For most AM4 gaming upgraders, the Ryzen 7 5700X3D is the better used buy if it costs materially less than a 5800X3D in comparable condition. Tom’s Hardware measured the 5800X3D 9% faster in its 1080p gaming suite, but its launch-era comparison also put the 5800X3D’s price 35% higher. Those are results from one review and its period—not a current price guide or a guaranteed frame-rate gain on your PC.
What is the difference between the 5800X3D and 5700X3D?
Both are eight-core, 16-thread AM4 processors with a 105 W default TDP. The 5800X3D has higher listed base and boost clocks; AMD describes its cache as 96 MB L3, while AMD describes the 5700X3D as having 100 MB total cache. Those cache labels are not identical measurements, so they should not be treated as a like-for-like comparison.

How much faster is the 5800X3D for gaming?
In Tom’s Hardware’s 2024 1080p review suite, the 5800X3D averaged 9% faster gaming performance than the 5700X3D. In the same launch-era comparison, the 5800X3D cost 35% more. Both figures belong to that review’s test system, game selection, and prices; Tom’s notes that the performance difference can vary with the game and GPU. Do not assume a 9% FPS increase on your own setup.
#1 Best Overall
- The world's fastest gaming desktop processor and first gaming processor with 3D stacking technology
- 8 Cores and 16 processing threads with AMD 3D V-Cache technology
- 4.5 GHz Max Boost, 100 MB cache, DDR4-3200 support
- For the advanced Socket AM4 platform, can support PCIe 4.0 on X570 and B550 motherboards

The review is useful for understanding the trade-off, not setting a buying threshold. Your current GPU, games, resolution, and local delivered prices all matter. At higher resolutions or in GPU-limited games, the CPU gap may be less relevant to your experience; the cited review does not establish a universal result for every system. Read Tom’s Hardware’s 5700X3D review and comparison.

| Choose the 5700X3D when… | Choose the 5800X3D when… |
|---|---|
| It is materially cheaper than a comparable 5800X3D listing and value is your priority. | The local premium is small enough that the gaming lead in the cited review is worth paying for. |
| You want a strong gaming upgrade while keeping your AM4 board and DDR4 system. | Your games are CPU-sensitive and your setup is likely to benefit from the additional performance. |
| The specific listing has clearer evidence of condition or better return terms. | The individual chip checks out and the price still makes sense. |
Don’t base the decision on launch prices or old listings. A Tom’s Hardware report published August 11, 2025 described the 5700X3D as largely absent from major US retailers, cited eBay used listings starting at $205 at that time, and said the 5800X3D had been discontinued. Those are dated US-market observations, not current prices or availability. See the August 2025 market report.

Will either CPU work with your AM4 motherboard?
Before paying, check your exact motherboard model and revision on the board maker’s CPU-support page, including the BIOS version required for the processor. AMD lists the 5800X3D for AM4 and supporting chipsets X570, X470, B550, B450, and A520; that does not confirm that a particular board has the needed BIOS installed or that every board revision supports it.

- 5 nm process technology for reliable performance with maximum productivity
- Octa-core (8 Core) processor core allows multitasking with great reliability and fast processing speed
- 8 MB L2 plus 96 MB L3 cache memory provides excellent hit rate in short access time enabling improved system performance
- Identify your motherboard’s exact model and revision.
- Open the manufacturer’s CPU-support list and confirm the exact CPU SKU is supported.
- Check the required BIOS version and whether your current BIOS meets it; if an update is needed, follow the board maker’s instructions before swapping CPUs.
- Confirm your cooler is compatible with the AM4 socket and appropriate for your system.
What should you check before buying a used CPU?
- Match the model name in the listing to the exact SKU printed on the heat spreader.
- Ask for clear photos of the processor’s pins and package, not only stock images.
- Review the seller’s return terms and whether you have a practical way to test the chip promptly.
- After installation, confirm stable boot and operation under load. A successful boot alone does not establish long-term reliability.
These are sensible buyer checks, not a claim that used 5800X3D or 5700X3D processors have a particular failure rate. There is no cited population statistic here that quantifies used-chip failures.
Do you need a new cooler?
AMD says the 5800X3D’s thermal solution is not included and recommends liquid cooling for optimal performance. Check the cooler you already own for AM4 mounting compatibility and suitability rather than assuming a cooler comes with a used CPU. AMD’s 5700X3D announcement specifies its 105 W TDP, but does not provide an equivalent product-page cooler recommendation in the cited material. AMD lists the 5800X3D’s maximum operating temperature (Tjmax) as 90°C.

Bottom line
Start with the 5700X3D if it is substantially cheaper and the listing is trustworthy; it offers a compelling AM4 gaming upgrade without paying as much for the measured lead of the 5800X3D. Choose the 5800X3D when its real local premium is modest, your games and GPU can use the extra performance, and the specific used chip is in good condition. Verify compatibility and seller terms before either purchase.
