To prepare a codebase for an AI coding agent, first decide whether it can work from your local checkout or needs an uploaded snapshot. Then give it a focused task brief, the files and project guidance relevant to that task, and clear checks for success. A ZIP makes files easier to transfer; it does not make the contents task-aware. Review the exact files you expose before sharing them.
Choose how the agent will receive the code
| Handoff method | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Local repository access | The agent can work in your checkout and you can configure its permissions. | You avoid making a separate bundle, but what the tool can read depends on its access configuration. OpenAI’s CLI guidance describes working in a local project: Codex CLI documentation. Claude Code documents its own file-access controls in its tool-specific permissions guidance. |
| Selected Git archive | The recipient needs a reproducible snapshot of tracked files at a known revision. | It is tied to a selected revision, but does not select files based on your task and generally excludes untracked local files. Check what is inside. See Git’s git archive manual. |
| Curated context bundle | You can share only selected files, or the repository is broader than the task requires. | A smaller bundle can omit a caller, schema, test, or configuration file the change depends on. Include a map and note gaps. |
| Instruction or planning documents | The work is unfamiliar, cross-cutting, or multi-step. | Concise guidance can explain conventions, architecture, scope, and validation; it adds little if it is stale or duplicates the task brief. OpenAI’s Codex exec plans cookbook shows an AGENTS.md/PLANS.md planning pattern. |
For local access, start the agent in the repository and give it a specific request; OpenAI’s CLI guide even describes beginning with a project-exploration prompt. For an upload or pasted handoff, prepare a snapshot or curated bundle instead. The right choice depends on tool access, privacy, whether untracked files matter, and how reproducible the handoff needs to be.
Write a brief that tells the agent what to do
A code archive without a task leaves the agent to guess what matters. Give it a compact brief containing:
- Outcome: the change or question, stated in observable terms.
- Boundaries: what is in scope and what should not change.
- Likely locations: entry points, related modules, or data flow, if you know them.
- Constraints: conventions or architectural requirements the agent should preserve.
- Completion checks: the commands, tests, or visible behavior that would count as done.
- Data handling: how to treat secrets, private records, or other sensitive material.
For a larger modernization, OpenAI’s cookbook demonstrates a plan with scope, rationale, steps, and completion criteria, supported by documents for system overview, target design, and validation. That is an example for substantial work, not a requirement to create several documents for every small change.

Select files for the task, not for the ZIP
Make the handoff readable and navigable rather than concatenating the entire tree without explanation. Include relevant source and configuration, plus adjacent definitions, callers, schemas, and tests when the change crosses those boundaries. A short directory map can point the agent toward the important areas and explain how the pieces fit together.
Build outputs, dependency caches, generated bundles, and large unrelated assets are often unnecessary if they do not help answer the task. Keep them when the task actually depends on them. There is no established universal include/exclude list or ideal bundle size: the right selection follows from the work, and over-curation can hide a dependency.

- Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
- Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
- Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
- Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C
Create a revision-specific ZIP with Git
When the recipient needs a snapshot of tracked files, Git can archive a selected tree or revision. For example, from the repository root, this creates a ZIP for a named commit:
git archive --format=zip --output=codebase.zip <commit>
Replace <commit> with the revision you intend to send, such as a commit hash or tag. Check the current Git archive options if you need additional path or format controls. The archive reflects tracked tree content at that revision; it may leave out untracked local files that the task needs. Add any necessary local files deliberately, after reviewing them.

- Plug-and-play expandability
- SuperSpeed USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5Gbps)
Inspect the outgoing files for sensitive or irrelevant content
Before uploading or pasting anything, inspect the archive’s file list and remove material the task does not need. Pay particular attention to credentials and private data:
.envfiles and other credentials- Private keys, tokens, and connection strings
- Customer records or other personal information
- Proprietary material outside the task scope
- Unrelated large files that add no useful context
Do not treat Git ignore patterns as a universal privacy control. Git ignore rules concern intentionally untracked files in Git workflows; they do not establish what an AI application can read. Controls are tool-specific: for example, Claude Code’s FAQ documents a Read deny rule for .env* in its permissions guidance. Check the target agent’s current documentation and verify the actual outgoing file set rather than assuming a rule protected it.

- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
Validate the handoff before sending it
- Open the archive or bundle. Confirm it is readable and contains the expected directory structure.
- Check the revision. Make sure the snapshot represents the commit or tag you intended to share.
- Check coverage. Confirm project instructions, likely entry points, related tests or configuration, and the validation details are present.
- State what is omitted. Tell the agent if local-only files, datasets, generated content, or other context is absent, so it does not mistake missing material for nonexistent functionality.
- For larger work, include validation scenarios. Specify the expected outcomes, not only the commands to run. The Codex exec plans cookbook includes a pilot-validation artifact as one example.
What compression can—and cannot—promise
Packaging and context selection solve different problems: an archive transfers a chosen snapshot, while a task brief and curated file set help direct attention to relevant material. Official documentation cited here does not establish a universal compressed size, token target, or measured improvement in success from compressing a codebase. Avoid treating a smaller bundle as automatically better, or a full-repository dump as automatically worse; choose and review the contents against the task.
