Passing the AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate exam (SAA-C03) takes more than memorizing service names: you need to choose architectures that meet security, resilience, performance, and cost requirements. AWS publishes a 720 minimum passing score on a 100–1,000 scaled scale, but no course or practice-test score guarantees a pass. This guide turns AWS’s exam outline and preparation recommendations into a practical study workflow without claiming a personal exam result.
What SAA-C03 tests
AWS says SAA-C03 validates the ability to design solutions based on the AWS Well-Architected Framework. The work includes designing for current and projected business needs, creating secure, resilient, high-performing, and cost-optimized architectures, and reviewing existing solutions for improvement. AWS describes the target candidate as having at least one year of hands-on experience designing AWS cloud solutions. Read the official SAA-C03 exam guide first: it defines the scope, but AWS cautions that it is not a comprehensive list of exam content.

Exam format and scoring
The exam includes multiple-choice questions with one correct answer and multiple-response questions with two or more correct answers. AWS’s guide states that 50 questions count toward the score and 15 are unscored; you are not told which questions are unscored. Unanswered questions are marked incorrect, and there is no penalty for guessing. Results are pass or fail, reported on a scaled score from 100 to 1,000, with 720 as the minimum passing score. AWS describes scoring as compensatory: you need to pass overall rather than pass each domain separately. Check the live guide for current exam details when scheduling.
Prioritize study time by domain weight
AWS publishes these weights for scored content. They help you allocate study time, but they do not predict a fixed number of questions on a particular exam form.
#1 Best Overall
| Domain | Share of scored content | Practical study emphasis |
|---|---|---|
| Design Secure Architectures | 30% | Give this the largest share of review time; practice choosing designs that meet security requirements. |
| Design Resilient Architectures | 26% | Work through failure scenarios and identify designs that preserve availability and recoverability. |
| Design High-Performing Architectures | 24% | Compare architecture choices against stated performance needs. |
| Design Cost-Optimized Architectures | 20% | Evaluate cost alongside the workload’s other requirements, rather than treating the cheapest option as automatically correct. |
Use the domain weights as a planning aid, then follow the exam guide’s task statements and service references to determine what to study. The guide explicitly warns that its content list is not exhaustive.
A practical study workflow
This is a suggested workflow, not an official AWS schedule. Adjust the pace to your experience and available study time.

- Map the scope. Read the SAA-C03 exam guide and note the tasks in each domain. Mark each topic as confident, uncertain, or unfamiliar.
- Refresh concepts where needed. Use a course or reading resource to learn unfamiliar material. Choose resources that explicitly align to SAA-C03 and check them against the current exam guide.
- Practice applying decisions. Use exam-style questions to test how you interpret requirements and compare architecture options. After each set, review why the correct response fits and why the alternatives do not.
- Repair specific weak spots. Link missed questions back to the relevant exam-guide task. Revisit the concept, and use a hands-on exercise when you cannot explain how the design works in practice.
- Assess readiness. AWS includes an official practice exam in its preparation approach. Use it as a readiness check, then review mistakes and unresolved topics rather than treating one score as a promise of the live result.
Choose resources by the job they do
AWS’s Certified Solutions Architect – Associate preparation page recommends understanding the exam, refreshing knowledge, practicing across domains, and assessing readiness. It points learners to courses, exam-style questions, Builder Labs, Cloud Quest, AWS Jam, SimuLearn, Escape Room, and an official practice exam. These are different formats for different needs; availability and access requirements can change, so check the current AWS page before relying on a specific resource.
- Reading or a book: Useful if you learn best by following an organized explanation at your own pace. The O’Reilly preview for the AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate (SAA-C03) Cert Guide, 2nd Edition describes companion practice-test software, review exercises, flashcards, and a study planner. Verify that the edition still aligns with the current guide and check availability separately.
- Video courses: Useful for guided explanations and a structured sequence. Check that the course covers SAA-C03 and has been updated against the live exam guide.
- Hands-on exercises: Useful when a service or design choice remains abstract. AWS lists several practice options, including Builder Labs and Cloud Quest; verify current access terms before starting.
- Practice questions and exams: Useful for identifying gaps and learning to distinguish plausible choices. Prefer explanations that address both correct and incorrect options, and use practice results diagnostically rather than as a guarantee.
When deciding whether a resource is worth your time, check its SAA-C03 alignment, learning format, quality of feedback, access terms, and whether it teaches concepts, provides hands-on application, or measures readiness. A learner asking whether there is online reading can begin with AWS’s exam guide and preparation page, then add a book or course if a more guided format is helpful; that question also appears in a public SAA-C03 study-resources discussion.

Use practice questions to learn, not just to score
For each missed or uncertain question, record the requirement you overlooked and the design principle that resolves it. For example, note whether the decision turned on security, resilience, performance, cost, or a trade-off among them. Then review the related exam-guide task and retest the concept with a fresh question or practical exercise. This makes practice useful even when a score is not yet where you want it.
Because AWS says the 15 unscored questions are not identified, treat every question seriously. Since unanswered questions are scored incorrect and there is no guessing penalty, do not leave an item blank when you must submit an answer.
