sample must be mountable for the instrument. The ANU Nanophase Facility states, “If AFM measurement cannot be done on the sample, then PiFM measurement cannot be done as well.” Check for features or mounting arrangements that could obstruct probe access, and confirm suitability with the operator before submission.

Confirm dimensions and mounting with the receiving facility
Sample limits differ among providers; do not treat one facility’s specifications as universal. ANU lists samples smaller than 50 mm × 50 mm and thinner than 10 mm. Covalent describes accepting solids ranging from small coupon-mounted pieces through 300 mm wafers. These are provider-specific service envelopes, not interchangeable guarantees. Ask the facility to confirm its current limits and whether your sample needs to be cut, mounted on a coupon, or presented with a particular region exposed.
| Provider example | Published sample envelope | How to use the information |
|---|---|---|
| ANU Nanophase Facility | Smaller than 50 mm × 50 mm and thinner than 10 mm | Confirm current requirements and AFM access with ANU before preparing or sending a specimen. |
| Covalent | Solids from small coupon-mounted pieces through 300 mm wafers | This indicates that service capabilities can differ substantially; it does not establish acceptance by another provider. |
Choose the substrate and mount for the question
For reference samples, ANU lists glass, silicon, mica, and sapphire as examples of substrates that are “not too conductive” for its purposes. That is facility-specific guidance, not a universal substrate rule for semiconductor defect analysis. A device or wafer may need to retain its original substrate or process-representative interface; do not change it merely to match a generic reference-sample example.

Tell the operator what surface and region matter, and ask whether a coupon, a particular exposed area, or a specific mounting method is needed. A mount that secures the sample but covers the region of interest defeats the purpose, while changing the substrate can make the specimen less representative of the device or process being studied.
Handle and package the sample to limit contamination
Packaging is part of preparation because PiFM can be sensitive to molecular layers on a surface. ANU warns that gel-pack containers can outgas and contaminate samples. It recommends Fluoroware or, if that is unavailable, a natural-polypropylene wafer-carrier tray, which it describes as having lower outgassing. For transport that requires adhesive, ANU recommends metal tape with acrylic adhesive. Confirm the acceptable container and adhesive with the receiving facility, especially when trace surface chemistry is the target.

Share the sample’s process history
Include known history that could affect interpretation, such as doping, ion implantation, annealing, deposition, or other treatments. PiFM has been applied to semiconductor-relevant contrasts: a 2024 study examined 4H-SiC substrates with varied doping, Al-ion implantation, porosity, and annealing history. Its specimens included bulk N-doped material, implanted areas, a porous region, and annealed amorphous SiC layers. Those examples show the relevance of the technique to semiconductor materials; they do not establish that every defect class will produce the same contrast or be identifiable under the same conditions.

Good preparation can help preserve the surface chemistry and make the intended region accessible, but it cannot by itself guarantee a particular spatial resolution or chemical identification. Results depend on the instrument setup, surface condition, defect size, and target chemistry. The ST Instruments vendor page frames semiconductor defects and ultrathin residues as an application; its full application note is gated behind a request, so that framing should not be mistaken for independent validation of performance on every sample.
